I've posted another chapter of Practice Makes Perfect on the CI5Ops site. Party Time is an interlude with Backup, not really part of the main thing at all. Also it's proof that I should never try to write het fic, no matter how low the rating.

The revamp of the CI5 Ops site is now complete. We've done away with the frames, reorganised everything to make things easier to find, revamped the fiction and multimedia sections entirely. We've also added links to fansites and created a new 'community' area, which now includes links to the two livejournals we run - the CI5 Ops announcement journal and a CI5 drabble community. Livejournal (www.livejournal.com), for those who aren't aware of it, is a weblogging place where many of us hang out, post stray thoughts and stray fic snippets and, as Jen mentioned last week, they've recently done away with invite codes, so anyone can join and participate in these communities.
We've also added 5 new stories - two new stories by Melissa in the adult section, and new stories by Ariadne, Claire and Chya, and Rod in the slash section.
Enjoy! And if you find any broken links, I'd be grateful if you drop one of us a line (alyse @ ci5ops.co.uk or tasha @ ci5ops.co.uk).

We're now at 490 stories and 99 drabbles.
* Updated the Cat Tales series by Claire in the Slash fanfiction section
* Added a new story by Melissa to the general fanfiction section
* Added a new drabble by Melissa to general drabbles.
[ETA: I've also changed the settings of the community to make it open membership, so anyone who is watching the community but hasn't wanted to mail Tasha or I to join can now join without talking to us ::g::]

Just being the pain I normally am, a question came up reading the last entry. It's not so much one about the motivations why we choose a certain genre to write in, or read ...
It's more a general question born from - I admit - sheer curiosity: WHY DO PEOPLE WRITE AT ALL?
Mean I know why I spend my time in front of my PC, muttering and struggling with a foreign language. It's a sort of therapy. But what are the reasons for other (more active) writers?

Some of us have been talking in our own livejournals about this, so we thought we'd bring it to the community. Hurt/Comfort fiction - do we read and write it and if so, why?
So... what are the feelings about this? Do people like to read and write hurt comfort? If so - why? What do you take away from a hurt/comfort story as a reader? What pushes your buttons and why? What about writing in this genre? Same reasons or do you have different ones for exploring this kind of genre fic?
What makes a good hurt comfort story? Do you have any favourites you'd like to share? What makes them work? What don't you like to see? What do you think doesn't work?

I've been musing recently, partially triggered by both stories I've read in other fandoms and by a thread that started coincidentally on slash-writers when I was musing (gmta or something like that ::g::) about the endings of stories. I'm not talking about incomplete WIPs, I'm talking about actually supposedly finished stories where the ending comes abruptly and leaves you, as the reader, flailing on the edge of a cliff. In some cases it's not even that the plot has no resolution, because you could argue that a vignette doesn't really have a plot, but just that the narrative seems to come to an abrupt halt, like several paragraphs are missing.
Am I alone in feeling that about some stories? I can't think of any notable examples of this in the New Pros fandom but there were a couple of gen fic nominations in the Stargate Fan Fiction awards that left me with that sensation of suddenly being cut off. Like getting to the end of a novel and discovering that the last page is missing. The story may even be puffing along nicely, even well written in some cases (although I've come to the conclusion that well written stories in the Stargate fandom are thin on the ground), and then... nothing. So is it simply bad writing? The writers running out of steam? Or are they just as bad at ending things gracefully as I somehow feel I am? Can anyone think of any stories in NPs where this phenomenon is demonstrated? Are we lucky in that as in so many things?
And the converse I suppose. Are there any stories where you felt it simply went on for too long? God knows I've seen enough of that in other fandoms too, where a tighter story would have resulted if they'd ended it 20 pages ago but again, that seems to be a rarity here unless I've missed any. Maybe my boredom threshhold is set too high ::g:: Are there then obvious pitfalls that we, as writers, should avoid falling into?
In short - what can we do, and what do we do, to make sure that our endings are as strong as our beginnings?

...Coming to you courtesy of my Canadian friend Hettie, general nutcase and teacher of 2nd grade (right phrase?) children (actually she's probably a nutcase *because* she teaches 2nd grade but that's another story *eg*)
Anyway, she's been discussing the subject of pets with her kids: the kind of pets you can have, what they are like etc etc. We were talking last night about the funny ideas kids have for pets (long story) and then we got onto the subject of 'like owner like pet'.
This then degenerated into a what pets would our favourite fanfic characters have. Hettie is a Due South writer so obviously there's Fraser and Diefenbaker. But for some reason, she thinks he should have a lop eared rabbit. Ray got a ferret :)
Then we started on NPs *eg* Chris got a black cat (lithe, strokeable and with a cheshire cat grin), Sam got an Iguana (big eyes, green, spiky on the outside, soft on the inside) and Backup got a stick insect (don't know the logic behind that one ) :) Malone? Well we got stuck on Malone. Started out with Bloodhound but that was just too boring. Graduated to Lllama (something to do with the snooty facial features) but had to finish chat soon after :(
So, now plagued with image of Malone with pet Llama named Henry and Chris doing stretching exercises like a cat *eg*
Note to self - don't talk to Hettie while drinking alcohol.
