I'm a paperback guy, so I just got it in May for my birthday.
I read the first chapter last year standing in Target, and was pulled right in.

What a bizarre fucking book. Right up there in weird factor with Diary and Lullaby.
The other books have a sense of believability to them compared to these three.
That may be why some people don't like Diary or Lullaby. Whatever.

It's just a bizarre fucking book. With most his books, I can imagine the characters, and whatnot.
Would make a good movie in 7 years.

Seriously. I defy anyone to point out a bad performance from her.

You can't. Because she hasn't given any.

She made Gosford Park what it is, IMO (it's a big favourite).
Just a question, has anyone ever had problems with ordering from The Cult website? I ordered a shirt like a month ago, emailed them about it a couple times and never got an answer. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had issues, I mean, it could be that they're just really swamped right now with the new book having just came out and whatnot, but I'm still getting a little antsy.

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but has anyone noticed how almost every one of Chuck's books has a strong tie to parents? It seems like a general subject to link every book to until you think about it...

Fight Club- The obvious by-product of a dysfuntional childhood and lack of a parental influence. "Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed..."
Lullaby- Oyster literally calling them 'Mom and Dad' and the narrator liking the idea of it.
Diary- The in-law angle. That ever so stereotypical yet painful interaction between her and the mother-in-law magnified by the guilt of her husband being in the coma leaving her to deal with Grace, alone.
Choke- Largely revolving around him visiting and taking care of his mother. And the convoluted storyline of his conception relating to Jesus.
Survivor- The cult. Like Fight Club, shows the complete lack of parental influence. Although throwing in the ongoing involvement of the brother makes the appearance of a 'family situation' plausible.
Invisible Monsters- The parents are tied in here and there and, as with Survivor, it ties in the family feel with the constant involvement of a sibling.
Rant- Won't say much about this. But if you've read it: you already know.
Haunted- Not a strong pull in the parental direction but very much of a lineage. I felt Mr. Whittier was the grandfather figure to everyone and the group, as time went on, formed somewhat of an extended family.
Snuff- Well, you know. And if you don't, go read it.

It's been a while since I've read some of these so forgive me if some of the details are skewed or missing but it's as I remember it.
Input?

I am a hardcore Chuck P. fan living in Southern California. I've seen him on tour 3 times, the most recent of which I didn't actually get to speak to him because my boyfriend and I weren't able to arrive early (I was starting a new job that day), and the line was 3+ hours long. We went to a nearby restaurant after the reading, and came back but the line had barely moved.

My boyfriend and I are moving to Houston around the time that Snuff is set to come out. Just wondering if Chuck usually stops in Houston on his book tours. Anyone know?

x-posted to all of the Palahniuk communities I'm a member of. Sorry if you see it more than once.

Snuff information!

Book Description:

"Six hundred dudes. One porn queen. A world record for the ages. A must-have movie for every discerning collector of things erotic."

"Didn't one of us on purpose set out to make a snuff movie."

Cassie Wright, porn priestess, intends to cap her legendary career by breaking the world record for serial fornication. On camera. With six hundred men. SNUFF unfolds from the perspectives of Mr. 72, Mr. 137, and Mr. 600, who await their turn on camera in a very crowded green room. This wild, lethally funny, and thoroughly researched novel brings the huge yet underacknowledged presence of pornography in contemporary life into the realm of literary fiction at last. Who else but Chuck Palahniuk would dare do such a thing? Who else could do it so well, so unflinchingly, and with such an incendiary (you might say) climax?
More information here.

Does any one know anything about the supposed Rant trilogy? I've found nothing confirming that the next two book releases will be directly related to Rant, but that they could possibly be of the same genre. Any information to set the record straight would be greatly appreciated!

The Wedding Present.

So, as everyone knows, Chuck had said he was going to be sending out some surprises to people who dressed up for his "RANT" readings. I got my package and letter from him today & have been endlessly amused by the great, weird stuff he put in it. And more jewelry! I'm getting quite the collection of Chucky P jewelry. The man needs to go into business.

He's just...amazing. Unbelievably thoughtful and generous. And the stuff he manages to remember from one letter to the next is astounding! My new necklace now has my birthstone in it, for example!

Just wondering if anyone else has gotten theirs yet, and if so, what's in 'em. (I didn't want to say too much in this entry in case it spoils some surprises, even though no two packages ever seem to be the same!)

(x-posted to palahniuk)

So, Chuck has been here in Hamburg, Germany yesterday and it was a blast to see him live and in action. Unfortunatly there weren't any inflatable moose heads because the german customs didn't allow them...instead he gave away adressed envelopes with cards, in which everybody who asked questions at the Q&A could write his mailing adress, so he can surprise them with a package.

Of course I asked him something (which I was planning to do anyway). I asked how he choses a title for his stories and if it bothers him, when he hears that they get a total different title when translated in another language. He already pointed out earlier during the reading that he has learned to let lose of his stories because once they are published or eventually turned into a movie he hgas no control over them anymore and if he was trying to keep control of everything he ever published he would be pretty fucked up very soon.

He didn't answered the first part of my question, but I got a chance to ask some more questions when he was signing my copies of Invisible Monsters and Choke.

he was signing my books and repeated the first part of my question how he choses titles and he said that he prefers it to be one word verbs, like Choke or Rant and that Survivor was chosen by his editor. When I mentioned that I actually like the title he replied that hates it..oops, haha.

I also asked him how many drafts there are per book until a) he is satisfied with the result and b) his editor is satisfied as well, which he answered with about 5 times by him and 3 times by the editor.

He wrote that dedication because I asked him if he is still sending out rubber ducks because I read in here that he used to do that, he grinned ands said that he just picks random stuff and that I should be patient.

When I gave him the second book he wanted to know if it's mine as well or my girlfriends who was standing next to me. I told him that it was mine and Lisa said that she didn't really knew him (she knows the Fight Club-movie, which she really likes and that I am pretty fond of Chuck) but was dragged along by me to come and see him, when I read that he was coming to Hamburg. So he wrote the above dedication. She lauged and told him that it wasn't torture at all because she liked what she had heard. We both wished him a safe trip/flight home, shook hands and went home.

btw: Montag is german for monday in case you haven't figured out ;)

I haven't read Rant yet because I was a bit disappointed after Haunted, which only had 3 or 4 good stories, imo, but I really liked what I heard at the reading, so I will make sure to get a copy as soon as I have some money and time for books again.

He also read a new unpublished short-story called Cold calling, which was pretty funny.

There are also some pictures from the reading, including Chuck with a bald head, which looks very weird, but they are on my girlfriends cam and I have to wait until she sends them to me...

PS: Sorry for spelling/grammar mistakes, I wrote this in a haste because I need to get back to my work.

On The 'Choke' Set With Chuck Palahniuk

CEDAR GROVE, New Jersey — It's just starting to rain as Chuck Palahniuk guides me through an abandoned mental hospital late on a Friday night. And he couldn't be more excited. Now to be fair, perhaps the euphoria is warranted. We are, after all, on location for the filming of "Choke", Palahniuk's best selling subversive novel about a man who takes to forcing food down his gullet so as to become the beneficiary of clueless good Samaritans.

Palahniuk is an odd duck. Put it this way, about 30 minutes earlier when I first met the unassuming, 45-year-old "Fight Club" author, he opened our conversation by excitedly telling me how three crew members of the production have recently been victims of biting accidents (two involving dogs, one a disgruntled girlfriend). He says all this through a grin and with such soft-spoken gentleness I easily could have thought he was telling me a bedtime story.

That incongruity between the sweet outside and the sinister interior shouldn't be surprising given the subjects the author traffics in: sex, obsession, violence — and did I mention sex? Sam Rockwell stars in this latest book-to-film translation (due in 2008) as Victor Mancini, a colonial theme-park worker with "a lot of mommy issues" (Rockwell's words, not mine). Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston plays the formidable mother Ida Mancini, who is dying in a hospital bed throughout much of the story (the former Essex County Hospital subbing for Palahniuk's St. Anthony's).

This is the writer's fourth day on the set but he's already picked out his favorite moment of the shoot: watching Victor force-feed his mom chocolate pudding. "I watched Sam do that to Anjelica over and over, and every time she would have to spit it all out into a bucket," Palahniuk says. "When she was done, Anjelica came up to me in her hospital gown with pudding all over her face and said, 'This is all your fault.' "

There's a strange energy on the set tonight. Power failures on two occasions haven't soured spirits, nor has the increasingly crazy weather, a mix of 90-degree heat (abetted by ruthless humidity) and the occasional thunderstorm. And then there's the bizarre assembly of guests dropping by. "Choke" director Clark Gregg's wife, Jennifer Grey, has been circling the action with their 5-year-old daughter in tow (Grey's father Joel plays the head of a sex addict group in the film). And director David Gordon Green, coming off his own shoot for "The Pineapple Express" (see "Are 'Pineapple' Pair Seth Rogen, James Franco The Next Harold & Kumar?"), has been chatting with his friend, cinematographer Tim Orr. Meanwhile, "Grindhouse" star Marley Shelton sits in front of a monitor watching playback of a scene alongside her producer husband.

Then there's the gentleman standing beside us, who I point out to Palahniuk. "That's Dave Matthews?" he asks me incredulously, as I inform him that the musician is one of the backers of the film via the production company, ATO. Soon the odd pair share a moment in the sweltering gymnasium that's currently doubling as the interior of a plane. Palahniuk's editor later admits to me that he had no idea that the tall man who identified himself as David earlier was in fact Dave Matthews.

"Let's get Chuck in here," Gregg says. It's a last-minute decision for the first-time feature director (best known for his acting in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and writing of "What Lies Beneath") to get the mastermind of the story in for a cameo. "I always wanted to get him in there and all of a sudden I had this empty airplane," he explains.

Coming off the high of his impromptu idea, Gregg takes a quick break to confide, "If I'd known how hard this was going to be tonally and thematically I would have definitely chosen something else."

The rain is really coming down now, beating the roof of the gym with a deafening power. But the sound doesn't interfere with the scene, one in which Rockwell simply has to get up from his airline seat and walk out of the frame. What we're not seeing is what goes on in the plane's lavatory — a scene that one of the film's producers has described to me as Victor's origin scene, which takes place before he has discovered he's a sex addict. Waging war with the sound of the rain is a portable stereo playing "Locomotion." Gregg tells me this was Rockwell's idea. Clearly energized by the music, Rockwell jokingly humps part of the set after he walks out of camera range on the final take. It's not quite Radiohead's "Creep" (which Palahniuk wrote the book to), but it gets Rockwell where he needs to be.

It's day 20 of the shoot ("Trying to shoot a movie like this in 25 days is crazy," says Gregg) and the last night for Rockwell. He sounds simultaneously saddened to move on and relieved. "I like Victor a lot but it's probably time to shed him," the actor says, comparing the character to a modern-day Hamlet. "It's about a guy who's going from boy to man. He's trying to let go of his mother and say goodbye to being a boy. It's very Freudian."

Which of course brings us to sex, a subject very much on Victor's mind on virtually every deliciously dirty page of the book. And the film looks to be no different. "The sexuality in it is ferocious and comedic," Rockwell says. "It's pretty wild." Gregg calls it "unapologetically edgy, thought-provoking, outspoken material." Edgy would also be the proper word for the gift that crew members are receiving courtesy of the production. Palahniuk gleefully shows off a sex toy that figures prominently in the book and film. He brags that he's gotten Rockwell to sign his.

Despite its short shooting schedule and small budget (somewhere between three and four million dollars), "Choke" is aiming high in terms of ambition. "We're aspiring to make a movie like 'Boogie Nights,' 'Punch Drunk Love' or 'The Fisher King.' Very epic films," Rockwell says. Make no mistake; this is not "Fight Club." Palahniuk says the production feels "entirely different" and that Gregg and Rockwell are getting along much better than that film's director and star (David Fincher and Edward Norton). Eschewing the famed Fincher technique of shooting dozens of takes for the simplest shots, Gregg's approach is practically run-and-gun, nearly always getting what he needs in two or three takes. "This is a very different film from 'Fight Club,' " Rockwell says. "It's much more tongue in cheek. It's a lighter film. It has a different kind of intensity."

Reverence for Palahniuk's material is evident from all involved and the production looks to be a faithful adaptation down to the author's unique first-person narration. Still, there will be differences, and Palahniuk for one is happy about them. Describing the addition of a key scene between Victor and Ida in the first act, he says, "This is like one more rewrite."

Source

Just curious - has anyone read Clown Girl by Monica Drake yet? I guess Chuck P. reccommends the book & even wrote the intro for it. Amazon.com even lists the book as "by Monica Drake, Chuck Palahniuk."

The plot sounds fairly interesting, almost Geek Love-ish... any thoughts?

I have a favor to ask...

I'm working on an image resource journal: hfimages

The people that are incorporated in to my graphics for the most part are considered obscure and thus it can prove to be difficult to find decent images to create graphics of them in the first place. The purpose of this journal is to archive high-resolution and quality images that I use to create my graphics and icons found at: hficons. These are there for my own personal usage and for others to use in their graphics.

If you have any images of this sort that are not already in any of the galleries, I would appreciate it to no end if you contributed to the archive. To do so: leave a comment here and if approved they will be added to the gallery with your LiveJournal name given as credit in the hover-over alternative text. The archive is really for every graphic/iconmaker's sake, so not only will I appreciate it but I'm sure many others will as well. (:

Forgive me if this questions is being asked out of my own ignorance, but what do the symbols after the names mean? They look like suns and/or moons to me, all at different points in their cycle. Why are they there? What is the significance of different people having different points in the cycle?

I haven't finished the book yet, so if it's explained later, please just tell me to be patient.

Thanks!
