hate to be a downer, but it seems like someone should say something, especially as the memorial service is tonight. josh was the person none of us want to see in our rear-view mirrors, but one of those people you hope comes to your aid quickly when your back's up against the wall. he was a son, husband, dad, and (one that hits home for me in particular) musician...and close in age to many of us in this LJ community.

Kind of a weird question, but does anyone know of any places out here where I can rent a steam cleaner for my carpet? I know that at supermarkets & such where I used to live, they had a little section where you could rent them, but I haven't seen them out here at any Giant Eagles or anything.

Either that, or someplace where I can buy a cheap vacuum-ish steam cleaner? I don't need anything fancy; just something that's enough to clean my efficiency apartment.

State Budget Cuts to Slash Library Funding [24 Jun 2009|03:00pm]

malignance
Governor Strickland's proposed budget would cut funding for Ohio libraries nearly in half. The libraries in this state depend on this money to provide valuable services to the community and a cut of this magnitude would mean substantial reductions, including cuts to materials purchasing and programs, reduced hours, staff furloughs, and lay-offs. Smaller libraries will be forced to close. This would mean the end of the public library as we know it. People are relying on libraries now more than ever in these tough economic times. For some, the library is the only place to access the Internet, where they can apply for jobs or file for unemployment. The library is a place for children to go for story time and it's a place for people to access information. If you believe in the library's mission to inform, entertain, and enlighten, please contact your state representatives and tell them that it's not okay to cut library funding!! Just an odd question from a lifelong Clevelander--

I'm looking for some people to jam with; I'm a bass player currently by her lonesome and though people have recommended Open Mic Night at places like The Barking Spider and The House of Swing, I'm not really a solo performer and I haven't the courage to get on stage just yet.

So I'm wondering if anyone reading this is a musician or knows anyone in the Cleveland area who would be interested in informal jamming; no conditions--I'm just an itchy bassist looking for people to play with. My main style is in the Who/Zeppelin vein, but I am fairly flexible and can even play Disco Inferno when I've a mind to.

(I thought of posting this to [info]cleveland_indie but I honestly have absolutely no idea what indie music is and I recognize none of the bands in the comm profile. :-\)

Edit: House of SWING, not Blues. Got a little ahead of myself there . . .

Cleveland Library Card? [10 Jun 2009|04:42pm]

spatulistic
Do you have a Cleveland library card that you never use? Want to make an extra buck and help a non-Cleveland resident out?

The Cleveland library has some really good digital library resources, including a program where you can rent ebooks and put them on your device. The problem is, if you're not a Cleveland resident, you can't access it, and there is no way to pay a yearly fee (like with some other libraries) to gain access. So, I'm stuck. That's where I'm hoping you will come in.

I'm preferably looking for someone who has an active Cleveland library card but never uses it and is willing to give me the information so that I can access the digital collections. I will paypal you $15 to do so and you don't have to do anything - just be a resident :)

Rest assured that I can't (and won't) do anything harmful with your library card. I won't reserve books and I won't have access to your personal information. I just need the card information.

If anyone can help, that would be great. Thank you :)

ASSASSINATED ABORTION DR. HONORED

Voices and Choices
Tuesdays 9-10pm
WRUW-FM 91.1 Cleveland

(you can download this show to listen to later see below for info)

our show tonight is dedicated to dr. george tiller.

on sun., may 31, 2009, dr. george tiller, an abortion provider in wichita, kansas, was assassinated while attending church. while this self-righteous gunman no doubt thinks that he did the world a service, he killed a good man and he sentenced women in this country and in other countries to death as a result of his actions.

dr. tiller is one of the few abortion doctors in the united states who performs late-term abortions. he did this despite domestic terrorists trying to thwart his every move.

over the years:

* dr. tiller was shot in both arms in a failed assassination attempt
* his clinic was bombed
* anti-choice activists relocated to kansas for the sole purpose of harassing dr. tiller and his staff
* he was taken to court, including being subjected to grand jury investigations--in an attempt to discredit the legitimacy of his practice--none of these were successful
* his life was always under threat, always

throughout it all, dr. tiller stood strong. despite being shot in both arms in 1993, he went to work the following day.

why? because dr. tiller knew what was at stake: women's lives. when women/girls can't get or afford safe abortions, they do what they think they need to do and that sometimes results in women dying. dr. tiller knew that.

we mourn dr. tiller's life. we also must celebrate his life--for dr. tiller was a man who loved life and made deliberate decisions.

a fist to my heart for dr. tiller
a fist to the sky for dr. tiller

WRUW FM 91.1 Cleveland now taking submissions for 2009 Studio-A-Rama (annual outdoor concert) [27 May 2009|08:30am]

undertheivy99
[ mood | calm ]

Greetings, local bands!

WRUW 91.1 FM is now accepting submissions for the 2009 Studio-A-Rama (most likely to take place in early September). At the bottom of this post is an e-mail from the guy organizing it listing what needs to be sent in.  A few need-to-know things:

1. The SAR submissions need to be mailed in to:
WRUW-FM
11220 Bellflower Rd
Cleveland, OH 44106

2. The deadline for submissions is July 17th

3. I strongly recommend your band send in a CD with their THREE strongest songs on it rather then a full CD. When I was on a SAR previewing team years ago and we had roughly 50 submissions to go through, we would just play the first minute of the first three tracks on full-length CDs, so if the best stuff wasn't among them, well, tough.

4. Make sure ALL the songs on the submitted CD are ORIGINALS. I don't care if the band does the world's best cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," it should NOT be on the CD. We're promoting LOCAL bands and THEIR work.

That's all I can think of now. Hope it helps.

Patty

Date: Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 6:28 PM

Patty & everyone esle,

We are starting to accept submissions right now. I am going to make a wav cart soon announcing Studio-A submissions, Neal Darewaves put together a press release, and Erin Kray is working on a flyer. The deadline will be Friday July 17th. Each submission must contain a CD with at least three songs (can be a burned CD), a band photo (doesn't need to be an actual hard copy photograph, it can just be a photo printed out on a sheet of paper), a brief band bio with the full name of each band member, plus contact info and a list of web sites where the band's music can be found. Patty, if you could pass this info along to those two bands that would be great and everyone else please tell any bands that you know to submit! Thanks. I'll talk to ya later.

Looking for roommate [10 Apr 2009|06:11pm]

steppinrazor
[ mood | busy ]

Anyone out there in need of a roommate? I'm hoping to get a place in the Chelsea building in Tremont, on W. 14th, but I'll need a second person. It's 2 bedroom, takes cats (I have one cat), $300 a month per person which includes heat, hot water, water and sewer.

Or if you already happen to live in the Tremont/Ohio City area and need a roomie, I'd be interested.

I'm 29, a professional barista at Phoenix Coffee, female, pretty laid back but clean. I'm not much of a partier, but I do enjoy going to OTHER people's parties from time to time. Mostly I'm looking for a relaxed roommate to just kick it with. Cat is non-negotiable. She is also very clean and a bit shy.

A random lunchtime in Cleveland... [09 Apr 2009|03:46pm]

almostwitty

Asian doughnutsThese are apparently Asian doughnuts, as offered to us by the waitress at the Cleveland cafeteria I was at lunchtime. Despite their innate Asianness - I mean, they’re called Asian doughnuts for a reason, right? - I was unable to detect any Asianness in them. No barbecued pork, no wasabi, no egg tart. Nothing.

En route out, carrying our leftovers, we somehow attract the attention of a slightly old man who strikes up a conversation about our leftovers. Assuming he’s after some money, I give him $2. But instead of going away as his London equivalent would do, he carries on talking to us about his job working in the Florida nuclear regulatory commission, his daughter who designed one of the buildings along the street, and he even shows us his drivers licence. For some strange reason, none of it rings true. After all, why would random strangers strike up conversations with other random strangers?

Later on that afternoon, leaving campus, we spot a shedload of police cars and a fire truck surrounding one particular street. It later turns out that a “shameless” person had streaked across the area. As you do...
