I did but I respect people who didn't, everyone's entitled to their own opinion on the situation and to do what they want to do and not have to follow others.
Oh wow you're right, the colouring on the original is so plain and boring and generally yuck but with the tutorial it looks so different. I'm glad it worked out so well :)

You're welcome :) I know some people prefer psd files so I figured seeing as I had it all ready done I may aswell post it, thanks though :) I really like that icon, very pretty :)
I'm feeling: hopeful
I'm being inspired by: Mya - You
I have an icon post to do tomorrow/Friday but in the meantime I thought I'd post this tutorial.
to
using Curves, Colour Balance and colour fill layers (1 of each).

We're going from
1: Take your picture and crop it to 100x100 and sharpen it to give you your base
2: Duplicate your base and set it to Screen 100% (you can play around with the opacity after if necessary)
3: Create a new Curves layer, my settings were:
RGB:
Input: 116 Output: 86
Red:
Input: 90 Output: 82
Green:
Input: 95 Output: 65
Blue:
Input: 85 Output: 72
I didn't change the blend mode or opacity and this was the result
4: Create a new Colour Ballance layer, my settings were:
Midtones: -49, -8, +9
Shadows: -56, -18, -11
Highlights: 0, 0, 0
Again I didn't change the blend mode or opacity to give me
5: Create a new layer and fill it with #f3e3b8 and set it to Colour Burn 100%
That's it, you're done. I've found the basic colourings with a slight change of settings here and there work well with most pictures, here are two examples of other icons I got using the technique.
For anyone who is interested this is a link to the .psd file.
Comments are always nice but I hope at least one person found this useful :)
