Thank-you gifts for professors
Does anyone have any ideas of what a classics prof might like as a gift? I really want to get my thesis advisor something for being so brilliant and amazingly helpful.

Wine? ;)
I made cookies for those who wrote me recommendations and they were a big hit, but if you're kitchenless or not a baker, maybe not. Or you can offer to take him/her out for dinner/lunch/coffee.

Hilariously enough, I've found that a thank-you note tends to be the best way to go. If you put some time, thought and genuine gratitude into what you write, I think the prof would appreciate it more than anything material.

Ah, and whatever you decide to go with, deliver it after grades have been released. To this day, my early civs professor teases me for attempting to bribe her during the exam period. :D

Ou Phrontis for all your nerdy needs. (I haven't yet purchased anything from them, but I really want to.)

Dude, where'd you hear of Ou Phrontis? One of its owners was a roommate of mine in college.

I don't remember how I first came across it. Stumbled upon a link somewhere on LJ, I think. (And then I promptly bookmarked it and made a wishlist for when I'm no longer trying to live off of a TA stipend.)

Excellent. I'm happy it's making its rounds, and I hope they're doing well with it.

To the OP: If it's at all relevant, this is a fantastic selection, and one of my favorite designs on the site: http://www.cafepress.com/ouphrontis/1212101

It's available on shirts, bags, magnets, etc. under the other categories on the left side.

You could try the Unemployed Philosophers Guild. They have fun stuff. I'm quite fond of their stuffed Socrates.

I was going to suggest wine _and_ a thank you note, or maybe instead of a bottle a gift cert. from a posh wine shop.

This may be a bit cheesy, but I think it's nice. Most good advisors feel rewarded by the fact that they've helped shape and encourage another scholar. I grabbed a paragraph from my thesis that was eloquent and really captured a key point where my advisor and I collaborated, and then had it printed and framed. It was a nice memento of all our conversations.

I know just the thing. (For Hellenists, of course; Latinists will probably prefer something like this.)

Well I think this is cool but I'm not going to purchase one because I'd rather have an image of a female statue...Artemis, Aphrodite the usual crowd...
