I am really puzzled. Last night when we covered Fiona up for bed she was perfectly fine. This morning when I went to give her fresh food and water I noticed that her left eye is closed. It's just closed. No outward signs of irritation (i.e.- it's not red, not swollen, etc) and she doesn't seem to be in any pain. She was functioning pretty normally aside from being a bit skittish when I approached on her "blind" side. She attacked her Avi-Cake and her poop is fine. She doesn't seem to be in any pain. Should I be worried? What could be causing this? Sometimes she gets feathers near/on her eyes but she seems totally unaffected by that, normally. Our 'keet likes to preen her head so he may have injured her, but they are in seperate cages so if that's the case the eye should have been closed last night while they were out playing.

Advice, anecdotes, and encouragement would be welcome!

ETA- I just called her vet and she said that it's most likely and irritation or eye infection of some kind. Since the other eye is fine and her nose isn't crusty she doesn't think it sounds indicative of some sort of bigger illness. She told me that if the eye is still shut when I get home from work I should probably take her to an emergency room to make sure it's not a tear, but if the eye if open she's most likely fine.

When`s the last time you introduced a new bird to the household?
One of my friends was having trouble with what seemed to be an `eye infection` in one of her birds. It turned out to be a symptom of psittacosis.

Whatever it is, a vet visit would probably be a good idea.

We haven't ever introduced a new bird to the house. We've had our 'keet over a year and we got her last April, so she's never been around any strange birds.

This is probably not helpful, but as a child I used to often wake up with one eye stuck closed. It just sort of wept goopy stuff in the night. My grandmother would wipe it off with a very mild antiseptic and I'd be good as new. But yes, if it doesn't clear up on its own very soon, seeing the vet is probably the way to go.

Thanks. I had the same thing myself as a kid and I thought the same thing might be happening with her. I guess I'll have to see how she is when I get home.

One of my birds had a closed eye one night, we took him to the vets the next day, he gave him some drops which were murder to get in even though he's a lovely bird who loves to be handled! The bird had a cateract since he was like 20 years old, the vet thought it may have been a complication from that but otherwise had no actual explanation as to why the birds eye was like that. In the end he just said 'oh he must have knocked it' The eye was fine though within a day or two of the drops :-)
