Featured Hero #43
Name: Rapport
Origin: Mutation
Archetype: Controller
Primary: Gravity Control
Secondary: Force Field
Server: Infinity
After a heavy night of partying at the Pocket D, Kyle McNamee stumbled through the streets of Kings Row to his studio apartment. All was well and good until a small group of Skuls saw him as easy prey and advanced upon him. A quick pistol whip to the back of Kyle’s head triggered his unknown dormant powers of gravity control, force field generation and later, telepathic assault. After fleeing for his life inside of a personal force bubble, he later returned to the crime scene as his new costumed alter ego: Rapport.

Soloed Positron TF! YAY!

I am a 42 mo veteran and had heard of people soloing tfs, particularly Positron since it doesn't have an AV.. and I decided to try it myself, as a challenge. I enlisted Sofacat, my 44 db/wp scrapper and did it over a period of 3 days. It was painful at times, esp in the horrible Rollister mish (yuck!) and also when I almost finished the second last mish (a densely packed defeat all) and my pc BSODed thanks to Vista. So then I had to re-do the entire mish which was super frustrating :P Anyway, I am glad I persevered and succeeded :-)

Traps Defender?

Okay, I was absent for awhile, I didn't even know Traps became a Defender primary. I've had a Traps mastermind, and enjoyed the set for support, but how the heck do you play it as a primary?

I'd love to hear your experiences, because I have a few concepts (Traps/Ice), I'd like to know if I'd be actually helpful to a team, or if it'd be a joke to try.

Overdue 60-month Veteran Award

Do the veteran's awards only get handed out on regular business days?  I was due to get my 60-month on the 19th, which was Saturday.  I suppose if I don't log in and receive it tomorrow (Monday), I'll contact support.

Winter Event on Virtue!

Greetings, heroes!

Tomorrow night starting at 8pm EDT/5pm PDT the crew of the Galactic Pelican will be on a Winter Event spree in Atlas Park, starting with the usual Present-clicking, frosties-clearing to summon a Winter Lord. We welcome and encourage any of you who would like to join us, as we'll go through the zone event at least twice.

We usually run a full team, but for Monday night we'll split up and host multiple teams so everyone gets their chance for the rewards.

We begin gathering at about 7:50pm EDT. Meet us behind City Hall starting close to 8pm if you want to be included on the hunt. If you show up late, I will be on either Subliminal Zeus or Sunwind Striker, so send me a tell and I'll get you on a team.

See you there tomorrow night, and The Lord Winter won't know what hit him!

Faster, Must Go Faster

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to share for getting a gold-medal time on the Winter Event ice-chute toboggan run thing in Pocket D?  Does it just come down to having Super Speed or getting a Speed Boost and having the luck to not skid off the chute at any point while cornering?  Picking up again from last year's practice, I've been able to get my time down to around 54 seconds, but cutting the last few seconds to get the time down to under 50 is just killing me.  Just wondering if there's something "obvious" that I'm missing as a way of imparting some momentum down through my character's feet to keep him/her firmly on the track.

EM Pulse?

I rolled two Radiation Emission characters, one Rad/Ice Defender and a Grav/Rad controller, which I enjoy very much so far (I have a thing for Rad, rolled several Radiation Blast toons before).

The Controller just hit lvl 12, but my Defender is lvl 30 now and I need some advice for Em Pulse. I'm not sure if I should take it, it's special against Robos what is nice for sure, but I doubt I'll fight many Robos.

The Controller is running with an Cold/Rad Defender, the Defender with an Ele/Ele scrapper.

So my question is: does it any good besides being uber against Robos? Is it worth to take, just nice to have or a must-have?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

City of Hypothesis: Dream powerset combo

I follow this comm pretty closely, but I don't read the live forums. This seems like the kind of topic to get brought up on the boards, but instead of just hearing a bunch of wailing, I'd rather read the more sophisticated speculation of, well, you guys.

We've seen powerset proliferation, and we've played with non-standard NPCs in MA, but I want to know: If you could make a character with any powersets for your primary/secondary, what would you pick? And more curiously, do you think it would completely hose the game balance, or turn out to be unplayable?

Personally, I'd love to make a Martial Arts/Energy Blast character and be the king of knockback. But completely abandoning a secondary pool would leave me squishy and vulnerable, perhaps debilitatingly so.

(In a more realistic world, I wouldn't mind seeing some Scrapper primaries adapted to fit the Blaster secondary motif)

SG mates

Is it just me or do your SG mates feel like,... more like real friends and family than a lot of your real life people you know? Or am I playing to much?

Hi! Just as a fyi, I changed one of my globals from @also crantz to @oxomoco, so if you see that asking stupid questions, the response isn't 'stupid n00b', it's 'stupid crantz'*

Off to find the global name post.

*I will cry if you say this.

Need a new SG/VG

Hey guys..
I won't get into the long boring detail of my RL friends leaving the game and leaving me all alone... but now I'm look for a new SG(s).
I've been playing since a few months after the game launched and am very good with support type characters, decent with tanks/scrappers.
Most of my toons are on Triumph right now, but in the last 6 months I've made a couple on Freedom and want to continue with those toons as well.
My play times are erratic and it's difficult for me to schedule time aside right now for things like TF's due to my work and school schedule. I'd like to join SG's that are fairly active and are constantly looking within their own SG first for teammates.

I do have a couple villains, yet haven't played much of it in the last year or so due to my RL friends just wanting to play heroes.
I have 1 lvl 50 villain on Triumph... but am more interested in getting into villains on Freedom. So if u have a good VG group on that server, I may be willing to join with my lowbies.

global: @bothsides

Thanks!

Villains Leave Paragon City... For Africa?

So I was in Kenya for work purposes. Long story, and that's beside the point anyway. The point is, maybe I'd been away from the game a bit too long, because in the middle of one of the marketplaces, I make a sinister discovery...

Some archvillain's got a lot of 'splainin to do... )

Speaking of cons and such, anybody who makes it to southron cons should let me know so I can look for you!

Dark/Dark Tanks

Hey guys.

I've read through the community (and forums and blog postings and paragon wiki) and am having some measure of difficulty wrapping my head around the dark/dark tank.

Mostly because, well, he bleeds a lot.

I mean bunches.

And even slotted with two or three end redux per power, he chows on CABs and TABs like crack.

Is dark/dark just not effective for tanking? Or does he have to tank in a completely different way? Because so far the tanking method seems to be "taunt the baddies, then pound my face against their fists."

Granted, he's only L17 and I know with each AT/powerset there's that sweet spot where you look around and realize that hey, this toon is FUN. But holy buckets, I've never even racked up this much debt this soon, even on my defender.

So, wise community, I ask you: Dark/Dark Tank: "Just never gonna be awesome" or "keep your chin up, 4-slot stamina and don't lead with my left?"

City in "windowed" mode at full resolution (no border, no titlebar, no taskbar).

So, I recently upgraded my PC from Windows XP to Windows 7, and I've been quite happy with it... with one exception. Due to changes in the way that "always on top" works in 7 (and Vista before it), HeroStats and other overlay windows cannot be placed on top of COH in fullscreen mode. The author of HeroStats has confirmed that there's nothing he can do about it, and the only workaround is to run COH in "windowed" mode -- which means losing screen space to the title bar (and the taskbar, unless you autohide it, and even then it can pop up when you don't want it to).

However, thanks to a freeware utility called AutoHotkey, I've discovered a workaround. I've compiled a small script and made it available for download at http://tinyurl.com/cohwindowhelper (source is at http://tinyurl.com/cohwindowhelperscript, if you feel like tinkering further). When you run this file, it will start up a background process (which only uses about 2 MB of memory), which in turn will set up the following hotkeys:

WindowsKey + ]
Sets the Windows Taskbar to auto-hide, and hides the COH window's title bar (if COH is running).

WindowsKey + [
Sets the Windows Taskbar to always visible, and unhides the COH window's title bar (if COH is running).

(NOTE: Be sure to maximize your COH window first. If you don't, there isn't much point. :)

As an unintended (but entirely welcome, to me) side effect, this also causes the auto-hide taskbar to NOT appear when the mouse is placed at the edge of the screen and the COH window is active. Yay, no accidental taskbar clicks while playing! (You can easily get the taskbar back by pressing the Windows Key, and auto-hide will still work while any non-COH window is active.)

Put the EXE file in your startup folder, hit the hotkey when you're at the login screen (doing it while in-game will cause the in-game windows to shift around), and enjoy the use of every bit of screen real estate.

(The program icon is one of Liz's, and is used with permission.)

DISCLAIMER: This is something I slapped together this evening, with a tool I'd never used previously -- there may be quirks. I have no idea how well this will work in a dual-monitor setup, or really any configuration other than the one I have. But, hey, it's free. :)

As a matter of fact, I just found one quirk. Once in a while, if I tab (or Windows key) out of the game, do some stuff in other windows, and go back, my overlay window (HeroStats) will get pushed behind the COH window until I manually select it from the taskbar again. Pretty minor, though -- it doesn't happen all that often (never when I'm just playing the game), and it's quick to fix.

Someday, you'll be able to say "I remember..." (EDIT: or not.)

"...when drawn-weapon sets were kind of a pain in the butt."

From BABs, on the official forums:

Good news everyone, I think I have figured out a way to bypass weapon redraw in combat. I've tested it with with various non-weapon powers or weapon powers from completely different sets, and it seems to work out. This means that you will be able to use any power in a chain with a weapon power, and not have to redraw the weapon...even completely different weapon powers. It will just instantly appear in your hand and play the attack animation. If you're not in combat, out of range, or have no target selected...then it will play a non-rooted, interruptible version of the weapon draw animations.

Some minor issues with consistently playing a weapon draw animation outside of combat, or the weapon draw animation playing when it really does need to...but that shouldn't interfere with combat.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to get to every powerset at once, but I was able to get the following powersets done.

* Broadsword
* Claws
* Dual Blades
* Archery
* Battleaxe
* War Mace
* Trick Arrow
* Thugs Mastermind Dual Pistols
* Robotics Mastermind Pulse Rifle
* Arachnos Widows
* Arachnos Soldiers
* Patron "mace" powers
* Munitions Ancillary Pool

The rest will have to wait until sometime after GR:

Visually, this may take some getting used to, but I think my new /TA controller just got even more enjoyable.

---

EDIT: It was too good to last. The change has been cancelled. BABs again:
Head's up, I've had to retract my previous statement. I've run into a complete roadblock related to shields and weapons that makes this method I was using un-workable. So it's back to the drawing board with the whole thing.

They're testing PREVIEWING the Winter event on the live servers right now. No link, because it still has 'publishing live build' on the forum instead of patch notes for today.

Here's the link.

Whats the closest you could come to beating CoH?

http://www.onrpg.com/MMO/World-of-Warcraft/news/World-of-Warcraft-Taiwanese-player-beats-WoW

this post made me wonder what all it would take to "beat" CoH...in the same sence of the word.
I wonder, across all servers, who is the closest to obtaining all actual obtainable badges? (not counting the 1-5 year anniversary badges and the badges for account time)
What count would you all give for the total number of badges that ANYONE could get?
I guess we might would have to count even badges....and with that probably 6 to 12 months of play time.
anyhow, this is a cool feat reguardless the game. grats to the taiwan guy!
