My cockatiel has diarrhea
Hi!

I've just recently joined this lovely community on behalf of my two lovely 'tiels Bud and Birdie (both girls).

I think something may be wrong with Bud. She's been having diarrhea for almost a month now. She's still been eating normally, but she's been drinking a lot. She still sits in her usual perch spot, she still preens, and she seems to be fine otherwise. She's been sleeping on two feet lately, and that's got me a bit worried. I've given her spray millet, boiled rice, cockatiel gravel, and I've tried giving her a few drop of pepto bismol, but she still has the diarrhea. I want to take her to the vet, but my parents insist she's fine. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with Bud? Should I get her to the vet right away despite what my parents say?

I'm so worried for her:(

Hi there! Welcome to the community!

I was worried that my Belina had something wrong with her, for she suffered a similar symptom. She acts normal and seems healthy, but she's always had some bowel problems. Diarrhea has been a constant these past few months, and lately her poops have looked a little too red for comfort. She struggles to drop them at times, which has had me worried.

However, after a vet visit and a few tests, they said she was fine. I think that vet visits are important...even though all of her tests turned up negative, I've been much more relaxed about her BM troubles. Perhaps it's just who she is - she still eats, preens, plays and harasses her mate Gen. She doesn't seem to mind the diarrhea/constipation, and now that I know it's nothing fatal, I don't mind either. I would take Bud to the vets...you never know what could be going on in her system, hopefully it's nothing dangerous!

Poor Belina!

**gives Belina a headscratch**

Bud never had this sort of problem before. I think I'll talk to my mum tomorrow and make her take Bud to the vet as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for your reply:)

I'd ditch the grit (cockatiel gravel) as hookbilled parrots don't need it to digest, only birds like pigeons and doves do. And a vet visit certainly doesn't hurt, I'd take her despite what your parents say.

Looking at poops is one of the few ways to detect an illness before it becomes really serious. Birds are EXCELLENT at hiding illness.

By diarrhea do you mean that the poop part doesn`t maintain its coiled shape, and is very mushy? Or do you mean that the watery part of her poop is larger then the other bird`s? Drinking a lot and having a large watery-part in a poop can be a sign of diabetes, I know. I`m pretty sure it`s a symptom for other problems as well. Actual diarrhea (mushy poop that doesn`t hold the coiled shape) can be a symptom for a wide variety of diseases and infections.

I would recommend a trip to an AVIAN vet for a few tests like a gram stain. Birds should be taken in for annual wellness checks (just like we should visit the dentist and the doctor regularly to make sure nothing`s wrong). Be sure it`s an avian vet, a cat-and-dog vet can be worse then worthless. You can check www.aav.org for a vet in your area. You can also call local bird rescues/clubs/stores and see who they recommend, as well as do a google search for something like `certified avian vet (your state).`

It could just be nervousness. If the rents won't let you take them, check the poop and see if there's a coiled shape inside. That's not considered diarrea. If it's all mushy consider going to a bird clinic. There's one held in my area every month or so and an avian vet comes and looks at sick birds for free. I'd ask around and see if there's something similar where you live ;) Get well soon Bud, *pats her head*

Doodle has regular poop with tons of water in it and it's just because he drinks like a little tiny camel. When he holds it for a while everything comes out like normal.

Hmm. Well, I think, from reading all the responses (which I thank you all sooooo much for doing! *glomps*), that Bud only had 'real'diarhea once (where it was all unformed and mushy), but her poos are rather watery, green, and are loosely coiled-squiggled. So if her poo is like that, does that mean she's ok?

I haven't had a chance to talk to my mum about it today (my dad is the one who's really stubborn) cos of school and karate (hiya!), but I'll definitely talk to my mum about a vet visit tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your support, it truly means a lot:)
