Today I worked a shift, then I came home and watched the second half of season 2 of the League of Gentlemen (for the bazillionth time, I never grow weary). I had a shower and then Michael and I went to watch Bill Bailey (he performed at the Burswood Theatre. Incidentally, that is the same place we saw Dylan Moran). It was fookin brilliant that's all I need to say. Ohh but wait. There was a young couple sitting in front of me and they kept SNOGGING all the way through the show. It was gross, but worse than that, it was distracting. First they would both laugh outrageously and obnoxiously, then turn and look at each other fondly and have a bit of a pash. Sickening.
I dunno what makes people so annoying, is it a genetic disorder? Or does one grow into it?
On the way home we stopped and Michael bought us icecreams. When we got home I put on a load of washing and then rang my dad to sort out some deets. Michael got grumpy at me for being on the phone 'cause he wanted me to tuck him in. I tucked him in and now I'm here.
I am going to go and watch my Neighbours tape before I go to sleep.
I'm looking forward to sitting down with some vegemite on toast and a stiff cuppa tea. |

I enjoyed the Hadron Story on CNN this morning esp. the bullets:
--- Multibillion-dollar experiment to probe nature's mysteriesStory Highlights- Large Hadron Collider will have first attempt at circulating a beam September 10
- It's the largest particle accelerator in the world and costs about $9 billion
- Lawsuits allege it could generate black holes that could eat the Earth
- Scientists say these allegations have no merit
----
"God creates dinosaurs, God destroys dinosaurs, God creates man, Man creates Hadron Collider, Man synthetically generates black hole, Man destroys man. God is confused, yet, not surprised."

| | cheerful | ] | I am LOVING the pictures of J2 in the Red Bull Soapbox Derby. They make me irrationally happy. ^_^ Even if in ALL the videos Jensen is chewing gum with his mouth open, which really bugs me, but, because it's Jensen, I shall forgive him (for now)
TOMORROW IS ROADTRIP TIME!! I'm driving the Girlies down to Sheffield for a House Party. Emma's house warming. Awesomeness will be had. And though I am not a particular fan of driving, ROADTRIPPING is awesome, and I will insist on playing 'Highway to Hell' just, well, BECAUSE. (ROADTRIP ICON!)
And now I feel like drawing something. TATA!
Random eta that I think no one on my flist will care about...: Just kindof brousing round DC/Batman stuff, and I've just stumbled into an area where there is a great deal of love for Stephanie Brown, aka Girl Robin! And I just CANNOT relate to it. I have no love for Steph, no hate, but equally no love. I just, never really liked her. I am clearly a horrible person :P |

[Sep. 8th, 2008|03:14 pm] |
Is anyone else slightly disillusioned with the state of the world today? I mean, don't get me wrong, human beings have done wonderful things. We've managed to make computers small enough to fit into your pocket, but with powerful enough that they can do almost anything a full sized computer can. We can fit more data into a space barely bigger than a credit card than once upon a time could be fit into a whole room. From sitting here where I'm sitting now, I can (for the right price) gain access to any scientific journal, any book, and music that has ever been published in the world, and if I can have it delivered straight to my screen, I can expect most things to be delivered to me within three working days.
But seriously... This isn't exactly the fourth great and bountiful human empire. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed that in the 27 or so years I've existed on this big ball of rock and gasses, human technology has, in many ways, stagnated.
Take Concorde here. A flight from New York to Paris on one of these beauties used to take under 3.5 hours. Over twice as fast as it's best competitor and significantly quicker than any "modern" aircraft can manage. In fact I still remember, as a child, listening out for the sound of Concorde breaking the sound barrier as it passed overhead. Concorde was a wonderful piece of engineering which, at least for civillians, has yet to be surpassed. Yet this technology lies decaying slowly in a hangar somewhere. BA decided not to sell them when they were decomissioned (despite offers from Virgin) and now the only options for supersonic passenger travel are to spend millions refurbishing the near-derelict Concorde fleet or to spend billions developing a new version. Human technology, now lost. What a waste.
And what of the Space Shuttle? NASA are agonising over whether to push their luck and keep the shuttles flying or to decomission them in 2010 and leave the ISS out of their reach for years while they build a replacement spacecraft. Frankly, I'm not too enamoured with the replacement they're building. The Orion looks suspiciously similar to those old Apollo craft they used for the Moon landings. Haven't we moved on at all in 50 years? Is there no design of spacecraft they could chose other than pressurised tin can with a rocket engine? Why haven't they already built the Space Shuttle's successor vehicle? And as for the ISS, in terms of design, style, engineering and construction, it could most readily be described as Mir v2.0.
I've heard it said before that the Apollo missions were driven by "the kind of single mindedness a nation normally reserves for war". Therein, I fear, is probably the main reason why human technology is stagnating. It seems, us dreamers are going to have to wait until the pricate sector can afford to work on these problems, because the governments are quite content to chase their tails. |

Happy (early) 17th, Paddle Pop, only because I like to be early, as compared to being late, as compared to being one of those who fight to be first. Have you stopped flirting with girls already? Or did you get together with one for slightly more than fourteen hours and I didn't know? Too bad we don't live just blocks apart, else I'd really paint "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" on a vanguard sheet and wave it from my room. I know you'll be able to see, you'll always see me. Do you still like Paddle Pop, anyway? I still like ice lemon tea. Alot. I want to meet you. After promos okay, when we can lay down on our backs at the multi-storey carpark and spot Orion's. Provided you don't get a possessive girlfriend by then.
Xoxo, still the girl that won't stand naked by her window (if she was to stay at her old house still) |

 Struggling with the mask
Things are gonna get crazier, very, very soon.
First day of school since the ultra-man short Sept holidays was just boring. Chinese lessons were especially tedious, gosh I don't know why but I intuitively hate THE Chinese Teacher. I can just sense that she's just pretending to be what she is now. Right, dismiss me as being biased. Selfish reasons for her? I hope these are just unfounded suspicions. Blah!
Math 1 paper this friday! And subsequently, next week will be hellllllll. Everything it ends on 23rd September. K I am trying not to panic but...
Hormonal changes are making me extremely susceptible to sudden mood changes, that's bad, because I would never know what my body's gonna force me to feel next. I got extremely high after hearing Move Along by All American Rejects on radio during school. I am maaaaaad. But I find that song inspirational, hmmm mmm maybe it's just me.
Today after school I left immediately, ignoring the urge to head to the gymnasium to check if there was anyone balling. Walked far far away from school, along deserted roads, singing out loud to myself. Somehow it felt really good. Ended up taking a bus to somewhere(Tanglin....?) and then walked along the stretch of Orchard Rd or something, until I reached the bus 5 bus-stop opposite Far East. Was sweating quite a bit by then. Slept for super long on the bus. Bus 5 takes a crazy long time to get to Pasir Ris from Orchard...
Neck pain + asshole headache has been bugging me the whole damn day. My back has been aching too. The troubles of women(you know why). Tsch.
Need to go back to revising Physics. I'm feeling so hopeless now.
When all you gotta keep is strong, Move along, move along Even when your hope is gone, Move along, move along, just to make it through.

| Getting sounds OR Keep it simple, stupid |
[Sep. 8th, 2008|09:26 pm] |
Just spent quite a while with my POD trying to get some sounds for the revue. The POD has lots of built in effects, and allows me to switch presets using a MIDI foot controller. But it ruins my clean sound, so I think I'm just going to stick with the Boss distortion pedal and forget about the POD. And I'm slowly becoming one of those analog fascists I used to pick on. |

One last kiss One last touch One last tender moment between us One last dance To our first song While pretending there's nothing wrong Let's stay here for awhile and Cherish every moment we're in denial We both know Its better if we just let it go
OMG, I'm in love with this song :)))) <3

I took some big chances, riding on some relative newcomers pretty far, Professor Layton for example. For the first time I do not have Link winning. I have faith the Weighted Companion Cube from Portal can take it all in the final round against L-Block from Tetris.
The closest I've come to winning is being in the #47 position for a single day about 3 years ago. I hope this years big chances will pay off. :)
My finals bracket. For full picks feel free to ask.

"Когда ты последний раз говорил о любви?" - Спросила в IM одна моя знакомая. Давно. И не собираюсь начинать снова.
Кстати, к чему это я. У меня новая дефачка-американочка. Симпатичная и не дура вроде. Будущий офицер полиции, между прочим. И я вам говорю, это круто когда сексуальные фантазии сбываются! Гораздо веселее любви;) |

Waiting until I get paid in order to go food shopping has put me on the path towards rapid weight loss. Tonight in the deli I was trying to buy some rubber gloves for my lab tomorrow, unsuccessfully so, and the guy standing next to me at the counter groaned and said "You makin me feel mad tall."
I need a second job. |

On love, from Neil Gaiman (Rose Walker, The Sandman)
"Have you ever been in love? Horrible, isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses. You build up this whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you. They don't ask for it. They do something dumb one day like kiss you, or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so a simple phrase like 'Maybe we should just be friends' or 'How very perceptive' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a body-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. Nothing should be able to do that. Especially not love. I hate love."
Funnily enough, I agree with that entire paragraph. Friends, please feel free to bonk me over the head with rotten celery stalks and lob scrambled eggs at me. Please.
In the meantime, have another one, from Jeanette Winterson:
I used to be a hopeless romantic. I am still a hopeless romantic. I used to believe that love was the highest value. I still believe that love is the highest value. I don’t expect to be happy. I don’t imagine that I will find love, whatever that means, or that if I do find it, it will make me happy. I don’t think of love as the answer or the solution. I think of love as a force of nature—as strong as the sun, as necessary, as impersonal, as gigantic, as impossible, as scorching as it is warming, as drought-making as it is life-giving. And when it burns out the world dies.
...How have you all been doing? |

While I'm annoyed by yet another translation of a Greek work that doesn't use the actual names of lesser known Greek gods, I can understand why the translator and/or publisher uses them. Almost. I have a feeling that this has to do with the fact that the public is less familiar with somewhat more obscure deities, so perhaps they've done this in order not to confuse people. Still, I find this to be annoying because colleges and universities use these materials, and I worry that those who know even less than I do about Greek mythology will get the wrong idea about the subject, and think that they know more than they really do. If the publishers and translators are that worried about confusing the public while wanting to cater to academia, they should at least add a little glossary and/or dictionary of terms in each book. |
