flutter-tonguing
I'm so frustrated -- in "Blue Shades" I have to be able to flutter-tongue but I just can't seem to figure out how to do it. I can't roll my r's in any way, shape, or form. Any ideas? I have about a month left to learn how.

In general I find that most people can roll their Rs in either the front of their tongue or with the back of their tongue. I only know how to roll with the front of my tongue, try this:

make a "th" sound with your tongue and air, and make sure the corners of your mouth are pulled in slightly. Gradually, pull your tongue back into your mouth while still blowing air until the tip of your tongue is just under your front teeth. This might get your Rs rolling. Make sure to use a steady stream of air.

I asked my teacher when we played Shades, and she said you can't really do it on clarinet. But she said basically to just do vibrato. I know, boring.

I've heard rolling rs is pretty much a genetic thing, and that those that can't but must make that flutter can learn to get that effect using their throats. Can you circular breathe? use the same part of your throat to growl.

I went ahead and made my comment into an actual post. (It's quite long!) I hope it helps!
