FAQ:

1. What is this community all about?
This is a separate group of people from [info]coachella that have agreed to participate in making and exchanging a mixed CD of Coachella artists. Last year a few of us did this and it generally worked well. The idea is to introduce some of the weekend's talent to other people as well as celebrating your favorite performers.

2. What are the rules?
If you are in the community, then you have agreed to make a mix and send it out to everyone else in the community. Everyone else will send you a mix.

3. What are the rules about making the CD?
Basically the only rule is to use current Coachella bands off the official lineup.

3.5. So, how are we going to "exchange" these CDs?
Mail. As for addresses, we will come up with some way to make sure that everybody has one another's address. Last year everybody e-mailed me their username and mailing address. I gathered all of these into one e-mail and sent it out to everybody in the mix group.

4. I want to make a really kick ass CD that everybody will enjoy. How should I do that?
Use as much of the CD as possible. Choose a wide variety of bands and genres. Give us some stuff we don't know: rare mixes, b-sides, live bootlegs, etc. while keeping it listenable.

5. I want to make a really shitty CD that everybody will use as a drink coaster. How should I do that?
Include a lot of the songs that everybody already knows because they are being promoted on sampler/promo CDs, websites, etc. Instead of using personal favorites, use the singles we've all heard on the radio. Stay to one limited genre or year.* Better yet, stick with just a few bands. And leave a lot of blank space at the end of the CD too.

* Actually, if you really only like electronica or punk or hip hop you shouldn't be expected to burn a CD with music you would not normally listen to. monitor_spotter made an excellent CD with just electronica groups that just may have converted almost anyone over to the world of drum machines, keyboards and computers.

6. So, can I use MP3s?
Sure--BUT THE CD HAS TO BE AN AUDIO CD, NOT A CD OF MP3s. Making mixes is all about taking from your own collection but if your collection has been turned into computer files, or has always been computer files, then use 'em.

7. I'm not into this digital thing--can I make a tape?
Um, sure. A few of us may not be able to play it.

8. What about the cover, liner notes, case, etc.?
The minimum is to allow a listener some way to know what they are hearing. You might want to put your LJ username on it too. Otherwise, knock yourself out. Last year some people went for the basic look while others made truly great CD covers and the like. Somebody even created special mailing labels!

9. How about DJs?
That can be tricky. Imagine that Paul van Dyk is spinning this year. Obviously you can use songs he has produced--easy enough. But what about songs he has mixed? Judge for yourself. If it is a song, by a 2005 artist, then that is cool. An artist from another Coachella year is OK--better if it was a headliner than a lesser known.

10. When is this thing due?
This is to be decided by the members. Ideally all the mixes can be mailed out and received about a month before the festival.

11. What if I made (or almost made) all of my CDs and a band dropped out of the lineup?
No problem. These things happen.

12. What if I am not going to go to Coachella?
It is a free country--you are invited, although that seems weird. (I always imagined that this community and [info]coachella would really only be of interest from those people going, or trying to go. Example: I would never imagine having anything to do with any of the UK festivals since I will not get to go.)

13. Do I have to be a member of [info]coachella to participate?
The idea is that this group is a subgroup of the other but again, we are not Nazis here--go ahead.

14. I joined in the beginning but now there are too many members and I can't afford to make and send that many CDs. May I leave and not be held accountable?
Yes. The community will collectively decide on some date to close the community but if you can leave before then.

15. I was too late! Even though you have already traded mixes, can I still participate?
The best way to trade mixes, after the fact, is to just post a message to the community. Several members will be willing to trade one-on-one with you.

16. This seems cool but I really only want to trade with a few people. Is that OK?
See #15. Post a message and set up something with some other community members. Just keep things between yourselves--any posts in this community should only be those having something to do with the entire Coachella mix project.

17. Is this a competion? Can we make it so?
This was discussed between a few people last year and should be brought up again. Unless something formal develops, a good suggestion is for each person to judge and post their opinions here. For example, "Wow, I just got so-and-so's mix and it rocks!!! I really like how they..." Just be constructive in your comments please.

18. Do I have to limit myself to just one CD?
The idea is just one CD. It kind of forces you to work at picking out just enough music for 74 min. But, if you really want to make more CDs for everyone then go ahead.

If your question was not answered, please leave a comment and I will add it. Thank you.
