Hey all--I'm a novelist and the protagonist in my latest story is a coffee fiend--but I don't know anything about coffee! I'm wondering if y'all would be willing to give me some pointers and suggestions when I have a coffee-related question? For example, I'm wondering if there's a particular type of coffee that goes best with chocolate, either "on the side" (like, what you'd drink when you're eating chocolate) or mixed together (like a mocha). That's the first question I have, but I'm sure I'll have plenty more....

Times are tough but innovation by one entrepreneur helped him find a niche for his new business. Taking the Bikini Barista concept to the next logical step, he's putting smiles on a lot of people's faces with his controversial business model.

Last Monday (Feb 23, 2009), Donald Crabtree opened Grand View Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, Maine (population 4,500), where five waiters and ten waitresses serve their customers topless. Many of these were people who had recently lost their jobs and were glad to have been hired from the more than 150 applicants.

So far the place is hugely popular and business is booming. Employees are doing well too - one waitress received a $100 tip for a cup of coffee, and most of the wait staff average $30 a table. And despite what you might expect, the customers tend to be couples and women.

Sadly, I have been sick all weekend and with all my senses diminished, I couldn't have appreciated the Michigan State University Museum's annual Chocolate Party Benefit! One of these years, I AM going to make it there, I swear! I hear all sorts of good things about this event, and it grows bigger every year!

I baked some Original No Pudge brownies today. I didn't have any chocolate chips to put in the mix & I ate the Dark Chocolate M & M's I had yesterday. Coffee Could Fuel You and Your Car

Jan. 20, 2008 -- Coffee can do more than just fuel you through an afternoon slump. It might also power your car.

That's the idea behind a new study that turned used coffee grounds into biodiesel fuel. Coffee will probably never replace petroleum, but discarded cappuccino scraps might someday help reduce our impact on the environment, say the study's authors. They imagine a day when the byproducts of your latte end up in the gas tank of your car -- with hardly any waste left behind.

"It's a very simple two-step process," said Susanta Mohapatra, a chemical engineer at the University of Nevada, Reno. "We can definitely make a big impact on our environment with fuel made out of nature."

Scientists have known for decades that coffee beans contain oil. Mohapatra and colleagues, however, were the first to analyze coffee grounds.

Used grounds usually end up in landfills, though gardeners sometimes use them as compost material. The scientists collected used grounds from Starbucks, which gives bags of grounds away as part of the company's "Grounds for your Garden" program.

To prepare the grounds for analysis, the team first dried them in an oven. They mixed the resulting powder with a combination of solvents that caused the oil to separate from the solution. They extracted the oil, saving the solvents for the next round of processing. The remains could still be used as compost, ethanol feedstock, and fuel pellets.

"We're not wasting anything," Mohaptra told Discovery News. "It's a recycling process."

The study showed that used grounds contain about 15 percent oil by weight, depending on the type of coffee. That's not too far off the proportions in soybean, rapeseed, and palm oils, which are also used as sources for biodiesel. And coffee oil is more stable than these other sources because of its high antioxidant content, found the study, which appeared in December in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Around the world, growers produce more than 16 billion pounds of coffee each year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The scientists estimate that spent grounds could add 340 million gallons of biodiesel to the global fuel supply.

Mohapatra envisions a streamlined coffee recycling system, in which the same trucks that deliver beans to Starbucks could pick up the brewed waste and head to a biodiesel plant. The plant would be close by, to save on transportation costs and emissions.

Coffee grounds appear to produce high-quality oil, granted Robert McCormick, an engineer at The National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. But, he said, coffee probably won't be a practical solution to the world's energy needs.

For one thing, the country's main sources of biodiesel -- cooking oil and animal fat -- are 100 percent oil, compared to coffee's 15 percent. And even when a cafe brews a large amount of coffee, relatively few grounds are left behind. It takes 50 gallons of spent grounds to produce just 1 gallon of oil, Mohapatra said.

Still, McCormick commends the researchers for thinking outside the box about the world's energy issues.

"Anything that takes a waste product and makes a fuel out of it is really a positive," he said. "This is pretty cool."

I was just in Wal-Mart today, and in the candy aisle they have Starbucks chocolate in with the holiday stuff. They make a truffle version of the famous Egg-Nog Latte. They make one for the Gingerbread Latte too, but I wanted to try the Egg Nog first.

It's described on the package as follows:

Rich milk chocolate wraps a creamy center of slightly spicy eggnog flavor and espresso.

It's delicious!

For my birthday, my boyfriend and I went to a restaurant that specializes in chocolate! (Beware, the photographs are from a cell phone and of poor quality.)

I thought I should share with you guys.

On the way home, the city was full of light. Woowee.

And it was quite rainy.

We went to this restaurant. Their main aim is to make chocolate exciting again by using it as an ingredient rather than a confection. They utilize chocolate as an ingredient in bizarre and innovative ways.

Also? The restaurant was gorgeous. Very dark (lighting and colors) and the music was sedate but hip. It reminded me of the kind of place that the women on The L Word would patronize. Our server was a beautiful French man who was very excited about chocolate. With each course, he gave us a little history of the dishes and explained what was inside them. It was kind of cute.

We started with an Italian Cheese Plate. This is how the website describes it: "ITALIAN CHEESE COURSE - parmigiano reggiano three ways / fig & pesto toast". I had a glass of a Spanish Syrah and Kevin had a Belgian cherry-flavored wheat ale.

The parmigiano reggiano three ways (a foamy cheese drink, a dried cheese 'wafer', and a couple hunks of fresh cheese. That strip of dark brown that stretches across the plate is a blend of dark chocolate and balsamic vinegar.

Next, we launched into some 'coco bites'. Kevin had another of the same ale and I tried a 'cocojito'...a mohito made with chocolate vodka. It was INCREDIBLE.

This is the goat cheese and beet salad. The website describes it: "GOAT CHEESE & BEETS
yellow & red beets / greens / maracaibo nibs / raspberry vinaigrette". It was like a little tart with greens on top. Soooo good.

I also had a swordfish slider. Yum! Website description: "MOROCCAN SWORDFISH SLIDER
fennel salad / aged pecorino / hazelnut coffee dressing". It was a little salty, but had incredible flavor.

Kevin with his coco bites. (I'm telling you, this place was dark!) He had a bacon macaroni and cheese (BACON orechiette / four cheeses / crispy bacon) and a beef slider (BLUE CHEESE BEEF SLIDER co co. mole sauce / sautéed spinach / wild mushrooms).

I look like an idiot in this picture. Please excuse the expression on my face. I was over excited and had had a couple drinks.

Kevin's first chocolate course: "AMUSE mini boston cream doughnut / cappuccino panna cotta".

My first chocolate course: "AMUSE churros / cinnamon cream / dulce de leche dip".

When the cute French waiter brought out my second chocolate course, it had a lit birthday candle in it! Kevin must have told him that it was my birthday while I was in the bathroom. It was very sweet.

The full on look at the second chocolate course: "MAIN DESSERT hot chocolate soufflé with fiery chocolate center / kahlua soother". The hot chocolate soufflé has the candle, then there is a kahlua/coffee scoop of ice cream, then a spicy chocolate truffle of some sort, and then the kahlua drink. I'm not sure why those aren't all mentioned in the description. Ah well.

Kevin's second chocolate course: "MAIN DESSERT milk chocolate, pb & banana foster split / mini co co. cupcake / malted shooter".

Hmm...it appears that I did not take pictures of the last course. Weird. Here are the descriptions at any rate:

Mine: "PETIT FOURS chocolate infused horchata / mexican wedding cookie"

Kevin's: "PETIT FOURS mint chocolate chip cone / strawberry cheese cake lolly with pop rocks"

We each had another drink (a glass of syrah for me and another beer for him) and then split the tab. I paid for the drinks, he paid for the food.

It was wet and yucky when we left. After about half an hour, we both felt a little sick from so much chocolate, but it was delicious.
