Paper addict...any advice?
I have two tiels, one likes to stay in the cage and one loves staying out. The tiel who stays out usually spends hours upon hours throwing papers/envelopes/napkins on the ground and then throwing them in the air and carrying them around the room. He seems to get a lot of pleasure out of doing this & when its time for him to go back into his cage, he gets very angry and jumps from perch to perch & sometimes chaces my other tiel around. He doesn't do this when I leave the room/when he is tired & I believe he does this because he thinks if he causes trouble I'll have to let him out & then he'll get to play with his paper.

Does anyone's tiel(s) love to play with paper, and does anyone have any tips for how I can show him that maybe there is more than paper and to calm down when he's not with the paper? He really does live for those hours when he can walk around and just throw paper up and down. Any advice is much appreciated :)

Employ him as a paper shredder!!! That's how Doodle put himself through college.

He may just like playing with stuff he can make into nesting material. My beebs like to make lil' secret clubs everywhere-- under stairs, on bookshelves, in vera bradley knock off diaper bags. It's sweet. ^_^ Try playing fetch with him-- he will drop it and you pick it up for him.

I have noticed he tends to bring them to corners, but he just piles them on top of eachother. & he tends to play with paper that is larger rather than small pieces, do tiels usually nest with small paper or just paper in general? & thanks for the comment :)

I often make paper chains to hang inside the cage for them to shred. They also like cardboard tubes. Maybe just give him something inside that's just as fun?

How do you glue the ends of the chains together, safely? Most glues are probably toxic. So put a lot of research into finding a safe glue!
You could use the old, Japanese method very safely. A crushed piece of cooked rice is very sticky. It wouldn`t hold the rings as well as glue, but at least you`d know it was 100% safe.

I don't glue them. I just tear long strips and fold it at a 90 degree angle in the middle, and keep folding over to make chains. =)

At first I thought placing something inside the cage would never work because he's selfish when it comes to his toys, but it did so thank you! He doesn't scream to come out anymore and is happy to go back in :)

How about giving him paper to play with in his cage as well?

If they fight you might want to get them separate cages. You can also buy paper toys at busy beaks here are some cool ones:
bagels
machine paper
tissue tease
and also most birds will pace back and forth on the bottom of the cage if you're in the same room.. because they want out! If a bird enjoys being out of their cage they usually want to be out most of the time, and they like to beg. You might just want to practice having him out whenever you're home, as long as he will be supervised.

Those are great, thanks! I think I'm going to make the machine paper myself and order the bagels.
