Food bowl
Jazz has had two gray plastic bowls for a long time. She has never really warmed up to her food bowl. She is ok with her water bowl but not the food bowl. Lately, she won't finish her food. At first I thought it was because the food was bad. I bought a container for it so that it will stay fresh. It does take her a long time to get through a bag of food. To test the food I then dumped the remaining food on the carpet and she ate it. I thought that maybe she didn't like the noise the food made against the bowl. Maybe it being a plastic bowl there was some kind of static charge only a small creature can feel...I really don't know. However, the idea of dumping her food on the carpet is not appealing to me. So, I tried a little glass bowl. A human bowl. She likes it. It sounds like our food bowls. She now eats all her food and usually right away. She still takes 3 or 4 pieces at a time and puts them on the carpet before eating but at least she is finishing her food. I was trying to get a picture of her bowls and she continued to eat her food during the shot. :)

Thats pretty interesting, I wouldnt have even thought about maybe the static charge bothering them. I bought Herbie a new water dish, its the kind with the blue filled container that empties itself into a dish, and he gets really scared when water starts to go out and it goes "glub glub glub" :-/

That would scare Jazz as well.

Lilly won't eat out of a food bowl. Instead, she tips the bowl over and then uses her paw to push the food towards her.

They are such funny little animals. Lulu likes to lick all the dry food out of her bowl onto the floor and eat it from there.

Georgie is bizarre. She never just eats out of the bowl.

She will pick ONE piece of kibble up, run to her bed. Run in ONE circle, and then eat it. And repeat 5,000,000 times.

OR

She picks up one at a time, lines them all up PERFECTLY in a row and eat one at a time until they are gone.

No idea why. They are bizarre.

Plastic bowls can harbor all kinds of germs and mold and they can also discolor the leather of a dog's nose. We use stainless steel bowls that can be sanitized between every use.

We use hard clear plastic cereal bowls becasue they aren't too deep. I love those eating rituals you have all mentioned. Mine, however, are all gluttons and scarf their food down without breathing, wherever we put the food.
Now, I did have one chi who would play a game with her milkbone. She would nudge it to me. Then I had to hand it back to her. then she would nudge it to me etc...finally she would eat the thing.

My dogs have 2 outdoor bowls, and 1 indoor bowl. The indoor bowl is one big blue plastic dish. The outsides are one green plastic dish and a slightly smaller red dish. All our dogs do different things. Booby-Doo will take a bite of food and run to grandma's feet put it on her shoe and eat it off there. Pablo, Tinkerbell, Honey, and Moo all eat straight from the bowl. Sometimes Moo decides she needs to move away from the others and eat it but most of the time she eats it with them. But with treats and toys, she'll run and get it, zoom to a big enough area, drop it in the middle, then run in a partial circle, run to it, nip it, zoom the other way in another partial circle, and do this fifty gazillion times. Then she'll grab it and come lay next to me, against me, or in my lap and prod me with it until i hold it so she can naw on it. Or if i'm not there or don't want to, she'll wedge it inbetween the cushions and chew on it.
