I hope nobody ever needs this information, but just in case....
don't ever end up with a full grown deer in your fenced backyard in the middle of Champaign!
Shocked the heck out of me when we went out to enjoy the lovely evening last night and a 5ft deer comes leaping through the yard. I live near the intersection of Prospect and Kirby, and this is the second one I've seen in the last few years. I was told another one was taken in Scott Park last week.
Poor thing ended up smacking itself against my fence in a panic, knocking itself down. Fortunately, after I ran to the house to make some phone calls, he was able to get up on all fours and wander aimlessly around. I was scared to open the gates hoping he'd find his own way out thinking he'd bound across a busy street and cause a major accident. Fortunately, he didn't appear to be gravely injured or in pain.
My question is....does anybody know what in the world you're supposed to do in this situation? I must have made 10 phone calls from everything from the non-emergency phone number for the police, to wildlife rescue to Vet. Med. and there seems to be no chain of command.
I was offered 3 alternatives by those I spoke with. Pay someone $100 to come out and put it down and haul away the carcass, have the local police shoot it and then find a way to deal with the body myself or just let it wander away on its' own.
Seeing as it was near midnight and traffic had slowed down, I went with the open gate option hoping he'd wander away when he felt strong enough. Evidently he did since there was no sign of him this morning, but it sure seems like the city should have some way to deal with these problems without putting the citizens at risk. Isn't that what we pay some of our tax money for, anyway?
