Hey Everyone!
The past few years I have been on a walk to reconcile who I am with my faith. In that walk, after much prayer and thought, I have come to understanding that God loves me for who I am, no matter what.I know that everyone reading this email comes from all backgrounds and walks of life. Right now I am reaching out for your support. This fall I am going to spend two months on a bus with 20 other people traveling through the south to various faith based colleges and university's, some of which are HBCU's, to start a dialogue about their anti gay polices on the 2008 Soulforce Q Equality Ride. At most of these schools if a student comes out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender they are either forced to undergo therapy to stay in school or they are expelled no questions asked. On that mere ground alone. I personally feel that as a person of faith it is my duty to stand up as a voice for the voiceless and say that using the Bible as a tool of oppression is something that needs to stop. The Bible has been used to oppress people of color, women, youth and now LGBT people. So what exactly am I asking for? A donation to me for the Equality Ride. Soulforce takes care of ALL of my expenses while I am on the road. Food, housing, anything that is related to the Equality Ride and you can imagine that with 20 of us, that is not cheap. Each rider has a goal of $3500.00 to raise. I am asking to donate what you can. 10 dollars will give me food for a nice dinner and 100 will give me meals for a week. Now your wondering how you donate, its easy and you can do it online! Just go to my official Equality Rider page at https://www.soulforce.org/zak_rittenhouse to read my personal statement as well as see how much I have raised! If you want to know more about the Equality Ride and how the 2007 Ride went check out http://www.equalityride.com. Thanks in advance for your support!!
Zak https://www.soulforce.org/zak_rittenhouse http://www.equalityride.com. P.S Help spread the word and pass this along to your friends! Thanks!

Hey everyone,
From the looks of things, it seems like maybe there hasn't been a lot of writing going on in this group for a while. Nevertheless, I'm still going to try and get some advice from you guys.
I'm graduating in May and I think I want to take a year off before I go on to grad school. I heard about City Year and I'm very interested in the program. So I was just wondering if those who have been doing it could tell me what you think so far. Is it worth it? Is it amazing? Is it terrible? Do you feel like you're making any impact? I've seen all the raves about City Year from the website, but like I told my friend, I'm sure the website for Nazi Camp would make their program sound amazing, too. So I want opinions from people who are actually participating in City Year. And if you leave a comment, could you tell me where it is you're doing the program? I haven't decided yet where I would want to go.
Thanks a lot, hope you have time to give me a little help!

Has anyone found out whether they've been accepted into City Year for the 2007-2008 year? I found out last Friday and I'm excited. I just have to stop procrastinating and send in the forms. :)

I was wondering if anyone here has any general input on cityyear Joburg, South Africa. I am highly aiming towards the program after undergrad. Also, does the program only allow for 10 month service?

I just had my first interview for City Year Seattle. I'm pretty sure I rambled a lot because I was definitely nervous, but I talked about lots of past experiences I've had and my enthusiasm for City Year was definitely very evident.
And..then when I was in the middle of writing this I got a call and just had my second interview. I think it was a little better than the first. I wasn't as nervous that time around.
Now the application process is done.
I suppose now I just hope for the best until I hear back from them in early May...

I was thinking about doing City year but it looks like I've just missed the April 15th deadline for applications. The next and final deadline is not until May something. Do you think I still have any chance of getting accepted if I apply to the final deadline?
I will be graduating from High school in June and after participating in the Running Start program I will have enough college credits to enter as a sophomore. I would really like to experience life without school and so I made the decision to take a transition year and apply to college for the 2008 school year. I would really like to do something meaningful in this year that will help me find direction when I do go back to school. City year seems like a good opportunity.
I do have some uncertainties about it. I have a lot of trouble getting up in the morning. I have serious insomnia (it's a problem I've been dealing with and trying to change my whole life and it definitely isn't something with a quick fix) making it to work by 8:00 may be a problem. I'm also unsure if as an 18 year old I will have the skills necessary. Are there many other 18 year olds in City year? I will be applying to Seattle. I am looking into other volunteer opportunities but I really like the idea of working with City year because it is in a team. It seems like a good way to meet interesting people. Are the hours at all flexible? Are there many high school educated people?
Any information would be much appreciated.

I just have a quick question. I'm applying for the Apr. 15 application deadline, which is really soon, and my online application is ready to go except I'm just wondering about one thing. I've been trying to get ahold of someone in Seattle where I'm applying but is the camp week so I haven't had any success.
It says to write around 500 words for each essay. However, because I like to write, mine have come out longer...like around 1000 words. Will they mind if I turn in longer essays or should I try to shorten it?

1:34 pm - City Year Seattle/King County

Hey,
I'm applying for the Apr. 15 deadline for City Year Seattle/King County and I have a question regarding diversity and sexual orientation.
I'm a white college-educated female (I've been reading some back posts!) and I identify as a lesbian. I'm really involved in the queer movement and wrote an undergraduate thesis last semester on the effects of heterosexim, homophobia, and the stigmatization of homosexuality on the self-esteem of queer youth in the school environment, which is just one of the many ways I'm very involved.
I know that sexual orientation is in City Year's non-discrimination statement, but I've experienced enough homophobia in my life from seemingly accepting institutions and organizations to be skeptical about everything I run accross.
Is City Year very accepting of sexual minorities? In my application would it be wise for me to talk at length about my involvement with the issue, as it's one of the many important issues I have been involved in?
I'm from near Seattle so if anything I know that Seattle is a very queer-friendly city.
Any/all feedback is welcome.
Thanks.
Sarah

I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I've been lurking around here for a while, I didn't want to join until I was accepted to CYNH (made that mistake with Teach for America, very depressing). But I got the call yesterday and I'm going to New Hampshire!
Anyway, I'll probably continue lurking around some more because I'm pretty nervous and excited and still a little busy with school and work.
So hello! *waves*

Allo. I graduate from A*NCCC in July.
I'm thinking of either doing another year of NCCC or going to Taos, New Mexico for their Cityear program. I would really love to go to NM again, but I can't seem to find a straight answer on housing so I can see what to expect financially.
Is it generally easy to find roommates that are also doing CityYear? Does cityYear offer any housing ideas or do I need to research apartments and things? If anyone here has done Taos, NM, can you tell me how much it would be to live there or if finding housing is difficult?
Thanks!

9:07 pm - Some questions!

I have my second interview for CY San Antonio next Thursday. Thank goodness I found this community to ask some questions! What should I expect? What things should I prepare for and how can I stand out from everyone else? I read a more recent post about being a college educated white female and that's what I am. I have some volunteer and leadership background, but nothing too stellar. I've always been afraid that I'm too ordinary for the program, and the city. Should I be worried?

2:22 am - questions!

I'm really considering doing City Year Chicago, but I have a few questions for people who have done it in Chicago or anywhere.
I know the city fairly well, and I'm pretty sure I could find a friend to live with. buuut, where are most of the projects located? Do you meet at the office or somewhere else before the projects?
Has anyone worked on the weekends? I currently love my job (at a children's museum) and the thought of not working there at all kind of pains me, but it's exhausting. I usually work 9 hour days and about 38 hrs/week. How long are volunteer days? Were you exhausted by the time the weekend came?
I've already taken a year off of school since I graduated HS a year early. Do you think colleges frown upon taking another year off if it's to do something like this? The schools I'm looking at are usually catagorized as "unconventional" and it seems they would like things like City Year, but I just want other opinions.
Overall, how did you like the experience?
sorry for all the questions, and thanks!

Hi, everyone. I got into CYDC about a week ago, and I'm really excited, but have some concerns, mostly about money. I know people probably ask this a lot, but is it hard to live on the stipend? DC is an expensive place to live, and I don't see how I could be able to live on less than $200 a week, with housing and all of that. I'm from North Carolina, so it's not as though I could live at home, so I'm just really concerned with money for housing. I guess I kind of want a specific percentage of what CY members typically spend their money on, because I am afraid I'm going to have to spend all of my stipend on housing. Anything to ease my worries about money would be really appreciated.
Happy Holidays, and thanks in advance!

I guess this questions are primarily directed at CY Boston folks...
I got something in the mail that says registration is on Aug. 23rd (8:30am-1pm)... Does this mean I can show up anytime between 8:30am and 1pm or that I should shown up at 8:30am and expect to stay until 1pm?

1:17 pm - Community Service Faire
|

Hullo, all! I'm Kirby, and I've been in the Young Hero/City Hero program at San Jose/Silicon Valley for quite a while now, and I've an idea.
I've got the Hero's Itch: my conscience is all inflamed, and if I don't go out and save the world soon the infection'll spread to my Guilt Gland. Shall have to get to work on that Community Service Faire idea, because it's something worth doing, and'll sooth the itch somewhat.
Anyone else feeling itchy and want to help? I'm looking especially for high-school aged people who are interested in community service but don't know where to start. The idea is to put together a Faire, much like a Career or College Faire, with a bunch of representatives from different organizations looking for teen volunteers. I'd like to have the Faire at a couple local high schools, possibly at a couple of the local community colleges, and maybe one or two other venues. A lot of putting it together will involve calling schools and the service organizations-- mostly, we'll be organizing the whole thing. If you're interested, email me at howlsoftly@gmail.com or message me on AIM at howlsoftly!
(By "local," I mean the Bay Area/Silicon Valley sort of region, though if someone wants to implement the idea somewhere else, we should definitely coordinate, and see about forming an Organization with a Name and Such.)
