Tele' says Squawk!
Hello all, I've posted a few times, but figured that I'd introduce Tele'. (pronounced Telly)

That's her stealing a Christmas cookie
She is 13 months old. I got her in June and we lived with my boyfriend & best friend and people we constantly in and out of our house. In October, Tele' and I had to move to a new city where we no no one and she seems to be a bit sad now. She really can't stand when no one is around. In the old situation, a little NPR would tie her over, but I think that she's lonely now while I'm gone most of the time a work/the gym/volunteering. I've been tossing around the idea of getting her a companion, but can't decide if it's really a good idea or not. She was also really mean last week. When we came back from holiday with the family, after I had left her alone Monday she suddenly turned mean, and would just bite at me and fly back to her cage if I picked her up. Since returning home from the New Years weekend, she's back to nice Tele'.

Tele' loves millet and tofu but doesn't really like greens. This has been a bit of a problem lately b/c I've been an over concerned mommy and she's vegan, so can't have cuttlefish, so her not eating much kale isn't sitting well with me.
She can't talk, but squawks loudly and will squawk back and forth with me. She does long, muttled squawks early in the morning, so maybe she'll speak soon. She likes to climb down her ladder, across my room to my bike and climb up to the top of the front tire to sleep there. She also has a brick outside of her cage that she likes to sleep on. She doesn't have much interest in typical 'birdy' things, like toys or mirrors, but really likes it when I sew. She'll pick at the threads from the floor for a while then climb up my leg into the top of the machine. But her favorite thing to do it pick all the pins out of the pin cushion and scatter them all over the floor.

That's about all I have to say about Tele'. I had made some pictures of her for my bf which

Maybe she would prefer some sort of mineral block?
You can also try sprinkling crushed eggshells over foods she`ll eat. (From hardboiled eggs, not raw eggs. Or you can bake the shells.)

Yeah, she has a mineral block that she occassionally picks at, but I don't do eggs either. Thanks though!

so are you a vegan and therefore your bird is?

i hope you're able to find enough things to be able to supply her with adequate nutrition.

g'luck

What I meant to say before my computer went funny is: are parrots naturally vegans in the wild? I'm just curious.

no, parrots are not vegans. Cockatiels in particular are mostly vegetarian and oportunistic feeders - they mostly feed on grass seeds, but will snap up an occasional insect, meat or egg if they can get it. However, they can do ok on vegan (unlike cats, dogs and other predatory pets).

you should really look into converting her to a good quality pellet (Harrisons is what I use, from what I can see it doesn't have any animal products in it) as a base food, because then it would not be such a huge concern wether she eats enough veggies, as the pellets should provide the minimum required vitamins.

Also, keep trying with the greens and veggies - try presenting htem in different ways. If she plays with toys, hanging pieces of veggies and greens from her cage bars to make them look like a toy might be a good idea.

You also might want to include peas and beans in her diet (especially if not feeding pellets) to provide a little extra protein.

Don't get discouraged about cuttlefish - the calcium it provides is not easily absorbed by birds, so she will not be missing oput on much nutritionally in that area. Also, make sure that (once she eats greens) you don't feed too much dark green leafy things like spinach, as they contain substances that can reduce calcium absorbtion in birds.
