Going into heat
I'm not sure what to do about this - lately, it's seemed like Eriza's been going into heat a lot. I've tried the advice I've seen given to other people - moved the cage, rearranged things, and she always gets at least 12 hours of darkness. I'm not sure what to do - is this something I should see a vet about (nearest avian vet is 2 hours down a mountain, not something I can do easily) or do different birds go into that stage more than others? Any help's appreciated.

Are you petting her tummy or butt? Just checking. ^^

Does she do it because she's bored or do you pay attention to her when she does it? She might think she invented an awesome game that gets your attention. :q Definitely continue with the 12+ of darkness and little stressors. Something else that may cause mating behavior is the presence of nesting material and mirrors. If she has a little dark corner of her cage she may want to nest there, or a cozy little platform. Maybe a more spartan cage will settle her down long enough?

Nooope - neck and head scratching is about all she's got the patience for. I don't think there's much in her cage that would prompt it, no platforms or nesting material or whatnot.

In what way is she acting like she`s `in heat,` and how is it a problem? Worried about eggs?
You can up the hours of darkness to as much as 14 hours a night and see if that helps.

Doing the whole constant rubbing against things bit, making the noises that she only ever makes in that state - I was under the impression that being in that state too much wasn't necessarily a good thing for her.

Aw! She's a horny bird! I assume she's nesting then, huddling into little corners and pecking about. Try to discourage that as well. Perhaps a T-stand will help. You can try to train her to stay there when she is displaying breeding behavior. How old is she also, that can play a part in it too. If she's just sexually developed, it can be more intense than later in their life.

Yep - she's rubbing herself up against the side/corner of her cage, propositioning her dangly toys and generally just..well, acting horny *laughs* She's a couple months over a year old at this point. She's okay so long as I have her out of the cage, but as soon as I put her back in for any reason, she goes at it again. I've kept her in/out schedule the same since September so I don't necessarily know if it's her going "Oooh, Ma will let me out if I get all horny!"
