Hello! I'm rather new here, both to the comm and to sewing I suppose. I don't really know how to use patterns and the like, but I wouldn't mind learning, it's just that nothing I've seen around fits what I would want to make. I got into cosplay about a year and a half ago, and I'd like to stretch it further to making/altering clothes as well.
Right now, I'm having a little dilemma about starting a project. I have this quite hideous bridesmaid dress that I want to alter into something nice for my graduation ball, but I'm quite scared about actually cutting into the thing.
The dress in question is similar to this one
here, only in the palomino colour (the last little square on both ribbon and dress itself). Now I admit, it doesn't look that bad on there, but on me it looks frumpy and disgusting. Plus, pleats at the back?! Ergh. Anyway, I have an idea how to solve the pleats (I'm going with strings of feathers - I have this really cool masquerade mask to wear with the dress, so I want to go with that theme), I suppose my question relates to the hem, and to the bits I want to add on.
I have two lots of netting (royal blue and petrol blue) to add volume to the underneath. The dress itself has three layers; one underskirt (sort of silky material), one normal layer and then one sheer, near-transparent top layer - all cream. My idea is to raise the hemlines (preferably going to get that done in a shop - what are prices normally like for that sort of thing?), and add maybe 3 more layers of fabric underneath, all asymmetrical, in various shades of blue. Would this look more hideous than it does now?
The hemline at the moment is around mid-shin, which is horrible. (I think it's called tea-length?)
Anyway! Sorry to have rambled, I'll get to the point. How would I go about making and attaching the extra "skirts" underneath the one I have now? Also, would cutting a slash up the middle in a sort of v-shape to show off the colours work, or would it be ruining the dress?
If anyone can help me, I would me SO grateful! I know I've not been very helpful in my descriptions... oh yes, I should mention that I don't have a sewing machine, but I managed to make a cosplay costume all hand-sewed, so it's not going to be a problem. If I manage to get a picture of the dress uploaded, I'll edit it in.
