I found out today we are getting a second teil via a neighbor. I know I need to keep them in seperate cages for a while., but Im curious beyond that what needs to be done...

Preferably, keep them in different rooms, and definately clean your hands after handling the new bird or cleaning its cage. It`s also very important to take the new bird in for a vet visit.

Once you`re sure the new bird is healthy, you can put the two cages within sight of each other, slowly moving the cage`s closer together. Don`t let the cages touch, though, or one of them could try biting the other`s toes.

If things are going well and they`re interested in each other, try introducing them to each other in a `neutral` place. A part of the house neither bird claims as their own territory (bathrooms often work well). Just lay down a bunch of toys, two food dishes, two water dishes... and watch to make sure they get along well. If things are going really well, you can try housing them together eventually. Just make sure to rearrange the cage completely before putting the birds in together, and do it when you have time to sit around and watch them to make sure they get along together when in a cage together.

All sorts of good info in ltdead's post! Quarantine and a Vet Check are very important. Even if they get along right off the bat, it is good to keep them separate so that they do not have access to each other's water, food, poop, or anything else that could contain germs and things from the other bird.

It wouldn't hurt to make them a few new toys, too! They don't even have to be anything all that classy, just something that the current 'tiel won't be so possessive over. Then when time has passed, you can put the older toys back in ^^

If your tiel is a bit submissive in nature or is over-all social, there probably won't be too many problems. Gen fell in love with Belina the second he saw her. After 24 hours, she wore the pants in that relationship XD
