These Things Do Not Remember You
Title: These Things Do Not Remember You
Author: Gwyneth Rhys
Link to story: http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/4/thesethings.html
Zine: none
Short review: See comments below!

I know many people have a horror of death stories, but I like them, if they're well written and not sentimental. And with B/D I never see them living happily ever after or  even making old bones, poor sods. I think they'll die young  - and most likely violently.

I see TTDNRY and the next fic I'm going to rec, Endgame by Tarot, as sort of bookends and mostly read them one after the other. Both deal with the death of one partner and how the surviving one does - or rather doesn't - cope and finally dies, too. Very depressing, you might say, but I find a sort of dark satisfaction and even comfort in the fact that they're not able to exist on their own.

And both writers manage a beautifully fitting character portrait in their respective stories. I love them both to death.  ;)

Thank you very much for that posting!
TTDNRY was quite on top of my list and already printed.
Now I can throw it away.

No death story for me!
Reality is real enough!

- and how can it be 'not sentimental'?

You're talking about my two fav death stories in this fandom. I've read them both, and while they break my heart, I've also reread them. I agree that these serve well as bookends, and would recommend them, as you do.

Have you ever read Masterplan by Dinah? It too is a death story. "Technically" it's gen, but it could be read as slash, I think pretty easily. It's another of my favs. You have to deal with Bodie having an illegitimate son. But if you can pass that hurdle, the rest is smooth sailing. It's a wonderful story.

Thank you for reccing another fic to me! I have a 'Masterplan' by Laura on my eBook, but at the moment have no remembrance whatsoever what it was about. Have to have another look. Googled Masterplan by Dinah, but found only a dead link. And I have nothing whatsoever against gen!

If you want, give me your email and I'll forward you the story. I'm at work now, but can send it to you when I get home. I know I have it saved on my hard drive. It's lovely.

Hey, thanks a lot! It's indeed the same Masterplan I have on my eBook and I got it from the ProsLib-CD where it's archived under 'Laura'. But I still don't remember it and have to re-read it tonight!

Have now re-read 'Masterplan' and it's clear to me why I have repressed it. It's indeed a great story and I can bear the parts where Matt deals with his father's death and his decisions about the future - but when it comes to Doyle, it nearly breaks my heart, though I love to see him through Matt's eyes. The way she portrayed Matt's likeness to Bodie is uncanny. As I believe both lads to be dead by now, because in my personal canon they don't survive CI5, it's a comforting thought that something of Bodie remains and the wicked eyebrows aren't lost forever. I can only imagine how Ray must feel looking at him, so alike, yet not the one he yearns for, comfort and pain in one. The scene at the end with the urn and the ashes... no words.

Oh, I agree! Ray utterly breaks my heart. The scene where the two of them are out together, and Doyle puts a very drunk Matt into a taxi--when Matt says, "Cheers, mate," looking as much like his father as he supposedly did, and Doyle just =freezes=. God. I think I sobbed the first time I read it. I just love this story. Even though it breaks my heart.

And, btw, may I compliment you on your excellent Pros vids? I watched them all today and liked them a lot - especially the one which explains 'why Pros?' :)

Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed them. "Reasons" (the "why Pros" vid) is among my most popular. Ironically, it was by far the easiest to make. I think I was able to crank that out in 2-3 days. Usually my vids take 100+ hours. I think it's 'cause I knew what clips I wanted and I didn't have to worry about synching them with lyrics. :-)
