Greetings and welcome to the LiveJournal Correspondence Chess Community!
For rules about how to play chess, we recommend that you try here for basic instruction.
As for correspondence chess, this community follows the tradition grid system for movement.
Here's an example for you:

As for the personal rules of the community, they are as follows:
Players declare intent to challenge another player by posting about it on the community frontpage. The defending player can either accept or decline the invitation. The game is declared active when the defending player accepts the invitation. The challenger then declares his first move and the game begins.
Games are then played by commenting back and forth in the normal coordinate system. (i.e. White: Bishop C1xC3)
We also ask that you place a timestamp along with the move. If a player does not respond to a move within 15 days, the challenger will offer a reminder that the game in still active. After 30 days, the idle player forfeits the game.
After the move, witty banter may, of course, be included.
Either player may forfeit the game at any time for any reason.
Games are recorded in full by the comments that have been posted.
Deleting previous comments will result in immediate forfeit of the game in play.
We recommend that you keep a chessboard or chessboard emulator handy so that you can keep track of the game you're playing. Remember, if your board is disrupted, you can always reconstruct it by the commentary. If you're REALLY gutsy, you can always play a few games at a time with several opponents.
Spectators can also watch and discuss games (after they have finished, of course) in the same post.
As for turn structure, the challenger generally goes first, but if the community wishes to pursue rankings, then the player with the lower ranking will lead.
Tournaments have not been planned, but are certainly a possibility.
Enjoy!
