chips_remixed: What's all this then?

I've never participated in one of these before, so everything I'm about to say is purely theoretical on my part. However, here's how a fic remix challenge should work...

Whad'ya mean, "remix?"
Remixing a fic is just like remixing a song: the remixer takes the essential elements of the fic and then rewrites it, incorporating their own artistic sensibilities and style, while sticking close enough to the original work that everyone else will be able to go, "Oh, I know this one!" It's a chance for you to take a fic and put your own spin on it.

"Essential elements?"
When you remix a fic, there are three things that you can not change (herein lies the challenge, I suspect): the pairing/central characters, the setting, and the basic plotline. What you can remix to your heart's content is the POV, the dialogue, the characterisation, the tone, the length, the tense, all of that nuts and bolts stuff. As long as the central characters, the setting and the basic plotline stay the same, everything else can be messed with. You may think of the original fic as being a very detailed, extended "prompt" which you, the remixer, will be fulfilling.

Someone, sometime, somewhere must have done a Who fandom remix challenge before, because there are remixed Who fics out there. This page on Teaspoon should help you locate examples.

So, I just go out and pick a fic to remix?
Not so fast. You are not going to go out and pillage someone else's fic without their permission, nor is anyone going to do that to you. What will occur is that you will sign up (more on the specifics of that process below), and I will assign you another author who has also signed up, and that's the person whose fic you will be remixing. Thus, everyone who signs up will get one author remixing your fic, and will be assigned another author whose fic you will be remixing.

Here's my fic! Remix it!
Again, not so fast. When you sign up, you will not be able to choose which fic you want remixed. That's up to your assigned remixer. What you will be able to do is choose one "safe" fic—the one you don't want anyone messing with, for whatever reason. I'll pass that information on to your remixer, but beyond that your entire Doctor/Rose masterlist will be at their disposal.

I write _________, can I play?
This remix challenge is limited to Doctor/Rose (or Doctor & Rose friendship) fics. There can be any other characters along for the ride, it can be OT3 or gen or anything in between; any rating; any era; as long as it features the Doctor and Rose in some capacity. If you've written more than three fics of that nature (of more than 500 words each), you're welcome to participate in the challenge. Primarily I'm limiting this challenge to Doctor/Rose because I've never modded one of these things before, and a fandom-wide invitation seemed like something that would cause me to go to my grave early due to possible volume. So, for now: Doctor/Rose. If this goes well, I'd love to run future fandom-wide challenges.

Where do I sign?
Sign-ups will open on May 16 and will be open for one week. In the mean time, please peruse the logistical whys and wherefores below:

• Sign-ups are NOW OPEN at this post right here.


• When you sign up, you will be agreeing to deliver one remixed fic by the due date (July 8), and you are also agreeing to have another participant remix one of your fics.


• After sign-ups close on May 23, you will be contacted with the name of the author whose fic you will be remixing. You will not be told who is remixing yours: that'll be a surprise when it's posted.


• Did I mention the due date was July 8? That is about 6 weeks from when assignments will be sent out, so please make sure you will have enough time to meet the due date before you sign up.


• When determining whether you've got the inclination and time to participate, please keep in mind that there will be a minimum word-count of 1000 words for all remixes. So, no drabbles based on someone's epic 60K word novel, please. At least 1000 words, no upper limit on word-count.


• A word about teh pronz: On the sign-up form, you will be asked about what percentage of your Doctor/Rose masterlist is Adult-rated, and you'll also be asked if you're okay with reading/writing smut or not. This is so I can match people who aren't okay with reading smut with people who have a lot of non-Adult-rated fics on their masterlists. Beyond that criteria, all matching-up will be done randomly. But rest assured that if you are under-aged or don't fancy reading porn, I will do my level best to accommodate you. Likewise, if you write a lot of porn, you needn't fear someone being assigned to you who will be horrified.
