Making DXP plans

I am currently sitting at work and chafing at the bit, envying those of our particular brand of crazy that managed to get off today. My fault - I didn't think until two weeks ago "Hey, maybe I should request Friday off", only to discover six members of my team had already put requests in for this weekend. They are all Batman geeks, so it's no surprise that every five seconds I'm muttering DAMN YOU DARK KNIGHT!

Anyway. I need to find some LJ teams for the weekend. Anyone got stuff in the work that has room for a player to join?

Scraping the bottom of the barrel

Gee and the way people talk you would be thinking World of Warcraft didn't need to start copying other games to remain fresh

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/features/gameplay/achievements.xml

hile Wrath of the Lich King will improve many of World of Warcraft's existing features, it will also introduce plenty of brand-new ones to keep the game fresh and interesting. One of these new features is sure to suit a wide range of play styles: achievements. These self-contained goals will offer new challenges, satisfy goal-oriented players, allow others to see your accomplishments in World of Warcraft -- and are just plain fun.

Sorry, but does this sound like Badges, Accolades and Veterans Rewards to me? I am sure the community will be energized by suddenly introducing this stuff.

-shakes head-

Anyone plan to be running on Guardian Blue in the high 30s this weekend? My goal is to get Foudre Bleue to 40 from 37 and I could certainly get there faster on a team. I plan to be on tonight and Sunday afternoon (crosses fingers).

They nerfed *Brawl*???

Okay, this one kinda takes the cake. Reading the notes on the latest patch I read the following gem:

• Brawl - Animation time corrected. Old cast time was 0.67 seconds, and the new cast time is 0.83 seconds.

Because, as we all know, Brawl is way overpowered and gets abused so much.

I mean seriously. W.T.F?

Linkage below:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=11356113&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

They better not double debt too because I my main hero (Level 33 mutation energy blaster) has 35000 in debt to clear!

It was a bad game session, really really bad. I'm steering clear of Bricks until I'm at least at level 35. My aim is to push over the 40 mark this weekend.

Speeding up ITF

In part because playing too much hurts my hands, I like TFs to go quickly, even if taking a more deliberate approach would mean more XP. So any suggestions on how to speed up the ITF?

1) In the first mish, is there a route that tends to get you all the hostages and avoids requiring a lot fo doubling back? For example, does always taking the lefthand turn (except for the one that leads to the Oracle) help with that?

2) In the second mish, do the crystals regenerate? If not, I'm thinking one thing to do is to clear all the mobs around the crystals, knock them low on health, and then have people simultaneously take them out and avoid the ambushes. At the very least, is there a specific room that tends to reliably have three crystals, so that at least those three ambushes can be skipped if you save its crystals for the end?

3) How do you avoid dealing with the ambushes? If after taking out a general, the whole team bugs out (runs away back to the mish entrance), and then gets reassembled near the next general, would that work?

City of Nieces

My six year old niece has been visiting for the past week. She's been a bundle of non-stop energy and it's been a blast. But I want to tell a quick game-related story that I think you'll all find adorable.

Yesterday, I was on my computer and she saw the background image I have on it...a drawn picture of Doug by </a></b></a>tarq. Of course, being a curious six year old, she pointed at it and said "What's that?" So, I explain the game of City of Heroes (as basic as I can for a six year old) and Doug. I leave out the origin of the superdrug that he was forced to take that turned him into this, and stuck with what everyone knows and loves about Doug: he's big, he's silly, he smells and talks funny. I told her a couple of classic Doug stories (like the "This am look like job for..." SuperDoug transformation and the "Doug is here. Hamidon is screwed, now!" and most especially his epic battle with </a></b></a>syrusb's villain, Lord Volf Alteron) and suddenly, she's turned into Doug's biggest fan.

So, I go into the game and show her Doug running and jumping around. I beat up a couple of bad guys, answering her questions about the game, etc. Well, after that, she wanted to make her own character!

And...we did!

Somewhat x-posted with my own journal (though more detailed and more pictures are there).

A dual blades (a pair of sais) and Willpower scrapper. And to be honest, I didn't even design her! My niece did all the decision making. She knew EXACTLY how Sarah Saviour was going to look.

She played the game a little bit and liked beating up the bad guys. I apologize to her mother in advance if her daughter becomes addicted to the game. I should mention, though, that the look of the character was all Victoria's idea. We started with the schoolgirl look while I scrolled through the easy pre-made costumes and tweaked the costume from there. So, I might have done the clicking, but she did the designing! So, I finished up the look and then told Victoria we had to name the character. First, she wanted to go with Violet and I said "Well, we have to give her a nickname. How about Violent Violet because she's a fighter?" Unfortunately, that name was already taken. So, I asked if she wanted to try another name. She said "Sarah!", so I said "How about Sarah Saviour?" and explained what a saviour was.

The whole day that we were out (Mom, me and my niece), she wouldn't stop either talking about Doug, asking for more stories (and laughing a lot at each one, like when Doug sticks his stinky feet in people's face or the butt squiggle).

So, of course, when Mom was taking some pictures, Victoria told me to be silly like Doug. Thus...

Just thinking ...

Was musing about Safeguard missions the other day, for no particular reason.

And it occurred to me that -- this is from the Department of "Wouldn't It Be Awesome If ...?" -- heroside powers could work on destructible items just like villain powers do in mayhems, BUT you'd lose time for them instead of gaining bonus time.

So you lob a fireball (picking an example purely at random!) at a foe and the AoE damage takes out a few objects. Up comes the message PENALTY TIME and then NEWSSTANDS -1:00, or whatever.

But also have there be a badge ... the Property Damage badge, maybe. So if you wanted the badge, you'd have to destroy stuff ... but the more stuff you destroy, the less time you have ...

I don't know, I just think it'd be fun. But then, I'm skewed that way :)

Kinda disappointed that I won't get to play much during double XP weekend, but Friday night I am definitly going to try and wrangle as much XP and Inf as possible.

Hopefully I will be doing the Lady Grey TF and am looking for teammates to help with it.
So anyone who is around lv 45 on Triumph want to help out and do the Lady Grey TF??

Oh and if anyone has any advice about the TF that would be cool (never ran this one before so I really don't know what to expect)

I will be playing Super Goblin, lv 46 Magic Tanker SS/Will on Triumph. I will try to get the TF started around 7pm central time, but will have to see how many people I can wrangle up.

Mission Maker

When they revealed the idea of a Mission Maker I was, at first, a little hesitant to get excited. After all, there were some things that we wanted in the past that, once implemented, weren't at all what we'd imagined. Sometimes the Devs surpass our expectations, but sometimes they fall flat. (Though I will say that they're wonderful about listening to feedback. Paragon Dance Party was pretty bad, but Pocket D is pretty cool, IMHO.)

So anyway, I could see the Mission Maker being pretty tame. It would go something like this:

Pick your foe group
Pick your map
Pick your objective (steal object, defeat all, defeat boss and guards, rescue/kidnap, etc)
Done.

Now don't get me wrong, I'd still use the feature. I run radio/paper missions almost exclusively now because I get to pick my objective and my foe group, and I can stay in the zone. But if that's all the Mission Maker turns out to be, how disappointing would that be?

Of course, it could go crazy over to the other end of the spectrum, and we might get the same kind of map-maker that we have in SG base edit mode. I think that would be pretty insane.. but maybe they'd let us do that?

A couple people have mentioned designing a mission with wall to wall white-con minions or something. That's crossed my mind too.. though what I'd really like to set up is a mission similar to the "practice" mode in Dynasty Warriors. In that game, the mode didn't count towards your character's level, however - you could just stand there forever and endless waves of foes would come at you, and you could just keep fighting until you couldn't anymore. At first I thought this would be "unbalanced" but after some thought, it really wouldn't be. They're obviously not going to let us adjust how much XP you earn for any given task, so if you really can stand there and fight wave after wave after wave of foes... *shrug* the only advantage is that you wouldn't have travel time between missions.

I can see a lot of ways to abuse the Mission Maker though - people putting a glowie right at the front door that you can click and mish complete? So I'm sure there will be some safeguard against that.

But.. and endless spawn mission would work, right?

CoH and CoV merging.

Warcry article

Speculations about this range from an upcoming New Expansion (possibly easier to debug Have New Expansion vs. No New Expansion than Have New Expansion And CoV Only vs. Have New Expansion And CoH Only etc), Bases For Everybody, and the inevitable Side-Switching suggestion.

City of Heroes and City of Villains joining forces? Well, this is true at least as far as content goes. Players of either CoH/CoV will have access to all content. Check out the press release by clicking below.

NCsoft readies the number 1 super-powered MMO for more

Wednesday 16th July, Brighton, UK/... There is a reason for the rejoicing in Paragon City™ and the Rogue Isles™. It is official - NCsoft® has completely merged the two games into one game universe. All current subscribers who only had one of the games (City of Heroes® or City of Villains®) now have access to the features of both games. Additionally, all City of Heroes and City of Villains games for sale at retail or online will grant access to both games.

This is the final step needed in preparing the IP for future projects, to be announced later this year. Paragon City and the Rogue Isles have always been a part of the same game universe. When City of Villains launched in 2005 as a stand-alone game, it did not launch with an extra subscription fee, so there has always been this feeling that they are closely related. What's different here is that NCsoft has taken down the barrier where players had to have a City of Villains serial code to make a villain, and vice versa. Now, it doesn't matter if you bought Heroes or Villains, you can make characters from either faction you want and experience their unique game content. Additionally, Heroes now have access to base building, which was previously only available if you had purchased City of Villains.

"In setting the stage for our upcoming plans for the IP, we felt the time was right to truly consolidate the City of Heroes and City of Villains universe," said Brian Clayton, General Manager and Executive Producer. "We have removed all restrictions that were created when City of Villains launched in order to make way for some really cool content and features we have in the pipeline. This is an evolution of the IP that lays the foundation for what's to come."

The most recent game update, Issue 12: Midnight Hour, launched in May and included a wealth of features, including a new Greek and Roman inspired zone, Villain Epic Archetypes, Powerset Proliferation, as well as more character slots so that players can try out the new character powers and Archetypes.

"We know that character variety is one of our greatest strengths and that's why our players love to create new characters" said Matt Miller, Lead Designer. "Even former players who reactivate will be pleasantly surprised to see new open character slots waiting for them."

Uniting the City of Heroes universe enables the development team to focus on other features slated to come in future installments. Improvements to Supergroup Bases and raids, an offline character reward system, and the previously revealed Mission Maker are just some of the systems that will see the benefits of a unified City of Heroes game.

The last paragraph has garnered some attention.

Lowbies for 2xXP?

I know Double XP Weekend is a great time to run all your high level characters... but I want to run my lowbies as well. Not sure if I've mentioned it here in the community (though I know I've mentioned it in my personal journal), I am trying to get all of my toons to at least level 10 by the end of the year. (As well as get three toons to 50.) Creating seven new alts on Saturday didn't really help... but I still think I can reach my goals.

So, does anyone plan on doing level <10 content on any of the following servers?

Blueside: Infinity, Victory, Champion, Freedom, Justice, Virtue, Pinnacle

Redside: Liberty, Virtue, Victory, Freedom, Infinity

If you're planning on doing low level content, I'd like to try to be online at the same time and get a small team going. Since I am only trying to get each of these guys to level 10, I am not asking for much time. (The toons range in level from 1 to 8.)

Thanks in advance! :) [Edit: My Characters]

Hello (intro post)

Hi Everyone,

I just recently was introduced to City of Heroes 2 months ago, and I'm addicted. I play it all the time, throughout the night sometimes. I have one character so far (on CoH), I haven't had the urge to make any new ones yet. I have a level 31 blaster...who never seems to kill anything. His attacks keep missing things, and it seems that I have to be on a team in order to deal any damage. Since I'm still pretty new to the game and don't totally understand everything yet, would it be ok if I fill his enhancements up with ones that are for a higher level? Right now they are really outdated, I'm not sure why I didn't do something about that earlier.

I'm really excited for double experience weekend. I am still learning as I go and would like to make some friends as well, it's a really great game!! I have seen lots of characters that look like superheroes...like an Iron Man clone, a Spidergirl clone, etc.

Thanks for reading !

Uh Oh... looks like we are gonna have some competition.

And it is coming from the big boys...

http://ve3d.ign.com/videos/play/32938/PC/DC-Universe-Online

DC Universe Online.

Has anyone heard about this game? From the trailer it looks pretty good (if a bit cartoony) and will have interactive objects like cars, streetsigns and more. Of course what is in the trailer and what is in the game itself might be two entirely different things.

Edit: Well I guess we won't have to worry for a while, it says it's release date is 12/31/09. And knowing Sony... it will be delayed.

I created a CoH and CoV News Feed as syndications. They are:

http://syndicated.livejournal.com/coh_newsfeed/

and

http://syndicated.livejournal.com/cov_newsfeed/

Just in case anyone wanted them. I personally still like

http://syndicated.livejournal.com/coh_devtracker/

for most of my updates and news, but official stuff is nice too.

Enjoy.
