Offroad Tires - Getting Dirty With Style

What to do with the inherent urge you feel every time you quick spot an opening in the brush, in a trail that may or may not lead to an off road utopia? What do you think you should do, you Nancy, slam the brakes, twist the wheel, apologize to whomever is sitting next to you for the fact that they will not be making it to their intended, particular destination at that moment and tear off road and into the liberation of street sign-free good times.

Well, wait, hold on for a moment. While it's true that I do think that, for the most part you should do that, there may be a thing or two slightly over-impulsive to that off roading call to arms. First off, really you should drop your passenger off and let them walk to their destination (we are members of decent society after all). But, more importantly, consider if you truck is ready for the offroad.

One of the biggest considerations here will be what your tires are looking like. If you already have off road tires, then that's great. If not, consider for a moment that purchasing higher tires while offer you greater ground clearance, while the shorter offroad tire will give you more traction. If your not already set up with an aggressively treaded tire (and at times even if you are), you may follow the time honored activity of offroaders everywhere and air down (or let air out of your tires). Its fairly easily understandable how and why this is come to be common practice by those heading offroad. By lowering the air in your tire and effectively lowering and widening the tire you can quickly and easily multiply the traction you are going to have. The is quite helpful, but certainly try to not go overboard with the air down. An obvious problem to this is that the sidewalls of your tires are going to really open themselves up to vulnerabilities and punctures.

There are certainly plenty of other options that one can make while setting up for heading offroad, so go check them out and figure which one is for you. Some may fall under a category of pretty strictly offroad, while others will really offer some advantages to both bring onroad and off.

I know there are plenty of sites to search for restaurants in Chicago on, but i'm looking for places that are nice, have good food, and are open late. I don't get out in the city enough to know this stuff, and whenever i'm out there at night, it seems like everywhere closes early. Do you have any favorite restaurants that are good, nice (doesn't have to be formal, just not a bar with food), and open past 11:30 PM (at least on weekends) downtown?

I guess i'd prefer either an Italian place for some pasta or a Steakhouse... but all suggestions are welcome. :)

PIG is Raymond Watts.

Watts began his arrest record in London where he was most likely pissed off about something and doing sound manipulations, loops and live sound for Psychic TV. He soon crashed into Einstuerzende Neubauten (probably in a strip bar) and escaped the smug complacency of the English music scene by moving to Hamburg, Germany and setting up his Building Site studio in a bunker of munitions factory, where he invited in artists including Sprung Aus Den Wolken, Die Haut, and Christiane F. In his pursuit of a cutting edge music scene he sought out like-minded souls to create terrorism instead of tonality. Playing on European/American Neubauten tours, he quickly earned a reputation for destroying PA systems -- the security guards sent by the PA companies to protect the gear were not amused. Between their security thugs and ones hired by Watts to protect him from them, most nights ended up bloody, tense and occasionally on fire. Burning the stage and blowing up the PAs...you should have been there.

While collaborating with Neubauten's "gritter" twins: Blixa Bargeld and FM Einheit, Watts lived in the red light district next to a brothel, in amongst the sleaze of the Hamburg docks. Watts heard about Sascha Konietzko who was doing bizarre work with vacuum cleaners, and after drinking him into submission, dragged him and his tall, pale cohort En Esch down the stairs into the freezing Building Site studio, where they locked themselves into Watts' "frozen cesspit" with 20' steel sheets and other garbage, emerging with the KMFDM debut What Do You Know Deutschland?

When the wall came down, Watts split his time between London and Tokyo, looking for a new alien habitat after Berlin's pleasure dome exploded. PIG is big in Japan. Well of course he is. He's 6'3". PIG morphed with various collaborators and Watts started working with Japanese musicians, turning his attention to Schaft, which became a huge hit there. The Watts system emerged as an elastic style of working with refuse and collaborating with pariahs: one man's trash is another man's treasure, darling.

Long-time PIG fan Trent Reznor came to see him around '91/'92 at a tiny club in Camden, London, England and introduced himself to the unimpressed Watts who was surprised that this fellow knew most of PIG's scattered discography. PIG was invited to open Nine Inch Nails' European tour in '94 -- complete with real pig heads on stage that were a load of fun after a few days' decomposition. Later, in 1995, Reznor's Nothing label released PIG's fourth album, Sinsation.

In the mid 1990's, Konietzko ran into Watts again and they worked on the KMFDM vs. PIG EP, which led to Watts returning to the fold for Nihil, the most successful KMFDM album to date, which included the massive Watts-penned hit "Juke Joint Jezebel."

For 2005, Pigmartyr was re-mastered by Isaac Glendening of Cesium _137 and three bonus tracks were added along with new artwork to create Pigmata.

Wheee! We just got back from the grand opening performance of Emerald City Theatre's A Nutcracker Christmas (up at the Apollo Theater at 2540 N. Lincoln) ... and while it it pitched to families with kids (and is cetainly appropriate for the kiddies), it is hilarious in its own right. Frankly, I think I enjoyed it more than did my 9- and 5-year-old daughters!

This is a strange "modern" musical take on the classic Nutcracker story ... starring instead of dance-obsessed Clara, her video-game addicted brother Fritz, and with a female nutcracker (and, no, they "didn't go there" with the very tempting joke). The whole "Mouse King" thing is interwoven into the video game that Fritz is champion of, and his reaching the never-before-obtained "Level 22" allows the Mouse King to bridge realities. The Mouse King has most of the best lines (like: "I need to get a new temp agency, I ordered henchmen and they sent me Frenchmen" ... which also served to set up some "ripe" cheese jokes!), and leads a catchy new "anti-Christmas" tune:

Let's ruin Christmas -- let's throw it all away
It's always been over-rated
Let's call the whole thing off -- let's wreck the holiday
I never liked it anyway

There is also a Elton Johnesque "Mayor of Toytown", and several other "out there" characters which at times come close to being creepy but never quite cross that "kiddy show" line. They even have some cute little kids as sugarplum fairies (well, except for when they're on the boat, at which point they're the Ferry faries!), to bolster the "wholesome" side of the equation. All in all, the show reminded me of numerous far-edgier "twisted kids show" productions that I've seen over the years, but it managed to do this while still staying in "G" territory (but providing the adults in the audience plenty of opportunities to "make up their own jokes" for bits left subtly hanging).

I highly recommend this as a cure for the typical Holdiay saccharine ... I hope they make it a yearly event! However, being a "holiday" show, it only runs through New Year's, so if you want to catch it, you'll have to act quickly.

Michaela took Buddhist refuge in 1984 and studied in many places in Germany as well as the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute in Delhi, India before moving to Kiel in northern Germany in 1994. From 1994-1998 she attended summer university in Dagpo Kagyu Ling, France. In 2004 she and others at Kiel had the honor and pleasure of hosting the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje.
