Do you mean an actual link or a lj-cut?

an actual link goes like this-
<*a* href* = *"urlhere"* *>
without the stars and spaces, except between the a h, the space remains there.

And lj-cut hides things, making it somewhat invisible until it's lj-cut link is clicked on-
<*lj*-*cut*="nameofcut*"*>
Just remove the stars.

with the removal of stars, of course.

And if you meant why-
Why= We make lj-cuts so we can make our posts more organized and if you have a long fanfiction, no one wants to scroll through all that when they are viewing their Friends List. It's just for everyone's convenience ^^-
