I have been attempting to write a circle fic, set after the Circle Opens Quartet ends, but I am having some trouble. I've made a start but I don't really know where I want to go with it, or whether I should just abandon it and just use it as a writing exercise.

I've currently written 2,562 words and would really appreciate it if anyone would have a look and tell me what they think. I feel that some of the character voices are a bit off and having just looked over it I'm conserned about the use of language compared to how it is in the book.

Basically I don't have any real focus and need help. Also because of this I can't promise to update.

The Emelan fandom being as small as it is, there's a noticable lack of variety in the characters and pairings that dominate fic archives. Here's your chance to rectify that, and challenge yourself to try writing something you've never written before.

After inell's example, I present the Locked Room Challenge:

1. Comment here with any variation of ‘I’ll play’ along with one character you refuse to write/draw.


2. I will choose two characters (three if you’re feeling frisky!) from a hat my spiffy JavaScript randomizer and give them to you.


3. You will write a drabble/ficlet (100 words or more) or draw art with those two characters locked in a room. It can be any room of your choosing and the circumstances are entirely in your hands.


4. It can be any rating, genre, het/slash/femmeslash/gen, and just has to be 100 words or more.


5. You will post the drabble/ficlet or art to your LJ/this community, and then comment back at this post with a link, title, pairing, and rating.


6. I will compile a masterlist of fic and art, and post it to this community. No deadline for claiming characters or posting fic, as I have comment alerts turned on.

lea_hazel @ 10:44am: Question About Future Challenges
So, the last few challenges and prompts have had almost no response, despite my giving a generous deadline and keeping the writing options as wide as possible, to account for people's favorite characters and etc. I'm wondering what I should do about that.

Would there be interest in a challenge where people are assigned or claim a writing prompt from a list, and so each writer has their own individual plot bunny to work with?

An example of this would be something like inell's Locked Room Challenge, which has proved inspirational to a great many writers. If this particular challenge isn't popular, we could try something where community viewers respond to a theme with suggestions of prompts, and then members claim a prompt to write/illustrate from the masterlist compiled. Or something else.

Help me out, here.

lea_hazel @ 8:45pm: Plug: Squicky Pairings for One and All!
For anyone who is interested, this spring the Dancing Dove is hosting the Emelan Vertical Keyboard Challenge, for unusual, creative or squicky Emelan-verse pairings. The challenge is also a contest. Volunteers will read all of the fics that are submitted, and award high scores for writing style, proper use of language, characterization and more. Winners will get bragging rights, and possibly prizes (prizes were offered for the winners of last year's Tortall Horizontal Keyboard Challenge, but never claimed).

More details about the pairings that qualify for the challenge can be found here. Signup for judges and official judging criteria can be found here. Check out sff_challenge for last year's entries and a better idea of the sort of fics are usually submitted. The SFF is a society at the Dancing Dove, dedicated to strange pairings and "revelling in the perversity of your own mind."

Challenge opens for entries on April 20th.

Within the Circle universe, many characters have chosen their own names. Others have had their names chosen by their parents. Every name is a choice, with any number of reasons behind it. Every reason is a potential story.

Your mission in responding to this challenge is to tell the story of how a name was chosen, and why, whether the name was chosen for the character in question or for another, a child or even a pet. Original characters are allowed and even encouraged; everyone has parents, even if we never see them in canon.

The deadline for submitting a response is May 8th. Leave a comment if you want an extension.
