Lately, Syuri has been drinking huge gulps of water and for a few minutes afterwards, she will occasionally sneeze. The sneezes are very wet and nasally sounding as if she got water in her nose - eventually the noise goes away and the moisture in her sneezes stops.

Has anyone else had this problem, or knows of ways to prevent this? I don't know if she's actually hurting herself or just being a goofball and drinking too fast? I'm such a worried bird-parent.

Happens to Bella all the time. I'm fairly certain that she just got some water in her nares. No big deal... at least that's what I've been told. ^_^

Heh. The worst is when they sneeze right in your face. More than once I've picked Bella up after she's taken a drink and she sneezed in my face. I had to clean my damn glasses off. XD

is she a baby cockatiel? my tiels did this when they were young like under 5 months...i guess they didn't quite get the concept that if they dunk their beak in for a huge gulp they're gonna choke/sneeze

Nooo... she's about a year and a half. I don't think she has grasped that concept anyway!

Mine does that every so often. Usually if I've had him for awhile and return him to the cage and he's really thirsty.

It could possibly be prevented with a water bottle, though I still have a dish for my birds because they like to bathe in it.

I used to be *so* paranoid about sneezes, head scratches, yawns..anything that could possibly mean illness in birds. I've learned that, like people, our birds are subject to runny noses and dry skin and all of that irritating stuff. Genny has little sneezing fits every once in a while - Every once in a while he'll let out a huge sneeze, hitting me when I'm sitting a couple of feet away!

So long as it isn't unusually regular, I don't think there is anything to worry about. Maybe she swallows her water too fast ;)

my bird has done that several times..but he'll rarely drink water in front of me unless i've just changed it so he can show me that he does..in fact, actually drink the water, rather than bathe in it only. So i really can't say if he does it anymore

I love that icon--it looks like Lorne is drinking a Cosmopolitan. Yummy. *g* (I've seen Angel just enough to recognize Lorne and like him.)
