OH $HIT
This is straight from Hero Game's website...that bad feeling I just had? Just got worse

The basics of the deal are this. Cryptic has bought the Champions and Dark Champions intellectual property from us — the characters, places, events, and so on — and licensed back to us the right to produce Champions RPG books.

wait...so Hero sold the rights to the Championsverse to Cryptic and are leasing it back. So they're now paying to be able to use the stuff the were using for free? Am I crit-failing my Int roll or what?

DOJ sold the rights but in the sales contract
DOJ has the right to use the Champions IP for free, forever
Cryptic can but out the this right but it will cost them a whole lotta money

I was concerned at first, but someone explained it me like this: there's a greater threat of Hero Games going out of business before Cryptic. Additionally, Hero Games doesn't have the staff to stay timely in approving whatever Cryptic may want to do.

In buying the IP, Cryptic can do what it needs to do without waiting for approval, or risking Hero Games going out of business. In return, Hero Games licenses Champions and Dark Champions back, for free and in perpetuity. And supposedly there's a reversion mechanism in the deal, so Hero Games gets the IP back when Champions Online ends or whatever.

After looking at the redesigns up on champion's online, I'd have to say blah.

I am similarly underwhelmed, but it's early days. They may change their minds completely. And at the very least, this news plus the announcement of 6E has done more to raise discussion of HERO than anything else of late.
