| I can't brain today, I have the dumb: "No-Carb" Meals |
[Jun. 16th, 2008|07:57 pm] |
Somebody help me figure out what to have for dinner tonight! I've been dumpstering tonnnnnns of bread and bagels lately, and I'm finally (After the "omg holy delicious bagels all the time" feeling wore off) getting the over-carbed, bloated, kinda icky stomach feeling.
Please suggest for me your cheapest "non-carb" meals: Things without straight up flour, bread, etc. for a base, no spaghetti, even rice. And I really don't want a plain salad. Bah.
I don't know if this is even possible; I may just be being difficult, and totally uninspired. But if your favorite cheapy vegany dish is something along these lines, let me know! I've got a few hours until the market closes and I have no idea what I want for dinner.
Edit: I made a beet, carrot, onion, spinach and rice (read: leftovers) soup by, uh, throwing a bunch of shit in vegetable stock and cooking it for a few hours, then I made delicious coleslaw with too much vinegar, just the way I enjoy it (and pumpkin chocolate cookies for my antsy roommates!)
thank you for all your creativity! |

Two quick questions...
I'm new to veganism (I've been a vegetarian for a few years, but a few months ago I made the jump to vegan). Anyways, lately I've been really tired, and I'm not sure why. I've just been exhausted. I eat a lot of protein (soy milk, nuts, lentils, beans, even clif bars on occassion), but I still can't seem to shake this exhaustion. I take a multivitamin everyday, so I don't know what the problem is. Can anyone suggest anything that would boost my energy?
And..I want to make lentil "burgers", can they be frozen and then reheated later? |

In your experience, where is the cheapest place to buy nuts? Preferably cashews or brazil nuts, the less salty the better.
Thanks! |

Last question for the day I promise,
Whats the difference between tempeh and TVP? |

Another question, I've been craving bbq sauce but I can't think of anything good to put it on.
I'm not big on tofu, but still willing to try more of it, just haven't had much success. I have made my own seitan twice, once boiling, once baking but it tasted like rubbery overcooked chicken. I haven't tried tvp, is it much different?
What can I slather with this bbq sauce on the baroque? |

i recently noticed that it's relatively cheap at my local grocery store... $1.79 for an 8oz package and was wondering what is your favorite way to cook it? i cooked it today by just frying it with garlic and putting a little soy sauce on it and it was really good! any other ideas? |

| Getting enough protein? |
[Jun. 2nd, 2008|10:26 am] |
Hi there, I'm wondering if people could give me an idea of how they ensure enough protein at each meal? My iron is a bit low and i'm interested in hearing people's typical day's eating. thanks :) |

| Cheap, vegan...and trying to build muscle, UGH |
[May. 25th, 2008|09:19 pm] |
So I've been in a slightly heavy duty weight training regimen for the last four months, on a three week break right now after which it will start up again for another two months. In the meantime I'd like to fine tune my diet because I'm pretty sure I have NOT been getting the calories and protein that I need to get the most out of the program.
Does anyone else here do weight training and can give some suggestions for sneaking in the protein/slightly denser calories? I normally eat brown rice with black beans/veggies for lunch and flax fortified pasta w/ vegan meatballs for dinner. I'm out of luck for home-made protein smoothies and the like 'cause I don't have a blender and I already go through a jar of peanut butter in about two weeks on my own.
Sorry to make one of those "point out the obvious to me" requests but hopefully someone will think of something I've overlooked.
Thanks! |

| I need some inspiration |
[May. 2nd, 2008|08:07 pm] |
OK, so I am technically not a vegan, but I've decided I would really like to find some sort of breakfast alternative that I'll actually eat which doesn't involve eggs.
This is more challenging than one might think.
My vegan hubbie makes smoothies in the mornings all the time, but they just never sound appealing to me. I'm also not really a fan of cereals or oatmeals. I tend to like hot, hearty, high protein meals for breakfast (thus the eggs). I know tofu is often substituted, but to be perfectly honest I'm a little burned out on tofu.
Do you guys have any brilliant suggestions here? It's mostly just a "craving" thing -- what would be a good sub? Any good recipes?
I really appreciate your help. |

| breakfast help! |
[Mar. 27th, 2008|10:39 am] |
My girlfriend and I have been trying to figure out how to eat substantial breakfasts before work. We normally eat around 9 and she can't take a lunch break until like 4 or 4:30, so breakfast needs to last. We want to make breakfast substantial enough so that late lunch is more like a snack to make sure we won't be super hungry when we get home around 7, because when that happens we just want to go out or eat everything in our house instead of taking the time to make something. We've tried pancakes with soysage but that doesn't hold over. Can't do oatmeal or granola because you get too full too fast and then hungry by 1 at least. We make tofu scram a lot but that gets old and it's a lot of soy. There's this recipe in La Dolce Vegan for quinoa breakfast cereal and it has been pretty great but it's not entirely tasty. Does anyone have ideas for how you might make quinoa pancakes or something? Is anyone else in this situation? What do you eat for breakfast to keep you going for the majority of the day?
Thanks for the help! |
