| Back from a long day out |
[26 Jul 2008|04:05pm] |
So my host is out of town for a couple of days leaving me in her place with a charming cat,.. who realizes mama is away and tries to us me as a substitute. Purring and cuddling is lovely, licking my head and trying to eat my hair is weird.
I slept in a bit which is odd since I took ages to fall asleep due to drunks yelling outside and the ambient light. But I had had a nap so there you go.
I wander toward town, hoping against all hope that the CityBike I saw last night by the Posti was still there. No luck.
So I head across the street to the market and peruse the offerings. Like an old lady I buy a litre of green peas and walk down to the water, rambling along the docks, eating my green peas.
Deep into downtown and tourist land I watch a wedding party get ready for the cathedral, hear Russian, Spanish and Japanese in the air, and find a free museum. Free is good!
The Museum of the City of Helsinki is small, nicely curated, and a lovely pocket view of life in a city. There are a few beautiful outfits well displayed with lots of room to move around. The photographs on the walls cover from early photography up to the eighties and are not cluttered with lots of text patches. Instead there are cards in English, Finnish and Swedish that describe the photographs. Very nice.
I then ask a tourist information person - in an easily identifiable lime green shirt. She suggest the bike tours that leave from Amanda as well as a place that rents them but only until 5 pm. I thank her and bustle off toward the kauppatori, or at least I think that is what it is called.
Postcards are purchased as well as stamps. I walk up and down the stalls, watching people, listening, checking out merch, and generally meandering.
I considered taking the ferry to Suomenlinna but the line was nuts, so I'll have to go earlier in the day, or just wait.
I head toward home, stopping in the SMarket for groceries. A fellow asks me if I speak English. Being that I do I assist him with finding %100 juice, no added sugar or preservatives. He is from Ghana and is visiting his daughter. I feel like a good Samaritan and continue shopping.
One very heavy bag later I stagger up the hill home and greet the cat. He is confused but goes with it. I have proved I know where the food is so I can't be all that bad.
I stash the food, make a quick sandwich and open my email and LJ. What? No letters? No updates? Guys I just had a nice long day and nobody back home is even writing? Oh, yeah. It's not yet dawn at home. I better give you a few hours, eh?
So without uploading pictures you can still take my word that the weather was glorious, the crowds were many, and so far I blend right in. At least to other foreigners.
Hope you are all well. Some postcards will be in the mail soon.

[25 Jul 2008|10:35pm] |
Hitostu (first) - It's me, the Jillkins. Back with moonbeams in tow. I have a couple weeks to visit and will be sure to make Alice miserable. :D Now that Alice is speaking Japanese, I really have no idea what she is saying.
Alice - *looks in Jill's ear and cleans it out* There, better?
Jill - Huh?
Kelli - Knock it off, you two. Welcome back, Jill. We missed you. We have quite a weekend planned for you.
Alice - Kondo no shumatsu ni tanoshii desu ne!
Jill - Hah?
Alice - I said, this weekend will be fun.
Jill - Didn't Kelli just say that?
Alice - *bonk*
Kelli - Alice finally got off of her sorry butt and went running with me again...for three sorry miles, but it's a start. Then, tomorrow night, we have a ninja party. Our friend, Melissa and her b/f invited us to a ninja party, where we'll go as ninjas.
Alice - Hai, ashita no ban ni tomodachi no uchi de ninja paati desu.
Jill - Do I go as a Sith or a Jedi?
Alice - ...wrong genre.
Jill - Huh? Who's going to be the grand muff tarkin?
Alice - Kelli, give her a noogie.
Kelli - *Noogie* Ok, Jill, let's go play so Alice can tell her story.
Jill - Bye!
Alice - :P See what I put up with? My pistol competition totally sucked. I wrangled...I mean earned a slot in one of the heats. I went up to my pool with my paperwork and reached down to draw and do a safety check and...no holster...no weapon. :O I forgot my weapon at home.
The competition coordinator asked me, "Where's your weapon?"
I gave him a stupid smile and shrugged. "I have rocks."
The whole pool (whom I know) laughed and one guy said, "Yah, for brains."
So, for two days I have rocks showing up on my desk and guys walking around with empty holsters. K-man has been particularly mean! "Did the Raven forget something? Does the Raven need a beak or wings, perhaps?"
I patted him on his bald head. "I just didn't want to take your lunch money again and make you cry like a girl."
After a few more parry/ripostes, me, him, my secretary, and a couple other folks are rolling on the ground in tears.
Kelli - Oh, you guys are nuts. Ok, one from me. I benched my weight. We were working out with one of Alice's uuuhrah friends and he benched Alice and I together. This musclehead benched 355. Alice and I together only make just over 250. She and I also jammed out lunges, squats, and abs.
Alice - And that boy can shoot too. I tried out his M-4 with EOTEC optics and it rocked!
Jill - Ok, can we watch the movie now!?!?

Today the go-getter planet, Mars, resides in meticulous Virgo and will form a trine to Jupiter, which now resides in hard-working, steady Capricorn.
Trines are harmonious aspects and this trine highlights the progress you can make with any work goals or projects you might have in the hopper (or on the horizon) right now.
Keep your eyes and ears open, and strike while the proverbial iron is hot if an opportunity presents itself. NOW is the time!
Go get'em Tigers!

Like knowledge matters in this game.
Your result for How good of a Calvinball player are you?... Your grade= A- Amazing Calvinball skills, but you lack knowledge of the game
Amazing. You are part of the 6.1% of the population that landed in this category.* Despite not knowing very much about the game and its history, you did amazing well when it came to playing Calvinball strategically. This suggests that you probably have a natural talent in Calvinball. You have learned that the trick to doing well in Calvinball is not brute strength, but quick wit. With your natural ability you could go far. Still, in order to be an expert, you must learn the lack of rules to the game. That will be the competitive edge you need to take on the greatest. You are definitely already talented enough to beat Calvin, but I still give the edge to the quick-witted tiger in that match-up. * This is a made up number. I need a baby sitter--who isn't going ot Pennsic!
Plotting for the trip to Bonfield Battles. I guess I will miss FooL this year. I wish I could do both.
Went to Mountain with liss76 to pick up one of the food co-op orders. It was a lovely trip, great day for a long drive.
Went out to dinner with finalcut999 last night. We stayed up late watching Dodge Ball, which was much better than I thought it wa going to be.
I have to find time to start transcribing Dryet's Dry Dinner and I have to find time to sort out Lydia's toys.

ok almost done with the first book, I like it a lot. My brain keep relating it all to a fine new chocolate. I'm hardly the chocoholic type but the way this book read is much how a fine dark chocolate with small delicate swirls of white chocolate and a hint of cinnomon should taste. I've never tried anything like that but that's what my brain compares it to....
I read way too late last night and woke up way too early this morning so i kept going. Work was a pain in the ass today and PMSing dind't help me want to deal better...

| Lovers' Cycle |
[25 Jul 2008|01:37pm] |
(composed Sunday July 20, 2008, posted today July 25, 2008 without edit)
The Earth to the Sky, Sun to the Moon, Each Star to another in love - Lovers, walk thus together Each step a part of their Close-holding dance, one Soul to the other - or more If they choose and accept, For Love chooses many Too blind to then see Whom they have chosen - But Love chooses not blindly, Each mistake a new lesson, Each foray, each stride A new sonnet - Man and his Bride - Till when do they part? For at times love seems dried And lifeless - but loving breath Shall blow, and kindled anew Each Soul's bright fire shines out, Earth to the Sky. Sun to the Moon. Each Star to another - or more.

| Gleaning and sowing |
[25 Jul 2008|01:31pm] |
(composed July 12 or 13, 2008, final edit today, July 25, 2008)
The battle is over, today the day won The crickets are singing in the late evening sun. That matters little to the peasants whose fields Lie broken and trampled, few crops left to yield That harvest for winter to come.
Still there is time, though the work may be hard: Re-seed the land and together stand guard, For harvest to come may take its own time, But those willing to share should turn out just fine And bring wholeness into each yard.
