I noticed an interesting thread over in [info]deutsche_kultur on the topic of finding good coffee in Germany. Thought you guys might be interested in reading the comments!

dead flowers

Hello everyone,

I'll be moving to Vancouver on New Year's and the only thing that I'm actually worried about is the coffee... mostly whether or not the person I'll be renting a room with has a coffee machine or not, and if the coffee you buy in the store is anything like the sort we have here, but that's hardly any of your concern... I was, however, thinking that if there are any Vancouver people in this community, you might know of some especially nice coffee shop that you'd like to recommend? I love coffee shops and especially if you move to a new place, it's a great way to meet new people and just sort of get a feel for the place... funnily enough, at least in my experience, the atmosphere in a town's various coffee shops rather accurately reflects that of the entire town, or that particular part of town if it's a big one... Anyway, sorry to babble...

I LOVE adding ground cinnamon to coffee, especially mochas, but I only do it when I order the coffee, not when I brew it at home.

I've been wanting to try using stick cinnamon as a stirrer at home, but I don't want to buy a bunch of sticks only to find out it doesn't taste good. Has anyone ever tried this before who could let me know how it tastes in comparison to the ground cinnamon?

season
My husband and I just got back from a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada. While there, I discovered that their Starbucks (Starbuckses?) were serving something I'd never seen before for the Autumn season - Maple Macchiato. It was really yummy! Does anyone know if this is strictly a Canadian thing, or is it also being done anywhere in the U.S.? (Not like I can get any, since I live in Virginia and I definitely haven't seen it around here, but I was just wondering.)

Edit: Well, it appears by the comments that they are in fact popping up here in the U.S. I'll have to check my local stores again and see if they have it. I do remember the barista in Canada saying that they've had them up there every Autumn for a while, though.
SG1 Daniel and his Coffee
Okay, it's challenge time! I want to see ALL the nicknames you've ever heard for Coffee. You know - Cuppa Joe, Java, Mud, etc. If you happen to know the origin of a nickname, all the better!

I was recently asked in email if I had a list like this at cocoajava.com and I realized I didn't. I know it sounds silly, but this sorta thing is quite handy for writers, poets, trivia nuts and who knows who else. So, now of course I want to build a list for my site.

If you are from outside the United States and reply with some nicknames, could you let me know if they are local to your country, and where you are? That might be helpful to people using the list, too!

Okay. I expect to see a hundred replies to this when I check tomorrow night! *crosses fingers*

I'm collecting opinions on the storage of coffee. I usually keep whole bean coffee in the fridge in an air-tight container, but I've heard people say not to keep it in the fridge. Is there really a right and wrong way to store coffee?
7th-May-2006 08:47 pm - Vacuum coffee brewing question
fara
Hi everyone:

I'm not sure this is the right place for this question, but I have a steel vacuum coffee system (that you make on the stove) and it's not working right. It has no electric parts, so I'm not sure what's wrong. But the coffee is supposed to boil in the vacuum cone and not go into the bottom pot until I take it off the heat, but the coffee boils a little bit, and then goes down into the bottom pot by itself, even if the stove is still on. The result is very weak coffee. Any advice?

The system is a steel pot, a steel cone, a rubber gasket that seals the cone to the pot, and a spring/filter thing.

Thanks!

Jett!
I found what I believe is a stove top espresso maker in storage. It looks cool - anyone have a clue how to use it?

It says  Caffee Espresso  by Benjamin & Medwin

Yesterday I was at Wegmans and ordered 6 Godiva truffles of various kinds. When I got them, the total was about $9.00 (US) and my boyfriend made an incredulous exclamation that they couldn't be worth that much money. When we got home I let him try the milk chocolate espresso truffle and he is now a convert to the goodness that is Godiva chocolate and admitted they were worth the cost. Score for chocoholic me! Even if he still says I'm a chocolate snob because I won't eat Hershey's chocolate.
Also, does anyone here have a Senseo machine? I read some really bad reviews of it, and I don't know if I should get one.
