What can I do for Thanksgiving? I only have tofu, veggies, basic stuff. I didn't go shopping because I'm not really a foodie and Thanksgiving means nothing to me but I feel badly about my mother not having anything so I need some recipes. Does tofu go well with cranberry sauce? |

| Apples Galore! |
[Nov. 25th, 2009|12:56 pm] |
|
So, my roommate went home for Thanksgiving and left me with all her produce (not that I'm complaining!) including 1/5 lb of apples. I already have 2 lb of apples, but before this turns into a math equation, any idea what I can do with them? I doubt it's enough to do anything totally crazy (like make jelly) but.... I'm at a loss. Help? |

I'm sure this is the burning question of everybody's mind: where can I get some?
I saw it on Conan last night and now I have to get it! I live near Chicago, so if any locals from this community know who stocks it, please share the information.
Thanks! |

| Easy Nut Roast? |
[Nov. 25th, 2009|08:31 am] |
| [ | feeling: |
| | thankful | ] | As usual the whole family is going to my Nana's house on christmas day. This is the first time I'll be there since swearing off the animals and my nana, bless her, wants to make me a nut roast.
I feel guilty making her go to extra effort, so I'd like a really simple recipe that's not too expensive. The simpler and cheaper the better.

| Deep Fried Mars bars |
[Nov. 25th, 2009|08:11 am] |
I think the post was deleted where we were discussing deep fried Mars bars, so I'll post in reply to the person who was asking here if that's ok. It's do-able with any vegan chocolate bar but these
http://www.veganstore.co.uk/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=719&Category_Code=002
seem those closest, for an authentic, delicious and truly artery clogging experience. A lot of Scottish chip shops will do whatever you take in , so using your fave vegan chocolate bar instead would still be authentic.
For batter 1 cup plain flour 1/2 cup cornflour 1 pinch baking soda soya milk or beer oil (for deep frying) Chill the chocolate bar by keeping it in the fridge, but don't freeze it. Mix the flours and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) together. Add soya milk (traditional) or beer (which gives a lighter result) until you get a batter with the consistency of thin cream. Heat the oil until a small piece of bread will brown in a few seconds, but don't allow to smoke. Coat in batter and deep fry until golden brown. |

| Deodorant |
[Nov. 19th, 2009|11:31 am] |
I know this isn't exactly about being vegan, so mods feel free to delete if this is inappropriate, sorry.
I'm getting a little desperate here. I'm almost out of deodorant, and it seems they have discontinued the brand I use. I'm looking for an aluminum free, cotton fiber deodorant. I used to use Adidas, but it's going for about $20 a stick (!!!!!) on amazon because it was discontinued. It seems Trader Joe's used to have a cotton deodorant, but it has also been discontinued.
I like the cotton because it still absorbs some moisture without using unnatural chemicals or clogging pores. I've tried crystal deodorants and they do not work for me at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

| Sauce, please! |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|05:22 pm] |
I'm making some whole wheat pumpkin ravioli soon but am clueless about what sauce should accompany it. I'd like to make it myself but am open to suggestions for store-bought sauces that are available in the Chicago area.
It doesn't need to be super cheap, just not crazy expensive. I saw a pasta sauce recipe that called for black truffle oil, for example, and another that called for saffron. If a single ingredient costs more than $10, the recipe is not for me! I'm not picky and enjoy thick or thin, chunky or creamy, sweet or savory. I just really have no idea what to serve this pasta with since I have seen it mostly with mascarpone sauces.
Thanks in advance to anybody with a good idea. : ) |

| A hill of beans |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|02:21 pm] |
Literally!
Last night, I set out some beans to soak for a chili recipe I wanted to make today. Somehow, I managed to soak about four times the amount I needed. (yesterday was a..trying day, lol) Now, I've got a huge 1-gallon bag filled most of the way with a mixture of navy beans, black-eyed peas, and pink beans.
Can I just stick them in the fridge for awhile until I figure out what in the hell I'm going to make with them? I've already got a bunch of meals planned out and a fridge packed full of food, so it's going to be awhile before I can use them to make any more food, lol.
Maybe the freezer?
Please halp, fellow cooks! |

So, i'm having a problem. I"m quite frequently stuck in my office for long long LONG periods of time and I often don't bring enough food. Does anyone have suggestions for things that can be kept in a desk/fridge for a decent period of time as backup food? conditons: I do NOT deal well with sugar, so things like granola or granola bars are out. Also, gluten free is preferable, as is whole foods type stuff. If it has more than 7 ingredients or so, I won't eat it. That being said, suggestions?
*EDIT* I should probably have said this more clearly, i'm looking for things that can be stored for a moderate amount of time that can make a meal. Snacks do not suffice when i'm stuck here for 12 hrs. |

| Vegan or Not? Prius and Insight |

Does anyone know if the new Toyota Prius or Honda Insight is vegan?
My car broke and I need a new one (hoping to lease to avoid a maintenance trap). Apologies that this isn't exactly a cheapvegan question, but this seemed like my best vegan resource. =) |

| Gardein on sale at Publix |
[Nov. 1st, 2009|06:39 pm] |
My local Publix has the Gardein frozen products on sale for $3.50 (or, you know, 2 for $7). It's only a $.50 savings per package, but it's still better than paying full price!
So, if anyone is interested, check your local Publix! |

| Attn Europeans: Delicious vegan products at LIDL |
[Oct. 29th, 2009|05:12 am] |
I freaking love LIDL. They have the BEST soy yogurt (Soywell) I have ever eaten and their Hazelnut and Almond granola bars (Linessa) are DELICIOUS! The soy yogurt is 99 cents for a 4-pack and I think 1,18 for a box of 8 granola bars. It's really hard to find vegan foods where I live in Spain, so LIDL is like a godsend. Thank you, Germany!

| [ | sound: |
| | Nine Inch Nails - Terrible Lie | ] | Hey all - I'm looking for some cheap, relatively quick & easy recipes to take to school with me tomorrow. My Spanish 101 class is having a Dias de los Muertos celebration, and I want to be able to actually eat something during the party, hah.
My instructor is from Cuernavaca, so if anyone has any authentic Mexican recipes I could pull off, that'd be awesome. :)
Thanks!

| “Messy Burgers” |
[Oct. 23rd, 2009|09:10 am] |
My grandmother makes a super vegan version of the sloppy Joe.
You sauté an onion in a little oil, then add vegan crumbles or other ground beef substitute. Then squirt mustard, ketchup, and BBQ sauce (optional) in the mixture to taste. About 2 parts ketchup and 1 part mustard, and just do your thing with the BBQ sauce.
It sounds kind of weird, but it's really tasty, easy, and cheap!
Left-overs are also amazing on spinach pasta with a little tomato sauce. |

I am moving into a new condo and want to keep it as fresh as possible. Are there any brands of rugs that do not us formaldehyde or crazy chemicals like that?? Also, I am having a hard time deciding if I want my couches chemically treated for stain resistance or not. Looking into low VOC paints but haven't had much time or luck with it at the moment.
Also, I can only find the lemon method wood floor cleaner in packs f six. I just want one!! This seems ok as well: http://www.vitacost.com/Seaside-Naturals-Simple-Pure-Clean-trade-Hardwood-Floor-Cleaner-24-5-fl-oz
Whats a good solution for scrubbing a tub?? I don't want to use bleach.. I would like to try a pre-made one before I make anything of my own. |

| New to being Vegan and looking for advice! |
[Oct. 19th, 2009|05:10 pm] |
Hello out there! My friend has been vegan for little more than over a year and I became interested in trying it out because it sounds healthy. I'm asking for some advice since I'm just starting out.
The biggest issue I'm having right now is that I'm finding it hard to eat enough. :( I don't have very much money so when I shop I'm only able to spend $20 worth on foods (I usually buy from whole foods), and it's definitely not enough to sustain me for even a week. My Dad normally does the shopping and I'm not around when he does it (because I'm usually at work and he's always gone on the weekends and does the shopping on the way home). So the past 2 weeks I bought things with my own money but I don't have much so I can't get much. I'm trying to see if maybe he'll just give me money for food and I can just buy what I want. Anyway, I usually end up having to eat things that I want to stop eating (meats/dairy products) just to help fill myself up. One of my friends suggested eating Chia seeds because a few people we know take them and they say it gives them more energy and they don't have to eat as much. I'm also worried that I might not be getting enough protein or other needed nutrients and that I might have to take supplements to help, at least till I can figure out what I should eat. Also, I exercise a lot these days and I want to make sure I'm taking in enough nutrients for my muscles.
So my questions are...
1) What staple foods do you guys buy? Lately all I've been eating are fruits (mostly strawberries and bananas but i mix things up every once in a while), veggies (frozen stir fry mixes or I buy fresh veggies), wheats (oatmeal, cereal, or brown rice, whole wheat bread), and hummus. I've been drinking mostly water and soy milk.
2) What do you buy that will fill you up when you're not at home? 2 days out of the week I'm at school for like...13-15 hours and they don't have too many items on the menus there that are vegan-friendly (and I don't want to have to buy food at school if I can help because it's expensive....) Also, 3 of those week days I'm at work for long hours.
3) What cheap things can I buy that are vegan? Like from Safeway? I'm trying to avoid eating anything with high fructose corn syrup, I'm avoiding refined sugars, and I'm trying to not have too many sweets.
Any other advice or info you have would be much appreciated. Thanks! :) |

My boyfriend has a gluten allergy. I've never really known anyone that had this problem before. All we mainly eat are salads, rice, beans and corn-everything. Corn crust pizza (YUM!), corn bread, corn chips, etc. Anyone have this allergy that could let me know of some delish and/or creative ideas to make? Thanks
*edit* I know how to use Google, I can find links and such on my own (thank you very much though!). I was mainly just wondering if other non-gluten people in this community could let me know what their fav dishes are to eat. xo |

| Magic Shell! |
[Oct. 16th, 2009|11:59 am] |
I was just responding to the recent post about thai coconut soup and the coconut cream being all congealed at the top of the can, and I came across this recipe which uses coconut oil (which is solid at relatively high temperatures):
Make your own Vegan Magic Shell Icecream topping http://www.browniepointsblog.com/2008/03/28/make-your-own-junk-food-homemade-magic-shell/
How cool! I knew the 'magic' ingredient was coconut oil in Magic Shell, but I didn't realize it was that easy to make - all you need is chocolate, coconut oil and a microwave! (You can of course use your stove but I am actually all for microwaves for making candy - so much easier!)
The ideas for variations are pretty gourmet too (Lime Me Up: drops of lime oil in white chocolate, and a sprinkle of salt on the shell as it hardens) - Cool ideas! |

Has anyone experienced how unappetizing the Amy's Thai Coconut Soup looks?? I am vegan, but I really am NOT a picky eater, but when I opened the can and tried to pour out the contents.. I really wanted to throw up.. there was a layer of congealed orange stuff and when you break through that.. its all gray!! Gross.. I could not eat it.. I had to throw it away..is this normal for this soup?? |

| Tomatoes! |
[Oct. 13th, 2009|03:25 pm] |
The other night I made stuffed tomatoes, and, not wanting to waste anything, kept the goopy insides. So now I've got a bowl full of the insides of 5 medium tomatoes... I figure I can make some sauce or soup out of this, but I'm not entirely certain how to go about it and don't want a kitchen disaster. Suggestions? Recipes? |

so, I just saw an a recipe for vegan soy sauce...erm...soy sauce is not vegan? what? does anyone know why?
edit/update: I follow a vegan recipes thing on twitter that has been doing lots of rather good looking sauces lately (e.g. carrot and tarragon sauce, vegan "cheese" sauce, etc) but they just posted a "vegan soy sauce" recipe that confused me. I googled and found no clear indication soy sauce was ever un-vegan to begin with, but did see some brief mentioning of Kikoman brand being vegan in their processing...so I wonder if the issue was potential non-vegan processing of the otherwise vegan ingredients? I don't know. evidently they were confused. |
