A repost, for the sake of keeping things alive. [06 Oct 2008|04:02pm]

This post originally appeared on my blog.

This couscous pilaf recipe, though doctored and switched up quite a bit by me, comes chiefly from Still Eatin' It by Dana Crumb. The former Mrs. Robert Crumb has written two of the most amazing, most hilarious, most inspirational and indispensible cookbooks I've ever come across. She understands, and communicates, a genuine love for food as it exists. She must've been a big woman if Crumb was in love with her, but the way she cooks, she was still doing all right.

Couscous Pilaf a là Dana & Dot

Ingredients:
- 2 cups chicken broth (or vegetable, if you prefer)
- 1 cup uncooked couscous
- About 2 tbsp. butter
- 1/2 small onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves (or more, or less, whatev), minced
- 1/2 cup pine nuts
- 1/4 cup red flame raisins
- 1 tsp lemon or orange zest
- salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste

Steps to deliciousness:

1. Start the broth boiling in a saucepan.
2. In a pan with a tight-fitting lid, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the onion and garlic in it.
3. After the pan contents get fragrant, toss in the couscous, citrus zest and raisins, and season to taste -- careful with the nutmeg! Stir frequently.
4. When the broth is bubbly and hot, turn the heat down to very low on the pan, dump the hot broth into the pan, stir briskly, and put the lid on it. This allows the couscous to soak up the broth and flavors. Fluff it every few minutes with a fork.
5. Serve topped with pine nuts. *

*Tip: I like to toss the pine nuts in just a little bit of light olive oil, spread them on a piece of foil and pop them in the toaster oven for maybe a minute.

Tasty, light, is great alone or as a side dish to, say, chicken tikka masala or some other Eastern chicken dish. The recipe is very flex -- you can use less broth or more couscous if you prefer it drier, or vice versa if you prefer wetter. You can have it saltier, less salty, with meat, without, with raisins, without. Add vegetables if you like. Maybe try the three Cs for something more ethnic (curry, cumin, and cardamom).

Yum!

God bless the internet, where you can meet ALL kinds of people. Apparently, because I believe, as pointed out previously, that the term "fundie" is extremely negative, I am now officially a fundamentalist (I think my gay and bi friends can attest that I am not), a dumbass, and I deserve to be physically beaten.

Wow. The people you meet on this thing.

I suppose in a way it's good to know there are people out there who believe I should be physically harmed for my beliefs, forewarned is forearmed.

Troll Ticket [06 Oct 2008|04:02pm]

As the Dow dips below the 10,000 mark for the first time in four years, and plunges the global market into free-fall along with it, John McCain has decided to "turn the page" on the economy--apparently a dead issue for him now that he has rushed in and rescued all of us from Wall Street o.0--and decided to get on with the matter at hand: slinging as much mud as he can towards his political opponent in what promises to be an unprecedented attack on both the policies and the person of Barack Obama.

Whether what either he or Sarah Palin says about Obama is the truth or not.

Now, you'd think that there'd be nothing to worry about, considering how many of these lies have been publicly debunked and supposedly chalked up to the unrelenting mendacity of a desperate and defeated man. But you know, there's a reason why people, in this day and age, still cling to the strategy of launching a negative campaign, even when it is so distasteful and uncomfortable to so many of us.

That reason is that it works. A lot more than we'd like it to.

No matter what the trolls say.

RE Spore... [06 Oct 2008|01:39pm]

justplainbryan
I was making my way towards the center of the galaxy, when I encountered an incredibly aggressive species that made minced meat out of my combined allied fleet. Later intelligence suggests that this alien race, the Grox, has an empire surrounding the galactic core, and that this empire has between 600 and 1,000 systems under its control. What's more, they have recently begun extremely violent attacks against my most distant colonies, claiming the lives of millions.

But my intelligence has also discovered a weakness. A well guarded secret, but made quite apparent when attempts to abduct a Grox citizen were met withe unexpected results.

It will take a while, and it will cost alot of money and ships, but it must be done. I'm declaring Jihad against the Grox. I will sterilize all the worlds they inhabit, one by one. It will take a very long time, but it must be done for the good of the galaxy.

Another, perhaps better idea:

Does anyone have Quark 5 and possibly Quark 6, and can convert a file back to Quark 4?

Thank you!

Quark 6 to InDesign converter? [06 Oct 2008|11:52am]

Does anyone here have a plugin that will convert Quark 6 files to InDesign?

I actually don't know what version of Quark the file was created in, but InDesign CS2 and CS3 both won't open it, which tells me it's later than version 4.

I'd be grateful if I could send you the file to convert, or you could send me the plugin.

Thanks, LJ friends!

I had such an awesome hike on Saturday, I just had to share about it. The map is only approximate, though. The trip between B and D was actually on trails through the Wissahickon Park that don't show up on Google Maps.

Old Cures [06 Oct 2008|11:24am]

ARRACH WILD & STINKING

It smels like old rotten Fish, or somthing worse. I commend it for an Universal Medicine for the Womb, and such a Medicine as will easily, safly, and speedily cure any Diseas therof, as the fits of the Mother, Dislocation or falling out therof; it cools the Womb being over-heated. (And let me tel you this, and I wil tel you but the truth, Heat of the womb is one of the greatest causes of hard labor in Childbirth) It makes barren women fruitful, it clenseth the Womb if it be foul and strengthens it exceedingly; it provokes the Terms if they be stopped, and stops them if they flow immoderately. You can desire no good to your Womb, but this Herb will effect it; therfore if you love Children, if you love Health, if you love Ease, keep a Syrup alwaies by you made of the juyce of this Herb and Sugar (or Honey if it be to clens the Womb) and let such as be rich keep it for their poor neighbors, and bestow it as freely as I bestow my studies upon them, or els let them look to answer it another day when the Lord shall come to make inquisition for Bloud.

New Fanfic One-shot [06 Oct 2008|10:14am]

dark_age_pearl
Title: Autumn Affair
Author: (me) Pearl of the Dark Age
Rating: PG-13-ish (I put M to cover my ass in FF.N, because I was originally going to write a huge steamy sex scene that I ended up omitting.)
Warnings: Uh, yaoi? No sex scene, sorry. I might add it in later and put it in y!Gallery, though.

Summary: A warshipping one-shot inspired by the season autumn. Enjoy!

~~~
It's my intention to start up writing on my fanfics again. While I'm working on Q, I'll be posting one-shots to get back into the game!
Happy Birhday to my wife! [06 Oct 2008|09:36am]
justplainbryan
Today is the birthday of the most special person in my life. She's made me a better man, and she has always been there for me, for better and worse. She is a wonderful wife, a great mother to our child, a true partner in our family endevours, and my best friend.
I love you very much, and I hope you have a very Happy Birthday!
