My birdy
This is my bird, Tuki:

You can also visit his journal if you want (lame, I know) at [info]tukellikus

Anyways, he does something strange that my other cockatiel doesn't do. He will randomly just start banging his beak against anything he can find. He'll sit there and slam his beak repeatedly into a wall, cage, desk, etc., occasionally lifting up his head to yell, "TUKI!" Was wondering if any of you had any 'tiels that loved to bang their beaks. Also, my other 'tiel, Joey, is wild and very mean to people (there's nothing we can seem to do to make him like anyone), and when we first got him he would imitate finches and others birds from the pet store, never sounding like a cockatiel. Eventually though he started to copy Tuki, and now he acts like him all the time, making the same noises and body gestures. He also says, "Hi, Tuki" all the time now (what Tuki says). I just think it's adorable that he copies him :)

Spike loves tapping his beak on anything and everything. He especially likes it when I tap back. A lot of parrots will initiate this "game," though it's funny to watch him try and tap on things that don't make noise, like my shoulder.

My Hermyboy is the same way!!
I read somewhere that they do that in the wild and the alpha male usually initiates and they all tap back. I'm not sure if it's a game for the wild birds but it is for my boy.
He LOVES to tap on ANYTHING, including pillows where I can't hear him.
So cute<333

heh I've seen buzz look around for something to tap, find nothing appropriate, then lift up his foot and use that.

My 'tiel does the same thing, not sure if male or female, supposing maybe a male then hehe. =) Reminds me of a woodpecker sometime.

That's not lame. *wg* He should go visit [info]chicken_doodle's journal (not my bird, btw lol). It's hilarious!

I thought about setting one up for my Bella, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Your Tuki is quite handsome, btw. My girls are impressed. ^_^

Ooooh! I want to start a journal for Elvis! Tuki looks a lot like Elvis. He bangs his beak on stuff too. It always cracks me up. He usually does it on my shoulder or whatever he's perching on. It's totally normal I'm sure.

Birds, especially parrots, like to test things with their beak. It's kind of a third appendage, so it's not surprising that they use it to try materials and things out! So long as he isn't hurting himself, I see no problem with it ^^

I'm going to have to add all of these 'tiels to my buddylist, or to Gen's list once he gets a journal ;)

My bird loves to bang his beak too; his favorite spots are my shoulder, the mirror, and my keyboards. Then he'll start making kissing chirps and starts whistling.

like sammygirl said up there, it's something the alpha male does and all the other males do, it's sort of a round thing, I don't know what it's purpose is though (i can't remember if it wasn't listed on the place i read it or if they didn't know either).

Both our males do it though, pie mei our youngest male taps on everything, including the ridge of our nose and on our foreheads, he's a lil bit of a nut though
