The day should be a sunny and warm one. Yesterday was a pretty quiet day at work. The weather was awesome. It near perfect. Not hot. Nice warm breeze. My Boss was pretty busy writing and chit-chatting. He got a new grant to get a super duper fancy machine to analyze cells. It'll be one of the few in the area so a lot of outside labs will use it too. They'll have to pay for the privilege. Anyways my Boss was excited about it. I didn't have much to do other than order supplies. I suppose I could of done other things but I'm not sure what. I got home and mowed the lawn. Problem! I mowed half the lawn and turned off the mower to get a drink. I tried to turn it back on. I couldn't pull the cord all the way to start it. Oh oh. No idea what happened. Something must of gotten jammed inside it. Whatever the case, I had to get it fixed. Nope nothing. SOL.... My Dad ended up bringing to the hardware store to have it checked out since neither of us knew how to fix it. Probably something stupid but uggh. I am tempted to just go get a new mower. Get an electric one.. .Easier to use and less caustic on the environment. The whole thing was a pain. I have the whole backyard to mow. I do have a really old lawn mower that makes me nauseous because of the fumes. Also it is a mega pain since the handles are set too low. They're rust into place so I can't move them up. My Mom could use it but I don't want her too. blah. What a pain. Today, I am going to relax. I might go out later though. Not sure. |

Ever since ditching their adorably whiny, snarky koala mascot, Qantas has had a strong, longstanding connection to the slogan "The Spirit of Australia". .. You'd almost think that someone was trying to send a message, and that the airline -- or Australia itself -- was being targeted, wouldn't you?! Now obviously, it's premature to say anything about what happened, other than the fact that Youtube has given us all unprecedented opportunity to see perhaps the happiest plane landing most of us will ever get the chance to see... with applause, even. But all I can say is that if I'm flying in a plane, I don't want it to be "The Spirit of America", or "California Spirit", or "American Pride" or anything of the sort. How about a nice, boring name that wouldn't attract anyone trying to make a political statement. My advice... name the planes like they were beloved household pets. Golden Retriever. Spot, etc... and if the terrorists want to blow up the planes, let 'em try. "Those bastards blew up Fluffy!" Not only would the public get seriously pissed off at the terrorists, but the terrorists themselves would be mercilessly teased by all their friends on their choice of target. It's easy to brag about blowing up the World Trade Center, but if you blow up Flopsy or Muffin, you'll never hear the end of it. Not the kind of publicity that the bad guys want, really. Meanwhile, I would just advise to Qantas... bring back the koala. Because given how scary explosive decompression and terrorist bombs can be, you'll want your passengers to be thinking of the cute more often. |

I hate to break Haruhiko's heart, but it looks like our erstwhile former Senator from North Carolina may have a serious mistress / lovechild problem... The story went straight from the National Enquirer to a Beverley Hilton hotel guard to Fox News... because, obviously, Fox would find it "newsworthy". Anything to get Obama out of the spotlight, I guess. That said, as much as I dislike the source, I fully expect the allegation to be essentially correct. National Enquirer actually has a pretty good record when it comes to political affairs, and investigates with a bloodlust rarely seen in the mainstream media. Considering how desperate John McCain's campaign has been lately, obviously any bad news for any Democrat is Barack Obama's fault, and clearly reflects on his morality... whatever that means. (Sure, it's a nebulous argument, but for people who like to be disagreeable just for the hell of it, it's clearly good enough. Given that John Edwards' wife is currently fighting stage IV breast cancer, well... let's just say that John Edwards' timing just sucks. I mean, it's really low and disrespectful... almost like something John McCain would've done to one of his wives! Obama/Edwards, 2008-2008. RIP. |

It was "okay." I was a bit disappointed. I'm not sure the plot, the mystery that was being solved was really an "x-file." It didn't deal with aliens. There wasn't a shapeshifting monster, or mythical beast in cryptozoology. I'll put the basic plot under a cut for those who don't want to know what it is. Putting that aside, there were quite a few funny lines- which I actually don't know if I liked. That made it seem less like an episode of the X-Files and more like an appeal to the masses. Throughout the movie, parts were decent, while other parts made me think back to the episode "Hollywood A.D." - where a friend of Walter Skinner's makes a movie about Mulder and Scully. Some of it was like that. ( Spoilers ) Overall: It was fairly entertaining, with a few funny lines- just nothing super great. There weren't any real great special effects, mostly because there was nothing to get cool special effects of. For that reason, I'd probably suggest another movie (perhaps the Dark Knight) in priority of this one, but this one isn't too bad if you have some extra money. |

The day should be a warm and sunny day. YEA!!! Yesterday was a pretty miserable one. Heavy rain and wind just made it a dreary day. I got soaked as I was walking into work., I got soaked walking back to work from lunch. My pants were so wet. Uggh. Even with an umbrella, the heavy rain and wind just made it worthless. Work itself was ok. The results for the first half of my experiment were decent. I really didn't know what to expect but the data did confirm my old data. Good thing. Of course working it out, I spilt a few things on my pants. It didn't leave a stain but it just wasn't the way I wanted to start the day. I stayed focused and made it through without any more problems. Lab meeting was ok. The presenter was better than last weeks. I understood what she was talking about so that was helpful. And I didn't nod off either. smirks Thankfully there is no meeting next week. One of the big wigs asked if we should take a break from having the meetings. I was tempted to say yes but my Boss spoke out and said we should continue them. Urrh. Oh well. Today, thank God its Friday. Nothing really planned for the weekend. I will probably see Batman. |

Found a new trailer park today. Actually, it was another redneck resort by Thornapple Lake. This fucking place was out of Deliverance, complete with scary bad tempered toothless drunk hillbilly's, deformed children, aging biker sluts wearing too little clothing in front of the kids, dilapidation and decay. Ok, actually the place itself wasn't that bad, everybody had a boat or pontoon, and the trailers weren't as ramshackle as others in the area, but it was like every other motherfucker was on meth or had a brother-in-law who sold. I saw a child dwarf. I saw malformed heads and bodies, whiskered women and lipless men. I saw a twelve year old, otherwise normal looking, who couldn't count his change or fucking read the menu. Actually, I run into that a lot. I made oddles. |

We had a very good organizational meeting for our new convention on Saturday. Wasn't a huge group, but a number of people have expressed interest since. We had a good discussion about basic issues: governance, mission, budget, and convention planning (hotel, recruitment). The meeting actually went longer than I expected; people had some good ideas. Given how early, small, and not-yet-established we are, the amount of recruiting we have to do is fairly small. I have asked Went to the housefilk at Sunday Marah and I went to see The Dark Knight. Excellent film, Hugo and Oscar-worthy. Complex plot, many morally complex choices for character. Special effects very good without overwhelming the rest of the movie (unlike, say, Iron Man). I want to see it in an IMAX theatre. Monday the new web site for the Seattle in 2011 Worldcon Bid was made public. Excellent work by Partly caught up on sleep. Must do laundry. |

I go hiking a lot in the mountains (often to the top of them). It can sometimes be difficult to explain to friends where exactly I'm going, however, since it has occurred to me people don't pay attention to the mountains as much as I do (and don't really know the different peaks). Not a problem! That's why I've decided to produce a nice little guide to the mountains around Las Cruces. I'll start with the basics in this post, and then move into more specifics (talking about each range in detail, and even a few peaks and hiking areas).![]() On the map, I've labeled the major peaks of the area (although I just realized I forgot to label Bishop's Cap- which is located at the very bottom of the image). The Organ Mountains have quite a few named peaks, so I only labeled the highest point (the Organ Needle). There are three main mountain ranges in the area, or at least that people should be concerned with for hiking purposes: The Organ Mountains, east of Las Cruces, are the most well-known. It’s probably one of the most popular backdrops to photos of the city and the area, and it’s generally hard to miss in town. I'll spend a good amount of time explaining the different peaks. The Robledo Moutains are west of Las Cruces, essentially running north from Picacho Peak (another landmark of the area). In addition to Picacho Peak, there are two other major named peaks in this range, both in the northern part of the area by Radium Springs. The highest point in the range is Robledo Mountain. North of that is Lookout Peak (although I’ve also heard of it named “Signal Peak”). The third major range in the area is the Doña Ana Mountains, north/northeast of Doña Ana. There are two major named peaks in the Doña Anas: Doña Ana Peak and Summerfold Mountain (not shown on the map- it’s a bit farther north, and more separated). Another major range that might be worth pointing out is the San Andreas Mountains, which are the mountains directly north of the Organ Mountains, on the other side of US Highway 70. This range, however, is closed to public access. It's on a wildlife refuge, that is completely surrounded by White Sands Missile Range. |

Don't drink and drive, then post on FacebookOnline hangouts like Facebook and MySpace have offered crime-solving help to detectives and become a resource for employers vetting job applicants. Now the sites are proving fruitful for prosecutors, who have used damaging Internet photos of defendants to cast doubt on their character during sentencing hearings and argue for harsher punishment. Of course, it's hardly surprising that the people who drink and get into accidents are the same people who post pictures of themselves being stupid for everyone to see. |

So here's something supersweet I read on the site My Money Blog You can get up to 10 'buy one get one free' coupons of the 'Entertainment Book' variety, mostly for restaurants (or rather, that's mostly what I plan on using), via entering this access code: OPADINE08 and visiting this page: http://www.saversguide.com/custom/orbit Registration is pretty easy, and there's a bunch of restaurants that I either eat at or would greatly like to eat at. In other news, I'm thinking of getting a printer. Considering that this website is of the 'click here to print this coupon and have your printer options pop up rather then a web page', and I have to hack through some javascript to get to the actual url when it would be much easier if I actually had a printer of my own rather then needing to get Drew to print stuff at work or Carolyn to print stuff from her printer. See, I generally don't have printers. The problem is this: I don't generally print things in color, unless it's incidental (like a Google Maps printout). I don't care about photos. As far as I'm concerned, a computer means I never have to have a printed version of a photo taking up space ever again. When I print things, it's because I want directions somewhere, or I'm printing out instructions, or a recipe, or so on. Text things that I'd be just as happy with if they were black and white. So my black cartridge always goes first. Then I'll replace it. A little later, the color ink will run out. Then I'll get bitter because apparently no one makes printers that you can use with only a black cartridge. Then I'll stick the printer in the corner and forget out it for awhile. Then eventually, needing to print something, I'll go buy another color cartridge. By then, all of the remaining black ink has dried up, because the printer sat too long. Then I'll get bitter and forget about the printer for awhile, and the color ink will dry up too. Or I'll try to get a 'refurbished' ink cartridge on Ebay only to have it b0rk the printer up. And that's another thing: I can buy waterproof ink in a range of colors from Plaza or Micheal's for a mere few dollars, what's the deal with printer ink being so much more? Anyhow. I'm thinking about one of those hyper-cheap Walmart Lexmark printers. The printer (plus ink) costs less then buying the replacement ink for it. Meaning that once I've used up the ink, I could just 'upgrade' to a newer printer of the same type, and sell the old one for really cheap on Craigslist. I've heard of others doing this technique, and it seems quite feasible for my printing needs. Admittedly, I feel like this method generates entirely too much 'surplus printers' waste, but I think that problem would vanish quickly if printer ink was priced a bit more reasonably. And, as I'm in the process of selling off a few things Drew and I don't need around anymore, the cost of the printer would be fully covered by just a few of those items. |

The day should be a rainy and cool one. Yesterday started off to a slow start. I woke up a bit late though I didn't miss my train, It was kind of a bad way to start a busy day. Work though seemed to a lot easier than I had expected. I seemed to have so many problems running this similar experiment and it took forever to complete. Yesterday work went smooth and easy. I knew what to do. Anticipated and prepared things early so I wouldn't have to rush around while I was doing the experiment. All I had to do was mix and dump and wait. It was easy. The only fly in the ointment was waiting for the human cells to arrive via Fedex. Ooy. This delay turned out to be a little blessing. It gave me a chance to get some food. I got back and the cells arrived. The experiment was fairly easy. Of course it helped that I had run this experiment a bunch of times already so I knew what to expect. The only real problem was that the machine I used to collect data was acting up for some reason. It gave data but it was messing up the control samples. An empty well is not supposed to give a signal. Urrh. Oh well. Hopefully my Boss can figure out the data. I wasn't tired by the time I finished up everything. It was odd. I thought I had forgotten something but I didn't. Everything was working except the machine so it wasn't on me. HA, I do hope its fixed because I have to run this experiment again next Tuesday. It started to pour when I left work. It was crazy. The sky was dark and cool. It felt nice. I didn't mind the lightening and thunder. It was weird weather though. Today, I have to finish up another part of the experiment and I have a long lab meeting. Zzzzz. |

The day should be a rainy day. Happy Birthday Yesterday was another relaxing day at work. I had a few things to do but they didn't take me too long to do. I continued the month long experiment which I'll start wrapping up today. Hopefully the data will be good. The company liked the data I had in the last round. So hopefully this will confirm the other data. I also order about a thousand bucks worth of lab supplies. Ahh nothing like spending my Boss's money. smirks. It was necessary stuff like test tubes and gloves. Ooy. My coworkers and I really went through these supplies pretty fast. Oh well. I think we'll be ok moneywise. The repair didn't show up to finish repairs. He probably was waiting to get some supplies first. No sure. I went for a walk outside. It was such an awesome day. The weather was perfect. Not too hot. There was a gentle breeze. The humidity was still around though but it wasn't bad. I went to Borders' and picked up a indoor grilling cookbook that was on clearance. I'll have to try some of the recipes. They don't look too hard. I can put my Foreman grill to use and Ronco rotisserie. GRIN I also picked up Harry Turtledove's latest book, "The Man with an Iron Heart" about an alternate history where Nazi resistance fighters carried on the war even after Hitler died a la Iraq. The whole storyline is rather a stretch but its still an interesting read. I read a good third of it before I got home. Nice easy read. Today, I'm going to be buried in work all day. Probably working late.. Oh joy.Hopefully it'll be my last busy day til next Tuesday. |

I keep having sex dreams about members of the burlesque show. They have been pretty frequent and vivid. I've never really dreamt about the burlesque show before, and now I start in with full on hardcore penetration. And not all of them have been pleasant, either. Some of the scenarios have been awkward, too, trysts that didn't quite work out. And some of them were pretty hot. And during all of them, my penis looked like a parrot, complete with feathers, wings, and talons. I didn't have sex with Phil from the burlesque show in my dreams, at least not in this incarnation. |

The day should be a warm and humid one. Yesterday started off slow. I really was glad since I had problems falling asleep the night before. The heat and humid was a killer. I had to close the windows because of the heavy rains. I loved the lightening and thunder though. It made me kind of sleepy throughout the day. Work was quiet. Thankfully the AC was on but the heat was also on as well. Odd. I didn't feel too much heat though. I vegged out for most of the day. My Japanese coworker didn't show up to work. Odd. Maybe he took the day off. No surprise. The repair guy showed up late in the afternoon to fix the incubator. The incubator had a leak somewhere and the guy had a problem finding it. He could only replace some tubes. He's supposed to return today to finish up the repairs. Hopefully he can find the leak. Its expensive to refill the CO2 tanks. Today, I do have a few things to do at work so I won't be bored. Its all a nice build up to tomorrow. |

Tropical Storm Dolly has a good chance of becoming a hurricane soon, and landing somewhere around Brownsville, Texas, near the Mexican border. The good news is, it looks likely to be a low-level, fast moving hurricane. Yay. The bad news is, it's likely to interfere with about 10% of the nation's oil supply, and about 20% of its natural gas supply for several days... assuming it doesn't do any serious infrastructure damage. Boo. Just be glad it's not showing signs of going further north at this moment. That would be expensive, considering. Meanwhile, the water is hot off of Africa, with a fairly good chance that other storms may soon be on their way... 'tis the season...! |
