The Jackahuahua? Meh
So, trend alert! A 'breed' thats starting to become more popular is the Jackahuahua.

Half Jack Russell Terrier and Half (you guessed it!) Chihuahua.

I personally think its ridiculous. I guess I kinda get annoyed by people owning a dog because its a trendy item, ya know? Like those Puggles. ugh.

Jackahuahua

Both breeds can be great... but bred by people who probably don't know what they're doing, and put in the hands of owners who probably don't know what they're doing? Not so much. I can imagine they'd be quite a handful!

I have been around this sort of mix and in my experience they are NUTS. Like they get the snobby attitude of a chihuahua and the hyperactivity of a jack... haha

LOL! I actually have one of those, and she's a little angel. She is a bit high energy (but not NEARLY as high as a full Jack), but also has the gentlest, sweetest personality. Of course we got her from the Animal Shelter, so I doubt she was a "planned" mix ;)

I actually like these breed mixes, I think they're cute and healthier then a lot of pure breeds.... What I find HORRENDOUS is that people are now breeding mixes willy nilly and charging RIDICULOUS prices for a pup that is more or less a mutt. People be crazy....

Ditto. Ally (our mixed breed chi/JR mix) is an awesome dog - as my friend described her, "She's just CHILL." Very calm, affectionate and sweet. Then she has her bouts of "play play play!", we have our short walk and then she crashes again.

Sweet. I have a designer breed about 6 years ahead of popularity! Back then, we called it "mutt" and we paid an adoption fee of $100. Who knew we were trendy?!?

Having one you got from a rescue or shelter: win. Specifically seeking one out from a BYB: FAIL!

It's actually a myth that mixed breeds are healthier. I mean, if you take a Chihuahua with luxating patellas and breed it to a Pomeranian with luxating patellas, are you really going to end up with puppies that won't have luxating patellas just because mom and dad were different breeds? Nope. Sadly, it doesn't work that way. If there's a genetic health problem in the lineage, breeds don't matter.

The Rottweiler x Lab puppy with horrible hip dysplasia still happens, just like the purebred German Shepherd puppy with horrible hip dysplasia happens. It has nothing to do with breed, or "purity" of lines. This is why health testing and studying pedigrees is so important. We can lower the chances of these horrible health problems happening. We can do this whether we're breeding purebreds or mutts. We just have to care enough to do it.

That picture looks more to me like a mix of chihuahua and rat terrier (the markings at least look more rat than jack to me). I'm not into designer breeds if they have nothing to do with more than trying to make more money for a "breeder" rather than for the good of the breed. What are they trying to improve by mixing these two breeds?

Ha Ha Ha. I have a Jackhuahua! Well, from her markings and temperament we figure that's what she is. The shelter said she was a Chi-Mix

This photo is from last November, she was about 8 weeks old and 4 pounds. Now she is almost a year and 12 pounds. http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc261/hgrether/Lulu/?action=view¤t=HPIM1069.jpg

my mother thought the colors made them look like "wild dogs". lol i just thought that was funny.

my doggy is a "trendy" chi-papillon mix that was tossed aside by a puppy mill when they had "surplus stock". i got him from a rescue, at first i was worried he would have health issues, he doesn't yet. i figure to survive in a puppymill he must be pretty hearty to begin with! (and similar to those jack/chi puppies he basically looks like a full blooded chihuahua)

it is annoying they would write an article about some stupid breeder. instead they should write one about how mutts from the shelter are better than designer dogs!

"He's a really rare breed" should actually read "He's a really common mutt."

I can't wrap my mind around the fact we have mutts just as awesome as those puppies dying in shelters by the millions every year and yet we "need" to breed more. On purpose.

I'm confused- I always thought a rat terrier was a chi / jack mix? I guess I'm wrong.

Sometimes I wonder if Remo has a little jack in him every time he goes bonkers. I guess because he's a rescue poocher I'll never know.

I have a minpin/chi mix. Is that trendy too? Although, she wasn't a breeders plan, just a backyard tryst that went awry. We adopted her from the people that couldn't keep her. I agree with the above, there are too many accidental mixes that need homes, why create new ones. So sad. But they are cute.

Oh, hey. That first pic is actually of "Dachshuahuas." I'm not surprised they could pass for purebred Chihuahuas at that age. My neighbor has a "Dachshuahua," and when he was that small he looked purebred. Now that he's older you can tell he is a mix.

My boyfriend's mama has a Rat Terrier (? we're not sure which Terrier breed it is), chihuahua, and dashuhund mix. She is sweet to us the family. I guess, cuz she is getting older she's becoming more protective, she's started nipping strangers that come in the house. So we have to put her in the pen or in her mama's room.

Saw this on PetSugar.com

Everyone basically said the same thing - these are common...in pounds & shelters! ;-)
It's just sad to me that that a big publication would put this as an article in their magazine.
Like someone else said, they should focus on animals in shelters instead of irresponsible breeders.
