So I'm grumbling because I'm not seeing Twitters on my phone (well, aside from the people I've turned off because I don't care if you're poopin'). Realize it's been a quiet text day in general. Whatever, I'm enjoying it. Got Monday off so I can see Devin/Val-chan for more than a few hours tomorrow, so go to text the red-hawked passenger--

You cannot send messages when your phone is turned off. Would you like to turn it on now?

...oh.

For those who don't know Brother Metal, the Capuchin monk who sings with a heavy metal band, you should take a look at this article about the band putting out their second album. This guy...I like this guy. This man is proof that you can be a devout Christian, secure in your faith and dedicated to it, and still not be an annoying religious type, the kind that cannot do anything without shoe-horning Jesus into it, or whining at people who don't agree with you.

I respect him, and would venture to say that I'm inspired by him...and he rocks.

No words...just no words! [Jul. 18th, 2008|12:08 pm]

From here:
AC: I don't know about appropriate, but it does seem like the right costume for the character. She should be in black... it's in her name. And leather is very tough... it saved my brother's skin (literally) when he laid his motorcycle down at about 80 mph (He doesn't do that anymore. He's a very good Dad now.). If she's gonna have baddies coming at her with knives and swords etc... the leather isn't armor, but it's damn tough, and it's easier to deliver some good kicks if it's a body suit and not pants.
Was your brother wearing fishnets "when he laid his motorcycle down at about 80 mph?" I doubt it. So if leather is such a great thing to wear in a fight...and I agree that it probably is for hand-to-hand combat...then why is a third of Black Canary's body exposed?

You want to say "some girls just like fishnets," fine. You wants to make the same, stupid crack about guys staring at her legs, fine. But then don't go on about how from personal experience you know how wise it is to have a heftier material between one's skin and the elements. That's just...AURGH!

AURGH!

I've tried to just ignore this, because frankly I think that Barbie Canary looks more like Lord Fanny than Dinah Lance. But when someone goes on about how great a thicker material is for a fight and then all but says, "Except for her legs, because how else are the villains supposed to tranq., cut, stab, or claw her in a fight," my inner geek won't be quelled.

The only Black Canary figure I'll ever own is the one with the Butch Guice costume. That thing had everything: full-body protection, no fuck-me heels, utility belt, and pockets.

Doctor Developer: I like the fishnets, but she's wrong about, ah, how her legs, um, "offer a great distraction ... before delivering a round-house kick to the head." Why would you get close enough for her to deliver a kick when you can, as you say, hit her with a dart from across the street.

They didn't mentioned Empowered by name, but I still thought it was crucially kewl that it showed up.

Yes, I know you are excited about the new Batman movie, but take a few minutes and enjoy the Friday Pix...it costs less than a movie ticket or a gallon of gas, and will probably give you more laughs.

Original Character Altitis [Jul. 18th, 2008|11:42 pm]

dkellis

It requires a bit of discipline, or at least a healthy amount of guilt, in order to stick to even the vaguest schedule for blogging. Best-laid plans and all that, however, expecially when one is laid low by Real Life and illness, thus reducing the available time for Deep Thoughts about anime. I could regurgitate yet another Nanoha GamerS comic, or a quick one-liner with regards to some new facet of the Summer Season in the 2008th Year of our Lord and Saviour Sephiroth the Pretty, but that feels a bit like cheating. So I’ll shift one square to something in the general proximity of anime in general, even if it is not exactly blogging about anime as much as blogging about stuff related to anime.

In this case, anime fanfiction. Yes, again.

I’m still working on several pieces of fanfiction at the same time, in an astonishing display of multitasking that probably would be more impressive if it weren’t about sock-puppeting fictional characters owned by other people into some semblance of plot and drama. One of these stories is, as has been mentioned before (and which I am too lazy to link to), something set in the universe, nay, multiverse of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, post-season three. I have a large and unfeasibly detailed timeline of events which spans one thousand and five hundred years, albeit clustered with specific dates in the periods where the stories actually take place. The cast stretches to, if not thousands, then at least Far Too Many to be comfortably introduced without the reader feeling like they’ve stumbled onto a Baby Picture conversation. (You know the type.)

This is considered par for the ficwriting course for me. What struck me hard enough to trigger a seed of blog post inspiration, and this is not very hard at all, was the assertion that since I have so many original characters, this was no longer a work of fanfiction, but original fiction instead.

I can, with some effort, understand the claim: after all, for the most part, fanfic readers wish to read about the canon characters, rather than the diseased creations of an amateur author’s fevered imagination. What they want the canon characters to do is best left for another discussion, especially since I’m trying to keep this blog at least somewhat family-friendly. The gist is that since the canon characters take something of a backseat to the action in the fanfic, it is no longer worthy of that “fanfic” label. What it is to be called now is anyone’s guess.

And yet, I cannot quite tell the story I wish to tell without both using the world of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, as well as relegating the canon characters to the sidelines, at the same time. This is not for lack of trying, but just that the story requires several character types who do not appear in a major capacity in the canon. In fact, the only one who qualifies is Yuuno, who was carefully set aside to the relegation bench from a large part of StrikerS, possibly due to possession of a Y chromosome.

The Nanoha-verse is large, varied, intriguing, and almost criminally unexplored. There is a great deal of background information in the setting that we simply Do Not Know, a limitation which apparently Seven Arcs share as well, considering how bizarre some of their explanations have been. (How many moons are there over Midchilda?) And the large majority of the canon character show absolutely no sign of interest in exploring these mysteries, preferring instead to blow things up. I have created my original characters almost by necessity, for lack of anyone else to act as the Watson to Yuuno’s Sherlock.

If anyone else has any better idea on how to proceed, I’m certainly open to suggestions. Or, to be honest, I will be once I get over this accursed virus.

Why AlGore needs to learn more about what he preaches [Jul. 18th, 2008|04:18 am]

lordremo
Or " When did the Nobel Prize have a Special Olympics cataGOREy?"

This article has had it's day in the sun, being compared to Kennedy and his "race to the Moon" speech. Hmmm... lot of that going around, too.

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080717/D91VH6B00.html

Here are some things for you to ponder, as he has not.

* We do not use Oil to generate electricity. We use coal, hydroelectric and nuclear sources. It won't help our need to reduce petro fuel consumption doing this. Even if his idea was to switch all cars to electric you'll never see a semi truck powered by batteries.

* Solar power has a very limited capability for power sources.
A. Nevada is one of a handful of states that get enough sun to provide large amounts of power. Cloudy days mean 30% output... maybe.

B. His "every 40 minutes" idea requires a solar farm the size of the Grand Canyon

C. You can't build a grid to move that energy from here to states like Arkansas, let alone New York.

D. It doesn't work the night shift.

E. Even if you could afford to retrofit yours and every other house in the country you can't independantly power the place that way. The battery and capacitor waste disposal would be worse than nuclear waste.

* Wind power has even less effectiveness since the wind can blow from different directions... or not at all. Home use is GREATLY restricted in cities (my friend has been trying for 2 years without hope) as they are dangerous and considered a bigger eyesore than a satellite dish. The term "landscape depreciation" was created to explain what happens to land values where these monstrosities can be seen. Ted Kennedy himself kept them off the coast of the Kennedy compound because it would spoil the view. The damage to bird species that get "chopped up" by the blades is well documented. And since nearly all the turbines in them come from Europe, how does that make us independant?

* Geothermal? Something that can ONLY be made in places geologically capable. Considering all those are on protected government lands & parks, like Yellowstone... I don't see them disturbing the precious flora, fauna and lands for that any more than for oil drilling.

* Even where these power sources can be generated you can't move the power to where it can't. And all these efforts would take decades involving development, restructuing the national powergrid and implementation.

Gore and the other cronies keep dancing away from the point that NUCLEAR power is the only proven, faster, safer, less polluting and long term solution. But Congress is ready to put you into DEEPER dispare:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/07/17/america/pelosi.php

They know damn well their complaints on leases is just a straw dog.

A. Oil companies have to lease land from the gov. to explore it for oil possibilities.
B. After getting the lease they must pick specific areas there to obtain permits from the Dept. of Interior to perform exploritory digs. Congress uses leverage to slow these permits to a crawl, drawing more money in the process.
C. Where no oil is determined to be, you CAN"T produce oil so those leases show no activity.
D. When they DO find oil (like the Shale deposits in the Dakotas or Wyoming) democrats in Congress or the states pass laws preventing the oil from being recovered.

I've yet to hear one person defend how producing more oil from here (safe from enviromental or middle east turmoil) or onto the world market doesn't lower barrel costs, or boosts our economy with the jobs and investment.

This has been a democratic plan for decades and it is paying off for them.

Might I propose you watch a certain something cooked up by a bored Joss Whedon. It has superheroes (played by Malcolm Reynolds) and supervillains (played by Doogie Howser). And musical numbers. Yes, it's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog!

Timing is important. On Saturday, the third and final episode will be released on the web. By Monday, all three episodes will be removed, never to be made free again (although they will be released again in other purchasable formats). So take 40 minutes out of your day and enjoy, you won't regret it.
