short time lurker, first time poster...
I come with a scan from The Culture, a section of The Sunday Times newspaper.

Page 1
The headline is "They're a girl thing" but part of that got chopped off because the page is bigger than the scanner :/

Page 2

Just thought Id share.

And see who can spot the mistake...

Hahaha, I LOVE The Sunday Times, and I am reading the article right now, slightly inaccurate, but my parents are like "well, if The Times likes 'em, they MUST be good!" And they like Mikey. Aww.
Also, didn't they get Gerards age wrong? Isn;t he 27? Or have I made a mistake there?

This was an amazing article, if only in concept as the execution itself was a bit wobbly. I'm also taken with the fact that the majority of their fanbase is female and I can't help but viewing the band through a feminist lens. I think that there's a lot to find there even beyond Gerard's verbal attempts to raise girls' self-esteem and break down the negative influence of the media on body image. They're very female-friendly and accessible to young women and it's fantastic to see someone try to tackle exactly why that is. Thank you for posting this!

Hmm. I actually like this article. It starts out "WTF?!" but then when It ends, it says "good taste". You can't argue that many of MCR's fans are 16 but it's not a teeny bop thing, it's a musical thing. And i agree with the above, MCR is very girl friendly, they don't objectify women, they empower us if anything. And of course looks are undeniable *cough* I don't know, i thought it was interesting how they pulled it all together into a "yaay we like mcr" article from a "girl thing" article.

Yeah. Agreed. Those things don't really walk hand in hand. Like, when it started going on about the boyband-ish fans I thought for sure she would say they were overrated or something.

"Pure DeNiro" That's a good one but I wouldn't go that far, lol. I do agree a bit though, they aren't exactly pretty but they are cute in their own little way^^ I never used to notice that they had so many girl fans but it seems like that's being pointed out quite a bit now, I suppose they are accessible to females. Dangerous cult on the outside, lovable cheeky monkeys on the inside. XD

I'm torn. Yes, the article hit a lot of true points - there are a lot of female MCR fans, and yet... I don't think they quite got it. The reason why MCR attracts the fanbase it does. And there was a little too much comparison to boybands, implying that's the sort of thing girls go for.

It might have been more interesting for them to explore why there's this... generation of fangirls. Girls getting into rock music, and what it is about those bands that appeal.

And... maybe it's just me, but I didn't like the vaguest sexist generalisation in there. About rock music not being for girls. True, a lot of rock = misogynistic assholes, but I don't think it's fair to say that ye olde Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and other such old-school never appealed, or never could appeal to a female fanbase.

Anyway. I'm not entirely sure in which direction I'm headed here, so I'll just stop. xD

(Someone should write an article with a feminist perspective on rock music today and make particular mention of MCR and their pro-women message. Something that, really, makes me love them most of all.)

Oooh ♥. Yes. The thing that I really liked about the article was that it attempted to explore the whole female-friendly angle of MCR, even if it did get a little off track and make some generalizations (hello! I am a HUGE Pink Floyd fan!). It still attempted to write about that aspect in a semi-thoughtful way when other journalists ignore it.

I especially agree with what you said at the end about exploring rock with a feminist perspective because I particularly think about that kind of thing all the time. For instance, in regards to MCR, if we analyze what's happening in this one particular fanbase we might be able to get a clearer picture of what is going on with this generation of girls today. Why are they attracted to this music, this subculture, this aesthetic? Additionally, if female perspectives on music interest you, you might want to check out Pretty in Punk: Girls' Gender Resistance in a Boys' Subculture, which I plan to read soon. :)

Well, The Sunday Times wins at life anyway. Possibly the only newspaper around without an agenda (apart from it being owned by Rupert Fucking Murdoch, but we'll ignore that).

I think the article did really well in presenting what a superficial view of the band must be like to someone seeing them for the first time, but then actually cutting to the chase and focusing on the music.

There was also an excellent review of the new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in the paper, and a really amazing one of Equus a couple of weeks back.

When I grow up, I want to write for The Sunday Times <3

DeNiro? I'm sorry, but I barely hear an accent on Gerard. Actually, I don't really heard them on anyone, aside from the occasional slip-up on Frank's part. Maybe I'm just used to accents like his, and it'd be more prominent to someone from a foreign country... but no.

I suppose it's true that the median age is about 16 for MCR fans. I remember being in line for their concert in January, and at 23yo (and my friend who was with me, 22) felt like we were the oldest people in line :P I'm all for it though. Better than 16yo's listening to mindless drivel and growing up thinking it's okay to refer to women as "bitches n hoes".

Good Lord, a well-written article! Who knew such things still existed in the culture pages of major newspapers?

Although it is "world" and not "earth" in the line from Famous Last Words, and Frank could never, ever be accused of being not pretty. The others could be considered an acquired taste, but Frank is undeniably beautiful.
