Orphaned and separated refugee children are considered the most vulnerable population in the world and over 3,000 are living in Kenya. Classified by human rights organizations as “unaccompanied,” most of these children have fled from persecution in the nearby countries of Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their families have been killed or have disappeared in the conflicts that caused them to flee. Others were abandoned or separated from their families when they crossed the border to safety.
Heshima Kenya is the first and only organization in Kenya to provide programs exclusively for unaccompanied refugee children in Nairobi and aspires to become a new model for foster care in the region.Anne, a friend who also happens to be my boyfriend's sister, is starting this Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). She has lived in Africa for almost ten years and is currently championing the cause of refugee children in Kenya. Her organization, Heshima Kenya, believes all children deserve a safe environment where they can develop and thrive with peace and integrity.
