Anyone have recommendations for good Dixie Land themed music featuring clarinet solos etc? Preferably easy to find on iTunes songs would be great. I really like Dixie Land but the lack of exposure to it in a classical music school is hard. I want to start a dixie land group at my school in the future maybe and listening to it for a while would be great. ^^

If I play my clarinet while I have a cough, will my reed catch the cough too? And after I'm better, will I essentially be catching my cough back off my reed over and over again?

And if so, what's the best way to disinfect a reed which may be a little diseased?

Thanks for any advice.

Francaix Concerto

Perhaps this is common knowledge, but is the Francaix Concerto supposed to be for clarinet in A? It would take it out of that horrendous key (although I haven't tested to see if it would actually be easier) and also make that low E-flat accessible (in concert pitch terms). Has it be done, was it intended to be done, and if not, what do people do about that low E-flat?

Hello, all. I've been watching this community from my old journal for a while now (just made this account today), and I finally decided to post. ^_^ My name is Amber and I'm a sophomore in central New York. I'm going to play at NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Solo-Festival for my first time in early May, which is basically being graded for a solo you play for an adjudicator, and I believe it also entails some scales. I've already started learning my solo and I know scales decently well because I'm taking Music Theory, but does anyone have any tips for getting ready for solo-fest?
Thanks!!

Can I ask.

When you play the clarinet. I can play it okay, but then mid-way though an 1/2 hour lesson my mouth get really really dry and I can't produce a note .. so I was thinking is it because I'm dehydrated or what. ? I think it's dehydration because afterwards I drink water and then play it again and I can play it perfectly.

So. I guess the question comes now . -
When you play the clarinet during mid lesson to take a sip of water is that rude or what? I don't know if I should refrain from doign that. Also how do you keep your mouth hydrated and like not dry? Do you drink loads beforehand

Thanks. sorry If I've rambled on.

Hey all.
I have a quick question for any clarinet players who play sax on the side. My band director recently gave my jazz band the piece "Theme from the asphalt jungle" by Duke Ellington for the Greenwich CT jazz fest in March. The only thing is, the version he gave us is the real version, no dumbing down of anything. I'm a clarinestist, but I play bari sax for the jazz band and the song has me playing up in the range of like high E, F, F#, and G above the staff. Is there any easy way of playing those notes up so high? I've only been playing the bari for about 3 months, and while I can hit all the notes, playing them quickly is difficult and does not sound good. Any suggestions or trick fingerings? Is the bari sax even supposed to play that high? I thought clarinets were the only ones crazy enough to bust out the high register (flutes don't count). =]

One more question on the side. I'm playing the clarinet in my school's pit orchestra for Beauty and the Beast (yay!) but a lot of the music asks for vibratto. I can't even do it on the sax. Is there any easy, fool proof way to use vibratto on the clarinet? The few times I've tried I just sound drunk and flat.

Thanks a bunch.

Humidifying!

Well, seeing as it is winter, I know a lot of clarinets (and instrumentalists in general) have trouble keeping their instruments properly humidified. I'm a student up in the mountains, so it gets very cold outside. Living in a dorm also makes the air very dry in the room where my clarinets are kept. I humidify my dorm room as well as keeping 3 dampits in my double case and one in my single case. Sadly, the rings on my barrel still get loose and the ring around the bell on my A clarinet is loose as well.
Humidifying my room is pretty much a lost cause. I can really only get the humidity to about 20%. I plan to invest in a second humidifier.
Dampits are pretty useful because they take about 24 hours to dry out.
Does anyone have any methods for humidifying that aren't by using dampits? I'd like to experiment with other things.

Hi guys-

I'm looking for some solo clarinet pieces that are rather sad. Like extremely sad, depressing, and emotional. Something I can express myself with. Difficulty level is not an issue. Any ideas? Thanks.
