The bear was similar to the whistle, insomuch that Morgan had a messed up sense of humor. At least Morgan hadn’t given him a nightlight, which he had been partly expecting after what he had said about being afraid of the dark. But that had been a couple weeks ago and Reid had assumed that it had been forgotten about. Had Morgan bought him a nightlight, he probably would’ve thrown it back and stormed off but he’d taken the stuffed bear with a smile. Later that evening he’d dropped the bear on his kitchen table without so much as a second thought.

All he wanted to do was sleep.

And it took him about five minutes of lying in bed to conclude that it wasn’t going to happen.

He has read everything about it; scotophobia, fear of darkness. Problem is he’s not really afraid of the dark. Not anymore at least. When he was very young his father would check under his bed for him, never his mother, because she would have been disappointed had she ever bothered to notice. He knew there was nothing there, no monsters under his bed or any where else, nothing that could hurt him while he slept but no matter how many times he told himself, it didn’t make any difference. Imagined dangers were just a haunting as real ones. As an adult, he realizes monsters do exist, just not the type he imagined under his bed.

His comeback when the subject had come up with Morgan and JJ was it wasn’t the fear of darkness so much as the fear of absence of light. Sometimes it’s called nyctophobia, fear of the night; and he thinks that’s more appropriate since he there’s light slipping through the curtains and he still can’t sleep. He goes to closet and extracts one of the many boxes of books; he’s long run out of shelf space. All he can do is look at the titles and trace his fingers idly along the spines, nothing interests him.

Freud considered the fear of the dark as a manifestation of separation anxiety; and maybe there was a little bit of that when we was young too. He knows that it’s more common in adults than it is in children. He hated to disturb his mother just because he couldn’t sleep. She would always glace over her book at him with just a little disappointment before resigning to let him lie on the bed. He would always love her for that.

He drags his feet into the kitchen, where he picks up the large bear. It wasn’t cheap; he can tell from the tag that it was custom made and he wonders why Morgan would order this bear especially for him. It’s golden white with splotches of dark brown, including one on its head that looks like hair. Its eyes are the same colour. The embroidery on the bottom of the right foot reads “Light” and he runs the pad of his thumb over it. He sits at the table for awhile with the bear sitting in front if him. His mind jumps around from phobias to separation anxiety to Elle to murdered kids in Ozona, Texas but eventually returns to his apartment. He doesn’t bother to look at the clock.

Something he doesn’t know is why he takes the bear back to bed with him. He holds it and tries to remember what it’s like to be held. To be pressed against or press against someone else so tightly that he couldn’t breathe. The bear smells soft, like cologne and fabric softener.

It’s not until the next day he wonders why Morgan bought him a bear that looks like Hotch.
