All I have are prefolds, but HRH is getting so mobile - crawling, cruising, climbing - that they're becoming.. not useless, because we haven't had any leaks, but they're not exactly staying put within the wrap. Liners, now they are becoming crinkly and useless :p

To anyone who's also used them, can you recommend any decent means of folding for a toddler? With or without pins/nippas? Or should I think about using them in pockets??

Yes, I have been a very unadventurous cloth user, but it has worked until now *lol*

Crotch is felted, making this bombproof to say the least! They need blocking but I am happy to do that for you if you mention it to me. £5
Hips: 23"
Rise: 15"
Inseam: 6"

Knit by me, again these aren't my best work as I was still perfecting my pattern and technique, our single most favourite pair this last winter! They knit on Krafty Koala's 'Tequila Sunrise' Merino/Alpaca blend and have felted like crazy (I find all alpaca does this to us!) but are so absolutely bombproof it's a joke, they're fab for long car rides, going in a baby carrier, night time, everything you'd need an extra hardworking pair of woollies for! if we were having anymore then these would sooooo not be for sale. £5
Hips: 22"
Rise: 14"
Inseam: 6"

TOP LEFT - Muttaqin 3SR, the outside is a knit fabric and has bobbled slightly, however the inside is still like new, very soft velour (I think it's bamboo), no staining. £7

Swaddlebees medium pocket, has slight staining that *should* sun out, tried to get a picture of it (below) - £4 plus £2 if you want the swaddlebees microfibre insert that goes with it :)

Carter has gotten chubbier so that when we use prefodls we have to use the jellyroll instead of angelfold and thus these embellished prefolds aren't getting used  Think the stripes is Amy Butler (it was off my Nappy Santa!), the fancy one is Amy Butler and then there's the famous Fish in Bags fabric which was one of my all time faves. They're Thirsties (a popular US brand of PFs) unbleached premium prefolds (meaning more absorbant than regular). No stains, EUC, £4 each which includes the postage.

Christmas SOS, SOLD!!
Medium Natural/Black stitching sidesnapping velour Elbee, gorgeously soft still like new! Just not absorbant enough for Carter but a fantastic fit! There is some slight staining on the doubler, see pics, it's not dirt as it's been washed about five times in my paranoia! £12

Medium Sugarpeas wool cover set 1. Hardly used, only two of the inserts between these two sets were ever used, the rest are prewashed only but it's hard to tell which is which so I can't point them out! £20 for the set!

Medium Sugarpeas wool cover set 2.
pre-washing advice, please:)

Hello!

I have (hopefully) just completed my newborn stash, hooray!

Now I need some advice on prepping and pre-washing everything. I know this gets asked all the time in clothdiapering but wanted to ask for some specific advice using products I have available on my particular items.

I live in Ireland, have a front loading washer. I have been using Tesco 'Naturally' brand detergent lately, and often I also use a local natural brand. I also have Napisan. I have a tumble dryer as well as a clothesline.

The items I need to prep are:

-assorted pocket nappies: mostly Swaddlebees, some Happy Heinies, Nature Babies, Fuzzibuns, and Slinki Minkis, all brand new, mixed snaps and aplix

-inserts: microfibre, printed cotton flannel, and hemp, also some ordinary microfibre cloths, all new

-wipes: printed cotton flannel, ordinary face cloths, all new

-general baby clothes and accessories

I would really appreciate any advice on prepping everything and general washing, temps and how many washes, and recommendations for detergents (I shop at Tesco and natural foods shop). Also advice on a wipes solution for my wipes warmer, homemade or otherwise.

Lay your knowledge on me! I would love to have as much info as possible so I can put this in my memories and refer to it later. Thanks so much!

Apologies in advance if this is prying too much, but may I ask how much water you ladies go through? Usage, not cost, of course.

Reason being that we're switching to a meter based on our local company's DIY usage calculator and now I'm getting cold feet. We can switch back to rates within 12 months if it doesn't work out, but hassle, yadda yadda..

For our part, we're 2 adults plus 9mo bub. We wash most dishes in the sink and run the slimline dishwasher a couple of times a week. 1-2 showers a day between us, bath the wee one every other day. Garden/car water generally comes from the water butts.

Fast drying fitted nappy-advice please

hi,
I'm new to lj and my first post is a beg...
Can anyone recommend a really fast-drying nappy that isn't too expensive? At the moment I seem to spend all my time washing and tumble drying my nappies as they take forever to dry hanging up inside and the weather's too rank to hang them out.. I don't really want to spend a lot per nappy unless it's unavoidable as my son is going to be potty training soon and I'll only have 1 in nappies then so can go back to 3 or 4 washes a week with no urgency to get them dry. At the moment I'm using a combination of microfleece-stuffed wonderoos, motherease one-size, flat terries and a hotchpotch of homemade fitted ones, all of which (except the flats) seem to take forever to dry. I'm really looking for some quick drying fitteds that I can use at night or if I'm out and that'll dry (preferably without going crispy) in a couple of hours on a radiator or overnight if I bung them on an airer as I hate using my washer dryer to dry them. It can take up to 5 hours to get them dry in there, which is not only bad for my electricity bill and the environment but means I find it difficult to get any other washing done and (as it's overheated in the past so I don't like to leave it) next to impossible to get out.

My 7mo daughter seems to be getting through our wraps at a rate of knots at the moment - we've got poo squidged right up to the back elastic of our nature babies wraps practically every time, and, with only 7 of them, that means extra washes just so we've got enough for her.
Anyone got any tips for how I can avoid this? Am I just being lazy and not changing her enough, or is there something tricky you can rig up with liners to catch it all?
(We're mostly using nature babies wraps with cotton prefolds, if that helps. I have a couple of tots bots bamboozles, and a couple of lollipop fleeces, but we don't seem to get the same problem with them)

We have been using shaped nappies (Thirsties and Tots Bots) with wraps (Thirsties) since birth with Elisha. The time has finally come where I need to order next size nappies for her.

We love the Thirsties, but I am finding myself entertaining the idea of a pocket nappy perhaps. Looking at Bum Genius, Fuzzibunz, and Itti bitti D'lish

Any thoughts or reccomendations? Did you go from a 2 part system to pockets and hate it? Love it? Used a mix of both?

Does anyone make their own nappies or sanitary towels? What are the best materials to use? As far as cloth nappies what's easiest? Fitteds or pockets? Can you point me in the direction of patterns?

Also, little leather slippers for babies. Anyone make those or know a pattern for them? They seem easy, but I don't wanna take my babies apart to see how they're made!

I'm getting a sewing machine for my birthday! Yay!

help - stink and rash!

We had ye olde ammonia stink come up so I stripped the nappies at the end of last week, same way I always do, one wash with bio (1 liquitab to a 3/4 full 9kg drum) and vinegar and then two more full cycles with no detergent, all at 60 degrees. A good half of our nappies are bamboo so I don't wash them any higher. The bamboo's were still eye wateringly ammonic (is that a word?) after being worn for like, an hour so I gave them a couple of extra washes with no detergent, again at 60. They smell fine out of the washer but as soon as they're worn then it's coming straight back. Also, whenever she's in a cloth my daughter gets a horrible rash around her legs. I had her in moltex while I did all the extra washes and things. Put her in a tots bots this morning and then when I changed her before lunch, she had huge blisters around the top of her legs and a bad nappy rash. Argh! She's back in disposables while I try and figure out whats going on. Help!

(I've washed the nappies with bio for about 6 months, not changed brand or anything, the rash is a recent development)

ETA: Forgot to add, I did use bicarb second time around I did the bamboo's

With regret, I am forced to admit that my adorable 6 month old daughter is much more agile (rolling and the like) on the rare occasions she is in dispicables compared to her lovely totsbots fluffles. Anyone else noticed this and/or can recommend any nappies that are more flexible for a would-be athlete? Do i need to find a cunning terry fold?
