Sorry if this grosses any squeamish people out, but is it vegan to eat your baby's placenta? This has been brought up a few times on another board I frequent.

I didnt eat my last baby's placenta but suffered a great deal of postpartum depression so next time I have a baby I would like to freeze some. Are you being serious about mailing you some?

Eating the placenta has helped a great deal of women with postpartum depression and helps stop postpartum bleeding and has many other benefits. For more info on eating the placenta click here:

Yes because my fingernails belong to me..but the placenta belongs to my baby.

but your body made your fingernails, and your body (along with his daddy's) made your baby. Well, not that you should eat your baby...heh Really, though, I don't understand how the placenta belongs to your baby. It's you sharing something of yours WITH your baby. Once he's born he doesn't need it anymore. That's what mammaries are for!

I actually was originally going to comment something along the lines of, "What a dumb question!" which probably would be considered rude, but I decided to take it in context as just a general philosophical semantic pursuit. It really depends on how you mean the question. If it's "Do I have an ehtical obligation to refrain from eating my baby's placenta based on whether or not it fits the textbook definition of 'vegan'?" then yes, it's a dumb question--who cares what the label is? If, however, it's just musing about the technical definition of veganism itself in gray areas, sure, why not?

I was cooking dinner one day and cut my finger on the knife I was using for onions. If I had bled a little in the casserole, would it have been vegan? I asked my housemate; she said: "I don't care, that's gross, I'm not eating it." That's my opinion on the whole placenta thing.

That is absolutely disgusting. As if eat your own flesh... Ew, I couldn't even stand the thought. It's like eating your own poo. And that thing about helping depression, what a load of sh**. It's all psychological. Pfff.

Actually it has been medically and scientifically proved as fact that it helps cure postpartum depression. And I take it that you're not a mother to think that kind of depression is psychological.

i know dogs do it, so I think it wouldnt be exactly unnatural - tho I would wonder if any benefits derived from it might not be of the placebo sort. Hm. placebo, placenta do they share a common root? *gets out the dictionary*

oh yes and by they i meant people, not dogs

Dogs go around and reproduce with everyone, do humans do that? No, because we have morals and values, and are futher developed than those primitive animals.

Ummmm...I think dogs do it rather to clean off their puppies, not to prevent postpartum depression ;)

And humans eating it seems like a placebo, which means it's effects are psychological - I could be wrong, though since I haven't researched it ;)

Actually, it *is* natural and normal for all mammals to eat their placenta, it is *not* natural that humans waste it.

Well, first off, somebody who could actually lick her own vulva would be very well off, financially and psychologically:

I mean, lordy, she'd be able to make a killing as a contortionist and, furthermore, she'd be able to get cunnilincgus any time she wants! That's like God granting her the ability to have an orgasm without the aide of expensive toys or getting that girl-juice smell trapped under her fingernails (a plight I know *way* too much about).

She'd be ultimate!

Obviously, you're harbouring resentment due to your lacking the physical pecularities to bend and twist your body in such a way that you can give yourself an orgasm any time you like.

It's OK. There are people willing to be your friend as soon as you put out the fuse on your cancerously-bleached tampon.

im cracking up :)

to reply to the original post tho, between giggles at that post.
honestly, im not sure if its vegan--the def. is any animal or anything that comes from an animal. and, well, a placenta *comes* from an animal (the humyn mother). however, my personal reason for veganism is that the animal cant give me permission to drink its milk or eat it's honey, so i dont. however, the placenta belongs to the mother, and if she consents to eat it... i dunno, i guess its a grey area when it comes to 'what is vegan'
but if the question is should a vegan eat it? i would say, absolutely, everybody should and besides its not hurting anyone or anything. :)

It made me literally gag when I read this, hahahahahahha...I'm assuming you're vegan since you're posting in this community, but just as a weird/amusing question. Would you consider eating your own period the same as eating eggs? Since eggs are a chicken's period...

I'm veg because I don't like doing things to other living beings without their consent, like killing/exploiting and eating them (i think this is a very common reason). Your child can't eat your/his plancenta, and you consent to eating it.... why not?

Human by-products are generally considered to be vegan, most vegans strongly advocate breastfeeding (for example), and there's even a very cute article about sexual fluids as a source of B12.
To eat your own placenta would be perfectly vegan, it's yours to eat the same as your milk is for your baby and a cow's milk is for her baby. To use your own breastmilk in cooking if you produce a significant excess (which some women do) would be vegan. Strictly speaking it would be vegan to eat a miscarried fetus or stillborn baby (watch everyone freak out now....) which is what most other mammals do and humans did until *very* recent history, as the energy and nutritional expenditure involved in growing a baby is too important to waste, though it should not be considered neccessary in modern industrial countries as our diets are very rich.

I've heard it's really healthy for you to eat, personally it kind of grosses me out.
But it's suposed to be eaten by the mother, alot of other animals eat there own, since the mother is weak after birth, all the good things in it help her get her energy and everything back up and going

vegan to you is what you decide. (but, if you eat ribeyes for breakfast and say you're vegan, you'll likely have a journal full of vegan-trolls).

My definition of vegan is not eating an animal product that was given unwillingly, or without concent. Cows don't concent to be eaten or milked, but humans can usually give a yay/nay when their body is involved.

If you don't concent to someone (namely, you) taking your placenta and eating it, then it's not vegan. If you do concent, it is. But that's my opinion... and not necessarily your definition of vegan.

well, I've tried my own breastmilk, and I thought that was quite vegan. As for my placentas, well, I donated them and the cord blood cells to science.
