A painting in progress...
I've been working on a painting for the last three months of Frank, taken from an image who I don't know who the credit for. However, it's turning into a very strong piece, and I'm at the point where I'm in need of some good constructive criticism...

Being as I don't really know a lot of people IRL that are into MCR, I figured the best place to ask were you guys (because I know a lot of you are fellow art students/artists or just plain Frank fans). Can anyone please give me some constructive criticism on this thus far?

Please note that the image was taken under false lighting (meaning it's much lighter in real light). I have to finish the microphone, his teeth, the tattoo, maybe the ear (I'm not sure yet), and do a few more layers of paint on his face. Might throw in a background behind him...but yeah...and I'm aware that his lip is a little wacky.

Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Does it represent him well?

Did I capture it?

Can you understand what's going on?

Also, if you know the photo that it's originally based off and know who the photographer is, I would appreciate a name of that, too, please?

Any and all input is greatly appreciated, no matter how harsh you guys are capable of being (and I'm willing to take very harsh criticism if need be).

I agree with the hair. Before I added the line, it was really hard to make a distinction between the skin and hair. Maybe a bit darker in the hair?

Thanks very much.

yes. his hair was almost white and it would take away from the picture if you made it darker again.

but besides that, like i said, i love it.
i paint and i could prolly never do that, hahaha.

Hm. Okay. Thanks =)

And I bet you could, it just takes several layers of paint and a lot of patience. =D

Only thing I can see (and it's really late LOL. More concrit when I can see straighter) is that his jaw seems to...stick out a bit too much? Frank has a rather feminine jaw, in that it's more tapered and less bulky. :D And yeah lightening up the blonde. Other than that it's lovely.

This is amazing. Honestly. And I think you captured him almost perfectly.

There is just something about the jawline that doesn't quite sit right with me. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's a little to rounded?

But yes, this is wonderful.

I agree about the jaw. I think it had something to do with me not referencing the image in so long, but after looking at it I realized that part of it is his neck and the other is his jaw.

Thanks very much for your input.

I agree about the jaw thing.
The only thing that bothered me when look at it was that it was like BAM!jaw. As if it's swollen.
Lighten the hair a tad. And skin.

Other than that, it's great. I could never do anything like that. So I commend you. :]

Well, i do have it say, your painting interests me. I do have a few things to say though:
1. I do agree with lamer_than_you with the hair
2. Yes, the lips do look kindy wierd
3. maybe not the best pic to do, but a very good one for this type of artwork. It looks like something that should be in a tribute to andy warhol museum!
4. i like how the shirt and the hair in the front looks
5. The make up looks a little stiff, kinda clown like. i would've faded out a little more, and some of the shadow, you can't tell if it's from not shaving or because of the light.

but, i still do have to say, that's pretty amazing. If i attempted to do that, it would probably look like a 2 year old put it together. I'm more of an art studier(because i don't like how my drawings look)and ceramic artist. ^_^
bonne chance!

I'm glad you agree with me. Maybe I can mix another color around the eyes...moreso the bottom of them?

And actually its not Warhol; it's Alex Katz (the style, which I developed before I even knew who Katz was). Warhol was a bit less solid with colors.

Thanks for the crit.

i agree, that's where it's most predominant.

and, kudos to you on your own style! It made me think of a pre screened warhol silk screen that i had done before with all the none fading color. ^_^

good luck, and i hope to see more! they're really good!

Understandably so. I don't think many people know who Alex Katz is compared to Warhol, but it's more of a Katz style.

Thanks lots. I have more paintings up at my deviantART account.

wow. that's really good. i like "colored", "blue" and the sunset pictures. they're really good. you have an eye for photographs. i know that takes something. i kinda do some photography on the side. Those are seriously neat.

thanks for the art! Soo pretty!

I'm a painter too, and you know what this reminds me of? Vector art. I think it's pretty interesting, and the style is unique. I agree with the blond hair comments and about the lips, but I think you captured Frank well. Oh, and I agree about the Xs over the eyes! : ]

Vector art actually inspired me to go in this direction, but I've since discovered that it's the style of Alex Katz. I'm not so sure about the Xs, being as the original photo doesn't have it, but I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

Thanks =)

I think the hair is actually the right color. It's representational, not photorealism, and the colors you chose work as a whole.

The only thing I would say is that his jaw is too round and distorts the face and the nose is too long at the tip. There's no question who it is or what he's doing.

Hmm... Reminds me of the cell shading technique used in A Scanner Darkly (or the game XIII for the psx or Wind Waker for gamecube). It's very good, but the make-up is a little weird to me. All of the other colors seem to be soft and dull, which causes the make-up to stand out. I also agree with everyone else about lightening the hair (or darkening, anything to add more contrast between the hair and skin), and the jaw line is too thick.

Other than those minor details, that is an amaaaaaazing piece of art. :) Your teacher is gonna love it. Do you go to art school? Or are you taking an art class in high school?

I really like it. The style is great, I love the strands of hair falling over his face for some reason... The strong colours...
I agree with some of the other comments about his jaw, and I think for the lips, perhaps the top lip could be made a shade darker. I don't know how it looks in the reference picture, but usually the top lip looks darker because it's in shadow. Also, like you have the bright highlights around the eye, perhaps you could add some more highlights to his cheeks and nose?
I think it will turn out wonderfully, though :)

Thanks.

I think I've fixed the jawline by moving the hard line above the first strip of blue-gray (upon further investigation of the original photo, it's supposed to be part of the throat/skin under the jaw). I wasn't sure whether to add more highlights or not, because it has more in the original, but I'm not sure if adding more white would take away from the rest of the piece.

Thanks for the crit. Must appreciated.

I love your style, it's very graphic, clean and neat.
As for the jaw, I'll have to agree with the others, it makes the perspective on his face seem a little awkward. Just soften that up and it'll be great!
There were only two other things that really stuck out for me. One was the shadow on his upper lip, although I'm assuming that's it's only looking odd because of the lighting when you took it.
The other thing was the ear. I don't think you need to do much more to it, but the top curve is looking a little flat, you know what I mean?

Other than those minor things, it's very strong. Do you have any other work online? I just adore this style!

THIS is a more accurate photo that has to do with the color (and from there you can get to the rest of my work that's online). I have (since the original post of last night and after the second photo was taken) taken out the line of his jaw and moved it up on top of that first blueish-gray line on his face; it's supposed to be part of his neck and I didn't realize it until finally taking a closer look at the original photo.

I've also looked at that top part as a problem area...maybe have it darker near the bottom of that particular curve?

The style is very similar to that of Alex Katz. You should totally check him out if you like this kind of stuff. Thanks very much for your observations. =)

I also really like the style! But the proportion of the jaw is off a bit. Is the grey on his jaw stubble? If it is then I think the shadow of stubble on his upper lip would blend a lot better if the color matched the other facial hair. I love the shine on his eye make up a lot, and I think his lips would look great with that same sort of attention. (I feel like a tool cause I'm sound just like my freaking art teacher. XD I'm sorry)

I'm a painter too, I'm glad to see another one thats an mcr fan. :D

Yeah, that's stubble. The color above his lip was originally very similar to the color near the jaw, but like I said, I've been working on this for three months so far and a lot has changed and a lot hasn't been able to be changed yet. I was going to make it a bit closer to color, but have yet to get around to it.

I never considered giving his lips a lot of attention, but I will totally keep that in mind. Thanks lots.

You should post your work if you ever paint some fan/pop art. I'd love to see it. =)
