Hoc Me Laetum Facit.

This is proof that the Latin gods are not only surviving but also still with a certain sense of humor.

Our college's most distinguished scholar this year was a Classics/Archaeology major who is headed to grad school. She used Latin in her commencement address and we are not Harvard. Or a school with a strong (or any) Classics tradition. And yet Latin (and Greek) are thriving and are being recognized b the university. I still have faith and m sense of humor.

Right, totally. Classics is doing fine as an academic discipline within the humanities, arguably far better than, say, philosophy or art history. Digital humanities projects were born within classics departments, owing much strength to Perseus (at Tufts [$1B endowment]). But the rigorous, formal study of Latin and Greek remains inaccessible to so many people that it's silly to hold a Harvard commencement address up as proof positive of an enduring Classics tradition.

Someone gave a similar speech at the Virgil Academy right before my high school graduation in 2005. Then one of my professors at the University of Chicago kept referencing Star Wars all throughout a reading of Lucretius. Star Wars and Latin in apposition are alive and well throughout academic institutions.

I actually posted this last year.

But since I was also the one who put up the video on YouTube I think I'll leave it up.

I didn't catch it last year. Also, last year I didn't have a browser on which YouTube would play correctly.

Anyway ... now I have it added to my "favorites."
