Play the World Question
Does anyone use Stealth Fighters for anything?
I'm in a large scale air war and wonder if I could take out his Jet fighters with my stealth fighters? I've just never found a use for them.

i never found much of a use for them either. The jet fighters are better for air superiority and the stealth bombers - well they are badass ;-)

I agree. I thought maybe I was missing something with the Stealth fighters. I wonder why they are not considered an upgraded Jet fighter to give you more air intercept power?

because a stealth fighter is just a bomber that can fly faster than a normal bomber and do a little bit of evasion like a fighter. They aren't air superiority weapons like fighters.

Ah! so do you find then they are good to send in first against a city that has Jet fighters on patrol?

I've never used them in Civ, I was referring to reality.

Fighters and stealth fighters.

I've never found any use for them either, and rarely make them..
Related comment/question: my fighters don't fight. Squares adjacent to the city they're supposed to be defending get relentlessly bombed, and they do nothing. Is this usual?

I too have found that my fighters don't always intercept. i might have 4 or 5 in a city and it will get pounded by the enemy. I'm sure it's some formula that is used to calculate whether the fighter will intercept or not.

I've also found SAMS to be useless. IN all my years of playing, I've never had a SAM shoot down an enemy. I have seen the computer do it maybe a half dozen times to me.

i never liked using planes at all. but im not as experienced as all of you. by the time planes get invented, considering i usually play at chieftain, im pretty much controlling half the world and have most of my standing army of my former conquests to beat anybody i want to.

playing at emperor level, the only serious advantage to having SAMs is they let you construct your Star Wars defense grid (can't remember what that's called). Once that's built, it's a fair defense against nuclear attack. If you have that and your enemies don't, AND you're crazy enough to launch a surprise nuclear attack, well...

Ya, I usually build 5 SAMS real quick so I can build my SDI shield. I've just never had a SAM of mine take out a plane of the computers.
And the Stealth fighters don't do much of anything.

nah, my SAMs don't take out computer planes either. Stealth Fighters are worthless.

There are a bunch of useless units though, or units of severely limited use: Explorer, Helicopter, Privateer, Chariot - was that their nod to bloated military budgets?

I agree with all of those.
I've tried using privateers just to mess with the other countries navies but they are so weak and come in late enough.......they are worthless.

Pirates were the scourge of merchant vessels. most military ships could hold their own and then some.

I used to include Marine and Paratrooper on the list, but I've put holes in coastal city defenses more than once with Marine units, and I've taken cities entirely with Paratroopers :)

good point about the pirates. that's a more realistic view. too bad Civ doesn't use traders like previous versions did.

I too use marines to gain a foothold on a continent by taking a coastal city. They are also good for taking out those island cities that are one square or two with a unit on the empty square.
