TVs on PACE
Anyone know of a PACE users blog? Or a campaign to stop TVs on transit? I'm hating the new TVs on the PACE 421 bus. I posted about it here: http://tedernst.blogspot.com/2005/06/organize-to-rid-pace-of-tvs.html

They seem to be on less and less. I bet the drivers get pissed and disable them.

actually within the last week, i think i'd only seen them on much less than usual, which i thought was awesome. on the routes where the tvs were often on(i.e. 290, 208, etc.), i'd noticed about half of them weren't working or were off(i even saw one of those computers restart, and it was funny that i was the only person paying attention trying to figure out what type of computer and operating system it ran on, lol).

Oh, windows, totally. I've seen them crash a few times. I think I took a picture once.

Man, am I with you. Sometimes I just want to read without having my headphones on, especially if I'm one of the only people on the bus and it is nice and quiet. Now it's NEVER quiet. Sucks.

I ride the 606 and I am SO GLAD they don't have TVs. I rode a bus with TVs once and it drove me batshit.

Argh, those damn TVs. What's really bad is when some other passengers get a little raucous, and I have to listen to them carry on on top of bad synthesizer music. I think someone asked the driver once, and she said that they have no control over the volume.

I have maybe, maybe *once* been on a TV'd bus that had sound, and I think it was showing old I Love Lucy reruns. I have no real problem with this, but the design of the bus in general sucks; it seems like they went out of their way to make it seem plush and posh at the expense of the riders who now have to stand instead of sit, especially on routes with heavy ridership (think the 213, before and after school for New Trier HS). That's my main beef with the TV'd buses. When it's a long ride, no sound, and you don't have anything else to amuse you, it's not bad.

I daresay this is one of the reasons transit costs are inflating.

Do we really need these expensive, complicated buses? How much does it cost to maintain these things? And to pay for the broadcast rights? I doubt they are paying for themselves via advertising.

I'd prefer a mosre fiscally sound transit system than Hollywood-on-the-421.

The advertising most likely does more than pay for the TVs, but I think it's a horrible intrusion either way. When you are crammed in tight on a bus or train, your only retreat is a book or headphones. I look forward to my commute at the end of the day because it lets me wind down and read. TV noise would make it impossible to concentrate.

Oh, those are awful! They're so surreal . . . broadcasting their non news, like sports scores. Awful. Do we really need to be pacified by constant TV screens?

next they will install TVs in our bedrooms . . . .

The one time i saw the tvs (i rarely ride Pace) they were silent, and therefore ignorable enough that they didn't bother me. But i'd really hate them with sound, regardless of what the sound is. Hell, on the CTA such noises are officially not allowed... not that it's enforced, but still.

and speaking of this topic, this is a big reason why i like the older Pace buses more(the ones that are non-low floor models), since they don't have the TVs(or should i say faux TVs, since they're really computer monitors, lmao) installed on them at all. the 215 and 226 routes are so far where i've noticed they rarely run the newer low-floor buses on. i also believe both the 626 and 422 routes mostly use the same older model of bus as the 215 does, since i use the 422 every once in a great while(and i've based my 626 observations from all the times i've been at the Skokie Swift station waiting for a 97 or 54A bus).

They have commercials, stupid games, weather from other cities. Some real high up retard at Pace came up with this idea. This sounds like political graft to line a crony's pockets. They said they were doing this for the customers. Since when does Pace give a damn about what customers want? They never listen to the customer and that's why they provide such consistent lousy service and make life miserable for us commuters.
