    Hero Designer
For those of you who don't know Herodesigner.com has been folded into Hero's website. Log-in using your name/password and then click the hero designer menu item. Word of warning though, the "notify me of updates" function is broken so you won't get e-mails about when the program is updated. Last update was the 4th of this month.

And if you haven't done it pick up Stronghold. It's a good read.

    OH $HIT
This is straight from Hero Game's website...that bad feeling I just had? Just got worse

The basics of the deal are this. Cryptic has bought the Champions and Dark Champions intellectual property from us — the characters, places, events, and so on — and licensed back to us the right to produce Champions RPG books.

    THE 2008 RELEASE SCHEDULE

These blurbs cover only books not already in the printing process (so Stronghold and The PS238 Roleplaying Game aren’t listed here, since one’s already out and one’s about to go to the printer).

The Atlantean Age: It is the time of the Dominion of Atlantis, an island whose people dominate the world and perhaps challenge even the gods themselves for power. Using the wondrous mineral orichalcum found only on their island, the Atlanteans have created a techno-magic that has made their sorcerers and wizards the mightiest in the world, equipped their armies with flying ships and enchanted crossbows, and in some cases transformed the world itself with magic. But their enemies, possessed of a foul, dark sorcery, are just as powerful, and without bold heroes to protect it Atlantis itself may fall. The Atlantean Age details this wondrous High Fantasy setting for your Fantasy Hero games!

The meat of the announcement is that Cryptic is indeed going to be coming out with a Champions MMORPG called Champions Online, probably due out in 2009, though that is a WAG on my part. In an interesting twist, rather than Cryptic licensing the Champions Universe from DoJ, they are buying the Champions and Dark Champions IP (except Harbinger of Justice ), and as part of the deal are licensing the rights to print RPG books for those IP back to DoJ in perpetuity (and DoJ doesn't have to pay for it).

DoJ and Cryptic will be working closely together to help insure that any changes to the CU for Champions Online get reflected in the CU books that DoJ will be publishing. Both content-wise and appearance-wise.
Important Note: Cryptic is NOT buying the Hero System IP, just the Champions and Dark Champions IP.

Another Important Note: Champions Online will not be a Hero System MMORPG. My understanding is that Hero is planning on releasing a guide to allow players of Champions Online to recreate their characters in the Hero System at some point after CO comes out, but that it will NOT be using the Hero System itself.

Cryptic has also licensed the Hero System from DoJ so that they can use HERO terminology to describe things. Cryptic has also said that their plan is that CO will have an unprecidented level of customizability in character creation. There is the chance that if Cryptic and DoJ agree that the level of customizability is up to the standards of the HERO System the game may also get hung with the title of HERO Online. Though DoJ retains the right to say "no" on that.

One of the design features that Darren mentioned that Cryptic is looking at implementing that would allow you during character creation to create your own nemesis.

There is also every chance that there will be DoJ produced books that have bits and peices that will be useful for the CO players. Behind the scenes type things.

Oh, and Important Thing: DoJ will be getting access to Cryptic Studios art for publishing in their books.

Important Note from Steve: HERO 6th will in no way be "dumbed down" to make it more appealing to MMO players. I'll note he says this as an MMO player himself.

    Hero 6th Edition
So Hero has pretty much announced that Hero System 6th Edition is coming in 2009.

Anyone who has comments, complaints, whatever go ahead and post them here. Positive and negative. All I ask is that you don't bash anyone for their opinion about it. Discuss, yes, bash no.

While I can see a 6th Ed, to me the time is wrong and this is a bad idea. Hero Revised is barely a year old, we have the Character Creation Handbook and the Combat Guide. After this is all done we'll (yes i'm assuming here) get the same hash of books we got before after an edition change. Also there is the issue of 5th Ed books that come out between now and then. While all Hero books (1st on up to now) are built along the same princples and easy to update, it's more money that's being spent for something that's "obsolete" in the next 12-18 months.

And yes I'm aware that eventually we'll have to get another edition of Hero. Sixth was coming some day I know. This just seems too soon to me.

    Cross-overs and Events
Skipping over some of the event books that have been done the past few years, I'm curious what cover-overs and events have you tossed into your personal compains? Or even recoomend people to read. I'm not talking the big ones or very current (Civil War, House of M, Infinite Crisis) or the ones that really never went away (Watchmen, Crisis on Infinte Earths).

Some of the ones I enjoyed are these:
    • Tangent Comics - Same name, different character. I loved these just for the joy of seeing how characters might be changed based on a name. I used to love playing with some of the 4th Ed. Champion's characters and see how I might re-design them based on their name alone (Dr. Destroyer becoming a crazed geneticist, Defender becoming a street hero ala Guardian Angels).
    • Age of Apocalypse - Super-heroes after "the fall of civilization" (or at least the brink). I've taken some of the stuff from New Millennium and taken it over to this idea. Ok, not very original but oh well. And yeah I know it's Fuzion. Why throw away ideas though? Bay City being the last bastion of civilization, tracts of areas where things are ran by "mad max" style super-vilians. And little Genocide controled survival camps where maybe, just maybe, they really are the good guys.
    • Sins of Youth - "Young gets old, old gets young..." Todd Nauck did some famoulous artwork for the series back when DC did 5th Weeks. How would your characters behave if they were suddenly back in their teens.
After flipping around tonight I "remembered" these:
    • Deathmate - Image meets Valiant. Done as prestige one-shots. When Solar and Void meet their universes merge becoming an amalgam of both worlds. This along with Amalgam/DC vs Marvel is great if you want to play with the ideas of crossing GM ran campaigns, and a little more out there (and more work granted) than the normal Earth-1 & Earth-2 style crossovers.
    • DC 1,000,000 - DC's look at the future and probably one of the worst 5th Weeks to come out. Ok, some very good ideas came out it, I honestly wouldn't try doing this one. That's just me.

    Checking Hero...
OK, not really Hero related or maybe it is. I'm just curious about this though after talking to a few people today.

How often do you check Hero's site, and has your viewing habits changed recentely.

For me, I used to go on there and check every day after the new regime took over, now I'll go once or twice a week. Normally I check on Friday or Saturday after they have the news blurb for the week.
