What's for dinner tonight? Tonight I'm making Herb Rubbed Pork Tenderloin with Apricot Mop Sauce (low sodium, low fat). I'm making baked potatoes with low-fat cheese, chives, and fat free sour cream and broccoli for the side.
What are you making, or did you make? |

recipe suggestions for fancy pepper? I got 3 kinds of interesting pepper as a gift a while ago, and they've been sitting on the counter as I try to decide what best to do with them.
1. Javanese Comet's tail peppercorns 2. Balinese Long pepper 3. Muntok white peppercorns
The white pepper is the same shape as traditional black pepper, and I've used it as I would black pepper, but the other two are a little mysterious to me. The suggestions that came with them are mostly for roasts or meat, and we don't eat a lot of meat, especially not cooked in big chunks like a roast or something.
Any suggestions for specific recipes or ideas would be grand! TIA! |

Pulled pork loin? I got a few pounds of pork loin on sale and I'd like to make pulled pork in a crock pot. I know the loin is much leaner than a pork butt, so will it be totally awful? Thanks! |

What to do with radishes? We have gotten a pile of radishes in our CSA box in the last couple weeks and are stumped as to what to do with them. I'm not the biggest green salad person and would prefer to cook with them. So if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Current Mood: puzzled |

Full-Fat Plain Yogurt Okay, I thought I'd throw this out there since you guys are so clever at coming up with creative ways to use things up...
I usually buy non-fat plain yogurt for my breakfast, and yesterday I accidentally picked up a HUGE container (maybe 32oz) of the full-fat, cream-top stuff. Not that it's not creamy and wonderful, but it's a little too much for my daily breakfast. However, I'd hate to waste it...
Any idea of something fun I could do with it? I am a good baker, and experienced cook, so anything would work, really... |

pumpkin cheesecake I am thinking about making a pumpkin cheesecake using crushed ginger snaps instead of graham crackers as the crust. Have you ever done this before? It sounds like it would be a good pairing, but I don't know if the crunchiness of the cookies will make the crust too hard.
Thanks! |

I have an interview on Wednesday for this marketing firm in Laurel. Its for an administrative position and it is for full time. I thought it was pt when I applied but the hours are flexible so it can't hurt to go interview right? Keeps my on my toes, I haven't been to an interview in a while and I usually do very well in them :) I'm so ready to leave my current job, its just a matter of time I think. Current Mood: hopeful |

I hate fire season Damn, there's two already. And that one in Sylmar is really bad, already burning homes. Another reason to hate Mondays.
We are suppose to go to Big Bear this weekend but I'm already freaking out because I'm so so afraid of fires. Please, Santa Ana Winds, die down. Thanks. |

Pumpkin issues I've got a hankerin' for some pumpkin soup, which normally would be no problem around this time of year. However, I am currently in Berlin, rather than my native Minnesota, and the almighty pumpkin doesn't seem to get quite as much fall-time adoration here. So, although I've found a very tasty-looking recipe for homemade pumpkin soup, I can't seem to locate a sugar pumpkin. It could be that I just don't know where to look. However, I have seen a lot of " Hokkaidokürbis". I'm completely clueless when it comes to squashes, but comparing the scientific name ( Curcurbita maxima) with the list on the English wikipedia page, I think this is a hubbard squash or a buttercup squash (are those just two different names for same plant?). I've never had that before, but can I substitute it for the pumpkin and get pretty much the same taste? Would I need to make any adjustments to the recipe? Beyond that key problem, I'm a little confused on how I'm supposed to "peel" a pumpkin. Any tricks? Up until now, the only way I've ever cooked raw pumpkin was to cut off the top, remove the seeds, and stick it in the oven until it was mushy and I could just scoop it out with a spoon for use in pumpkin pie. I'm guessing that's not what it expected for this recipe. It also calls for the pumpkin to be cubed, but approximately how big should I make the cubes? (sorry for the very specific questions, but I'm rather useless in the kitchen unless I have very exact directions!) |

Awhile ago (I think it was on here) I saw an idea for a gift where you measure out the ingredients for a recipe in a jar and give it to people. Anyone know what I mean? |

hm What should I do with 4 large zucchini and 2 bunches of cilantro? Would it make a good salad or a gross salad? What if I turned it into a frittata? Also, what's in your favorite bean salad? I went crazy cooking yesterday but forgot to integrate the zucchini into the veg. "chili" I was making. I got cilantro because I like it and will put it into some guacamole, but it's a shame to waste the rest of the bunches. ( fake chili ) |

It's very frustrating when I'm trying to be all "rebel yell!" by coming into work 15 minutes late (since that's what everyone else has been doing), and emailing my boss to tell him as much at 8:35, only to get in and see that BOTH bosses decided at 8:50 they weren't coming into work today. Not only am I not as rebellious as they are, but I let myself get caught coming in late when they would have never known. Even when I'm being irresponsible, I'm still not the most irresponsible. Dammit.
In retaliation, I am spending my day writing my notes from the career books I read over the weekend in preparation for my advisement meeting on Thursday, and buying too many cheap scarves from the street fair downstairs during lunch.
ETA: Apparently I'm an impulse buyer, and just bought a piece of original artwork. It's some poppies. I think it will look great in my bedroom. I also bought four scarves. |

Baked Chicken I am looking to learn how to make chicken that doesn't use Shake and Bake, because I am trying to eat healthier. My big problem is that I don't know how to make anything besides S&B. How would I bake boneless chicken, without it being bland. What else would you put in the pan? Sorry I'm such a cooking n00b. Thanks in advance for any help. Current Mood: curious |

*kicks credit union* I need to renew my extra userpics, but we haven't gotten our new debit cards yet. Damnation. In other news p_dilla really gets me. How do I know? Because he showed me the Paddington Bear pic on Google. Like 2 people know that I love Paddington Bear. I'm not even sure when (or if) I told him I liked Paddington Bear. But as he just pointed out, it makes sense to anyone that knows me well. I had to kiss him for it of course, all the men in my house know when they please me a kiss is coming, but he's the only one that doesn't run from it. What happens in your house when someone does something that pleases you? Current Mood: loved |

Overall, the weekend has been pretty darn sucky.
However, a bright point was looking through the downloadable songs for Rock Band 2 and seeing "Skullcrusher Mountain." And then finding that we had the EXACT amount of points to buy it.
On a related note: Jonathan Coulton will be performing at the Moore theater on January 23rd (with Paul and Storm, too!). Tickets are $23 and there are still lots of seats available. And do yourself a favor and go to the Moore or the Paramount box office to get your tickets - you'll save the $9 PER TICKET user fee that Ticketmaster charges. |

Justin texted me this weekend.. Some days I think about running away from my responsibilities and joining the Peace Corps to help other people and focus on someone/something else other than myself for once. I had this discussion with my mother the other day when she was asking why I wanted to be a nurse. She doesn't really understand and I get that but still. It is hard to hear sometimes. Of course she is supportive and all but I guess working at hospital she sees a different side of things. ( Read more... ) |
